PA Wintertime EURO NYMPHING

  • A great, cold winter day spent euro nymphing for wild brown trout on a PA limestone creek. The hot flies were a size 16 peacock lite brite perdigon, quilldigon and size 18 france fly. A slow, stealthy approach was the ticket. Don’t be afraid to change tactics while on the stream. Streamers, dry-dropper and nymphing all contributed to the day.
    Hope you enjoy!

    Great day on the water! You had some great pointers/tips interspersed in there! That stream looked like a good one and it is neat that there were bugs coming off!

    Good stuff! You killed it man , real smart fishing on your part !! Changing flies and dropping down on tippet makes a huge difference!! Not easy on cold days but nessessary ! Definitely go small on winter days ! Loved it ! Tight lines !

    Nice, you really had it dialed in!! That’s solid work in those conditions. I do the same thing with the triple surgeons to save time setting up a dropper/point rig.

      Michael, out of respect to the locals, I don’t name streams unless they are well know with numerous press and articles written about them. Hope you understand.

    I just subscribed. Very informative video. Thanks for taking the time to video and edit. If you ever get some time maybe you could create a video showing how you tie up your tippet rig, you could use some line that is easy to see like other knot videos. Thanks again.

    Great Video. Thanks for sharing your observations on the bug activities and your fly adjustments. How do you tell the difference between a wild native trout to a stocked trout.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 года назад +3

      Thanks so much! Wild trout have really clean fins and the tips are typically white. Also, their colors are far more vibrant. Sometimes the colors of stocked trout seem "dull". Wild Brown trout have red/orange in the adipose fin, stocked browns typically don't. Wild rainbows a really silvery with vibrant colors as well. Stock trout tend to be a little "fatter" because they are raised in a hatchery and have a diet consisting of pellets and don't expend a lot of energy, therefore, are a little out of shape (for the lack of a better word). Wilds are lean and fight much harder. Stocked trout fins and tails are rounded or split/jagged from swimming in a hatchery. A huge give away are in juvenile wild trout...they have parr marks (which are faint horizontal or banded lines going down both sides of the body). Hope this helps. Tight lines!

    Great video!!! Great browns in the cold!!! Can you explain your leader set up to the reel n backing?? Struggling to find what I like..

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 года назад +1

      Appreciate it Scott! I use a Cortland euro fly line (.22mm level braid core). My leader is .18mm Pierre-Sempe green mono (approx 12 feet), then 4 feet of 5x Hanak bi-color sighter to a 1mm Cortland tippet ring. I’ve tried them all and this has been my favorite set up. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    Can you use your euro nymphing rod for a dry dropper rig? Also if the water is fast can you use a split shot on your euro nymphing rod?
    Thanks for the videos!

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  2 года назад +1

      Hey Ron. Yes, you can. As a matter of fact, I prefer using my euro rod for dry-dropper. Check out one of my videos where I use dry-dropper ruclips.net/video/karEbQYxJRY/видео.html.
      You certainly can use split shot. I prefer not to, as I use weighted nymphs because of the direct connection. But, in a pinch you can.
      Thanks for watching!

    Really enjoyed this and going to rethink some of the ways I fish in the winter! Excellant advice and photography! I have a question: Between the 15" Brown and the 'Brown Eel' (funny, Ive caught lots of those!lol) were you still going dry/dropper? ..and how short of a dropper (off the dry) will you go in skinny water like that? I really like the way you enjoy catching those fish in a finesseful manner..great video!

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  2 года назад

      Thanks so much, Tony! Ha! those brown eels seem to always get the heart beating fast....
      I wasn't using the dry-dropper then, I had a double nymph rig on. In skinny water sometimes I have had it as short as 6 inches if they are taking emergers just under the surface. That day I think had had it around 16 inches or so (if memory serves me....). I use a dry-dropper a lot in the winter (really all year). It can be really effective to stall out your rig in the slower water/eddies they may be holding in. Also, if you get those winter days when BWOs and midges come out, it can work really well. Hope this helps.
