I have not seen this film since the 1960s! WOW! I used to follow the development of the X-15 like crazy. I built models of everything that flew that was seen in that film. I wish that it had been of better quality but, at least I was able see it again. The X-15 was what made the SR-71 possible. That and so much more.
Glad that you like the X-15, and this movie, but I did have to say that the development and construction of the X-15 had absolutely nothing to do with the SR-71. They were completely separate projects, accomplished by two different companies, and were designed to achieve much different purposes.
@@x15galmichelleevans I will willingly state that I have been corrected and educated. It's been a looooong time since I even thought about the X-15. I don't mind being corrected if I am wrong. Unlike the kids of today. LOL Thank you.
@@steveforbes7718 I've spent 40+ years of my life researching the X-15 program for the book I wrote, and I am very OCD about it. 🙂 You are not the first person to equate the X-15 and the SR-71, so certainly no problem.
I grew up watching the news where they reported on X-15 test results. And, I, too, built my fair share of model airplaned. My dad was a Hun and Thud pilot. I didn't stand a chance.
There were two B-52 motherships used in the X-15 program. Balls 3 is on display at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona, and Balls 8 is at the North Gate at Edwards AFB, California.
I was Security Police in the Air Force, you should have seen them up close, their wings actually sagged 8 feet. To this day I can't stand the smell of jet fuel.
There was a full-scale mockup that was used for scenes with the actors inside the X-15. They didn't want to take any chances about messing up the real aircraft. That mockup had a fascinating history in itself. After the movie, it was on display at the New York Worlds Fair in 1964 and 1965. After that it ended up at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona, where it still resides today. Fun fact about the movie's star, David McLean. He was claustrophobic, so any scenes where he is supposedly flying, if you look closely, the cockpit is not completely shut. Not a good thing to do when flying at hypersonic velocity. 🙂
That is a fair question. I believe that the source material was not available. I think this may have been an old video transfer from film to tape such as VHS or something.
@@steveforbes7718 This film was transferred to RUclips from the only DVD release that the film ever had. Wow. Saw this picture with my parents at the drive-in! I was 6 years old..
As a kid, I assembled scale models of both, a tandem B-52 + X-15 in 1:144 scale, and a 1:72 of the X-15
I also built a lot of those kits. They were far more complicated than the snap together junk that passes for "models" today.
