I think that line on its own is very funny, and pretty relatable. However, within the context of the song (a drake parody) there's a juxtaposition in wanting to show your partner how much you care about them in celebration of an anniversary, while also demanding they do work for their gift (one they most likely never asked for), and that they do it alone despite having anxiety surrounding technology. It's a bit ironic, that's why it's funny. The whole song is about minor relationship problems, but highlighting details where people can become hypocritical, jaded, or inconsiderate of their partners over time.
This is maybe the best, most honest depiction of beginning long term relationships. All the boundary setting and the slow realization your partner is so incredible, and also so incredibly annoying. Bo has such a talent for capturing the kernel of truth at the center of something and then making you laugh at the absurdity.

Five years is a classic Drake song. Begins with a voicemail just like in Marvin’s room. Xylophone (technically it’s a marimba) as the base instrument like Passionfruit. Sent this to my wife immediately. celebrated 5 years just last month... this was perfect and hilariously fit her really well. the spider thing killed me.
“Still you, still me, still here” is such a wonderful line… borders between a romantic and adversarial tone, and really elegantly encloses the message of the song.
@@Gush27 I think it’s a fair analysis of the line? The song is trying to counter mainstream portrayals of relationships found in popular songs by speaking of small, personal quarrels between the singer and his partner instead of some big sweeping, general statement about how much they love each other and how perfect everything is. I found it cool that the particular line I commented about bordered between the “romantic” or “adversarial” tone because it implies that the disagreements they get in are just as important a part of their romantic relationship, so in that way it “encloses the message of the song.” I’m not a Bo fan at all, as this is the first song I’ve heard by him… I’m sorry to hear there is stigma about Bo fans misinterpreting or over-analyzing his songs, and I am sorry that I am playing into that and contributing to the perceived cringe of the fanbase in your eyes and turning you away from the song. However, Ipersonally think it is a surface level read of the song though, and I struggle to see how to interpret that line otherwise. Hopefully what I have written above clarified what I was trying to say in my original comment (I know my original comment was pretty vague), but if you still think it’s wrong or stupid, I’d love to hear what you think is wrong about it specifically.
It's amazing that bo's expectations are so high, that he wrote this entire song, went through the process of filming the video for it. And determined it not good enough and excluded it. That's dedication dude.
I have been mainlining his and Trixie Mattel's videos so much that I haven't even realised this isn't in the Netflick special... Even though I have recently rewatched it lol
Don’t forget he also fully edited this- lighting effects, color correction, adjusting the focuses, it’s honestly astounding how mature Bo is about his whole process where he can make a finished product but can put it to the side if it doesn’t fit the final image he has
They way his rhymes are so masterful (“wanted dim sum then” with “gotten some when”) then he rhymes “bathroom” with “bathroom” six times at the end. He is so freaking talented but never takes himself too seriously and I love that
He takes himself very seriously. Listen to "All Eyes on Me", notably the part where he's sharing why he stopped doing shows. Then go listen to the Kanye rant video and listen to the second half of the song.
I feel this way about a lot of the outtakes. They're just as funny and well-made but perhaps didn't fit with the rest of the show. For this one I think it's the depiction of physical interaction with another person, which contradicts the theme of isolation and loneliness.
They're amazing but has nothing to do with the Covid situation, so him cutting it is just a great sign of his complete control and awareness of what he's doing.
@@filiporvik2782 yeah, im guessing he thought it came off as if he wasnt completely isolated for covid in one room and had his partner with him, which probably wasn’t the vibe he wanted to go with
My theory on why this was cut: it seems like the narrative he ended up wanting in the end was that he was completely alone during the whole time making this special. I think introducing any other character into it that he's directly interacting with ruins that narrative. Oddly enough, I think even introducing a spider into the equation ruins that narrative in a certain way.
@@isaaclehmann1729 It’s still not direct interaction. There’s FaceTiming with the parents too, but it still keeps the narrative that he’s been completely alone during the whole thing.
@Daniel Hague Definitely, I think it was a good move to make it seem like he never left that guest house during it. It really wouldn’t have hit as hard if it was in his full home, and with his girlfriend.
the fact that he showcases both the repetition and monotony of every pop song ever, while still sliding in the most clever of rhymes and lines. i swear this man is a lyrical genius
I thought Mother Mother was unbeatable when they rhymed "fire" with "fire" in their Wisdom. But Bo Burnham literally threw them off with his imagination and variety, rhyming three "dumplings" and five "bathrooms" in a row, this is XXI age poetry.
I'd say he's a hybrid between a comedian and an musician tbh since he writes and uses a lot of songs with deeper meanings in his shows, so I'd say don't label him and keep an open mind on his works, as he's truly an artist
@@TwhackyAttacky let me rephrase that. Probably because it doesn’t really fit with the “I’ve been stuck at home for the past year and the only communication I’ve had with other people is through my phone” theme of Inside
In a lovely way, that's what's so great about long relationships. Even when you ask each other to do something cumbersome and strange that you've never even thought of how to do, you still do it.
It's not that hard. I did just a base course into music composition and I've written tracks for a multitude of musical genres (various metal genres, post-metal, acoustic folk, funk, classical, hip-hop, pop, britpop, new wave, etc.) If I had gotten into the whole 4 year course I would've been able to do much more. I'm sure Bo understands the basic of music theory and songwriting along with technical/production aspects in order to make his music. And then there's talent and ongoing perseverance and effort into making it all work into what he actually does. He's got mad skillz bruh but be has simply worked hard for it too yo.
@@ReadyMindsetGo 😅 yeah this was probably the easiest song bo ever made in his life lol musically at least. Beat is very generic and basic. Hell even lyrically, the first verse barely has any words, the chorus repeats a lot, and the second and third verses are just conversational. Someone with bo’s level of creativity could write the lyrics to this song sitting down for 10 minutes lol.

yes, 100% true, but just wish he'd hit harder at the BS far-left crap we all have to pretend to agree with. Feminism is now considered low hanging fruit. if he truly was brave and edgy he'd go harder on bullshit like how most lefists can't answer "what is a woman?"
Everyone’s talking about the “Everyone’s a feminist line” but the line that hits hardest for me are the ones that come right before it. “I get it this is the real you. It’s a pleasure, nice to meet you”.

What a Beautiful and True rendition of what it is to Love and Honor someone else for 5 years. Its worse when there is but one bathroom and one must flee to the Dunkin next door.
This might be my favorite love song ever. Because only people in five-year relationships understand all the best parts of the relationship. The simple, silly things no one else sings about. The arguments over food. The banter about spiders. Hogging bathrooms. Mundane things that Ed Sheeran doesn't mention. They're not glamorous. But they're real. They're what sharing a life with someone is all about. My wife and I DIED when we heard this.

Handy reference chart for Dumpling equivalents: - 10-12 thick cut fries, 15-20 thin cut fries. Must be fresh. - 1/2 an eggroll. - 1 crispy Crab Rangoon. - 1 jumbo tempura shrimp. - 2 chicken nuggies. This is a good baseline but haggling is acceptable based on filling type, size and flavor quality. If you steal a dumpling and it tastes like shit, that’s your problem, you owe payment in full. “Still you, still me, still here” is such a wonderful line… borders between a romantic and adversarial tone, and really elegantly encloses the message of the song.
IKR i love it so much
My god are Bo Burnham fans the worst. Like wtf is this lmao
@@Gush27 I think it’s a fair analysis of the line? The song is trying to counter mainstream portrayals of relationships found in popular songs by speaking of small, personal quarrels between the singer and his partner instead of some big sweeping, general statement about how much they love each other and how perfect everything is. I found it cool that the particular line I commented about bordered between the “romantic” or “adversarial” tone because it implies that the disagreements they get in are just as important a part of their romantic relationship, so in that way it “encloses the message of the song.”
I’m not a Bo fan at all, as this is the first song I’ve heard by him… I’m sorry to hear there is stigma about Bo fans misinterpreting or over-analyzing his songs, and I am sorry that I am playing into that and contributing to the perceived cringe of the fanbase in your eyes and turning you away from the song.

I think its the extra D in "Your wholD world view collapses as soon as there's a spider" part.
@@ramboso9kp i mean he couldve just rerecorded that part if that was the sole reason, i doubt it was that
The song was good. It just didn't fit in with the film itself, because most of his songs are just him being alone inside his house.
He is so freaking talented but never takes himself too seriously and I love that
Tbf he is rhyming the word before bathroom each time. Poo, blue, guestroom, two.
The enitre spider rant, and then just... *bathroom.*
He takes himself very seriously. Listen to "All Eyes on Me", notably the part where he's sharing why he stopped doing shows. Then go listen to the Kanye rant video and listen to the second half of the song.

This song should have been on Inside itself it's that good.
I feel this way about a lot of the outtakes. They're just as funny and well-made but perhaps didn't fit with the rest of the show. For this one I think it's the depiction of physical interaction with another person, which contradicts the theme of isolation and loneliness.
Too much funny, doesn’t really fit. You can see with the outtakes it’s much more light and full of gags than the finished product
@@funx24X7 yo, well articulated! Spot on too.
If you think it’s good you can just say it’s good. It clearly doesn’t fit on inside and is pretty obvious why it’s not in it

The fact that this was an OUTAKE is unfathomable. The dumpling and spider parts are my favorite from this entire special.

They're amazing but has nothing to do with the Covid situation, so him cutting it is just a great sign of his complete control and awareness of what he's doing.
@@filiporvik2782 yeah, im guessing he thought it came off as if he wasnt completely isolated for covid in one room and had his partner with him, which probably wasn’t the vibe he wanted to go with
@@clemclemclemclemcl Why would this song give that impression when the others didn’t?
@@filiporvik2782 because this song he plays and portrays 2 different people? Am I forgetting other songs where he does this?
My theory on why this was cut: it seems like the narrative he ended up wanting in the end was that he was completely alone during the whole time making this special. I think introducing any other character into it that he's directly interacting with ruins that narrative. Oddly enough, I think even introducing a spider into the equation ruins that narrative in a certain way.
That’s what I think happened too
what about sexting?
@@isaaclehmann1729 hes alone in there too, even if there’s technically another person, theyre in his phone and then the phone dies

Then, you really shoulda gotten some when we put in the order"

The timing on this is so excellent - my 5 year anniversary with my partner is next month. Bo figured out how to put the daily affectionate frustrations that come with being with someone for so long into this song beautifully.
I particularly MUST relate to the "you can google it, you're an adult" line because the number of times I've said that....

3:27 is where it really hits 😢
Thank you!!
😆😆😆
I know.. I didn't unclog that poo in the other bathroom for nothin. 😭😭
Literally my favourite part
EXACTLY
There's so much to adore about this, but I just need to mention the quality of the acting. The timing, the expressions... just so beautiful and pleasing to watch. Thanks Bo ❤
Image being the spider hearing them argue 💀
Handy reference chart for Dumpling equivalents:
- 10-12 thick cut fries, 15-20 thin cut fries.
These are the rules!
Hope Bo saw this and immediately starts making notes
20 chicken nuggies*
2 dinosaur chicken nuggies. 4 regular.
This dude just chilling in the comments, unsung, saving relationships.
underrated comment. this honestly should be in the handbook.
The beat before “still here” is something I’d never have thought to do on my own but it’s so perfect
