- Hey y’all! Since my last upload we’ve reached 600 subscribers(thank you!) and since the INSIDE outtakes dropped I wanted to create a video based off of them. I chose The Chicken because I wanted a challenge to test out visual storytelling( and because the song is great) Hope y’all enjoy!
This is the first time I've ever seen fan work really add to Bo's material. This enhances the humour, the pathos... just.... nice job. Really really well done. As far as I'm concerned this is now the music video to this song. Thanks for making it, now I'm gonna share the shit out of it. To both of my friends. And my mum.

Why am I crying over a song about a chicken crossing the road?
Because she crossed the road so she could have a better life, even though she could’ve died in the process, because dying would be a better fate then depriving herself of the chance to truly live🥲

@@iamartoftomorrow he didn't specify that she did cross. He said that we wish to think that she did and that why she did it. But really he is implying that she died but it's too sad to think about that so we might as well believe thzt she did because that's the happy ending. It's pretty sad when you understand the depth of the song 🤧

I METAPHORICALLY CAN ANSWWER "WHY THE CHICKEN CROSSED THE ROAD" BUT THIS, IS MORE OF POETRY NOT PHILOSOPHY
The phrasing of “the road is gigantic, the chicken is little” makes me so upset because it’s just such an innocent way to phrase it. 😢

Only a little bit of feathers were on the road, and before the chicken crossed, she had tail feathers, but after, her tail was bald.

This is exactly what I imagined in my head except when he sings "that's why she did it" the chicken in angel form is looking down on itself in the field because she really did die, but believes it was worth it. Unfortunately I can't animate like this so thank you very much for making this ❤
I truly believe she got to the other side, but if she didn’t, I agree she’d just be happy she tried. That’s all that matters❤️
To be fair, the chicken could pretty easily survive a car passing over it by ducking it's head a bit
@@mielliot13 Chickens are dumb sons'a bitches, this one time when I was visiting an aunt after school (I walk home from school, not crucial to the story but I have to explain that) since she has a small farm there and she lets the chicken and roosters outside to enjoy themselves usually one or two babies wander into their home. The worst part is that since there's a slab with a slope in the middle that you have to walk through or rather walk up to, it's about the size of my foot, sometimes the baby will get stuck up there and, well, the mom doesn't know how to climb up there without a slope. They'd have to set the chicks back down there. In very few cases though, they've hid behind furniture and died of starvation or being stepped on. I swear they're half a centimeter tall, it's like a deer in headlights

I mean the pun intended is that she might have died or made it to the other side, wich is another way to say she died but she could've actually survived, that's the trick

Bro this is under rated af, and its the third result when you look "the chicken bo burnham" which just tells me the song is also horribly under rated

I love this, in my head the "other side" was the afterlife, I definitely think it's meant to both, and left to interpretation, to think that this song was an outtake. Brilliant from Bo yo.

I learned that the chicken crossing the road joke is about suicide; the other side being the afterlife. Watching this with that understanding got me choked up. The lines "... most think she died. But I think we ought to believe that she got to the other side(heaven)..." punched me in the heart! Great vid!

This is a song about a chicken but I see my mom in the place of the chicken. The car resembles the people trying to destroy your hopes and dreams. I honestly cryed while watching this animation even if it's just a song about a chicken that almost dies to most.
My mom just got her real estate license at 55. I showed her this song and she dropped to her knees nearly. Thank you bo Burnham. And thank You, you genius bastard I love you dude. Wonderful animation
On August 9th 2022 my dear friend Lucy finally made it to the other side of the road. No longer in pain, always happy, never forgotten. Your friends and family miss you, may you rest in peace.
I didn't expect this to be this much beautiful. I also love the detail in 2:31 where hers side is grey and the other side is colourful. Great animation!
As a chicken lover, this really moved me.
Also, on a happy note:
There are only a few feathers left on the road, and before she crossed, her tail had feathers. After she crossed, it was bald.

Yup! The chicken was little, and it worked to her advantage. The car passed over her.
Each time I listen to a Burnham's song, I can't stop being amazed by how we all have the same story in mind BUT with different interpretations. We all are agreeing on the fact that, this is a song about following our dreams, no matter how bigger they are and how bigger will be the obstacles road. But, I had only two endings to it: dead in the middle of the road (either we gave up along the way, or we lost everything to an external factor) or saved to the other side (we did it entirely to the end).
But you just gave me one third ending thanks to the last two pictures: the chicken left a few feathers there... but she got away with it, just like someone who probably lost some friends, relatives, anything else only to feel better. Only to achieve their dreams.

Honestly, I kinda wished you played on the double meaning of the last sentence where 'we ought to believe that she got to the OTHER SIDE'. The other side as in - heaven, hell, or whatever lies beyond. But seeing this hopeful message instead is a nice perspective. Great job! Thank you for the animation.
It’s funny you said that because in the original storyboard, the plan was to show the chicken’s ghost on the other side of the road and her lifeless body on the road after being hit, but I wanted to end on a good note😅 Considering how Bo is known for his wordplay, both endings are very probable!
See, I don't like that message. As a woman, a mother, who used to be a wife, I was discouraged to go follow my own dreams and happiness. I think "most think she died " in order to discourage people from following their heart. It's too dangerous! You'll never make it. I like Bo's ending where he tells us that we should focus on her living and sacrificing it all for the green meadows and dreams of being a dentist ❤️
@@lexjude Yes! The message shouldn’t be “don’t take risks because it’s not worth it” it should be “follow your dreams despite the challenges and risks”. I dedicated this video to my mom because she’s sacrificed so much in order to be successful and happy and to give me a good life. She faced challenges and was scarred in the process but made it to the other side❤️

The original joke is that "The other side" is the afterlife, hence it would be the part where "most think she died."
but I like the idea that Bo was saying why don't we actually hope she really did just get to the other side of the road.

This is so beautifully made, I can really feel all the love that went into it! 2:25 is so incredible in every way, it syncs up with the music so perfectly and really deepens the impact of the lyrics. The size of the road in comparison to the chicken and the way it takes up almost the entirety of the screen really hammers home how almost insurmountable crossing that road feels. God, I love it so much!

Saying “all she is” is a mother and wife I think gets to me. There is this lie that women who decide against a career are missing out on life. Is the implication that she believes being dead is even still better than being a mother and wife? This song sounds more like an explanation of a suicide and why she ended her suffering. To have a family and be a mother and still feel emotionally empty would be devastating. Maybe the idea that you can’t feel happiness with all of that, the only answer for the chicken is to get to the “other side”. In this case it’s definitely better to think she’s happier now despite how selfish she was to leave everyone behind, even though we know she probably didn’t find the happiness she wanted so badly for. The more we have the more miserable I feel we are. I empathize with her wanting to leave, it’s just a shame nobody saw the signs of her looking into the distance. We are all just one decision away from ending the things we think make us miserable, we’re just scared of the other side.
She did it so we would one day believe she’s happier now than in this life. She was sick of being sad, I can understand. We all walk up to the edge of the road when it get bad enough. Poor chicken had too much courage.
