    I remember that ride from back when I was around five. The only thing I remember is the fact that the gift shop had an actor playing Doc Brown. He pretended to be a wax figure. I said, "He looks so real." He quickly yelled, "I am real," and scared the shit out of me. To this day I still have the picture with him on my wall.

    Why does Universal Studios keep closing all of their classic rides that made the park iconic? Disney does an excellent job of preserving their classic rides for future generations to see by constantly expanding their parks. Universal Studios always builds a new ride over the old one and they never expand their park. I feel like Universal should build a third park and revamp all of their classic rides. It can be called Retroversal Studios as a tribute to the early 90’s rides.

    • @Ultrabalor
      @Ultrabalor 6 лет назад +100

      It's likely to do with the factors from the attractions being expensive to run nowadays, to not appealing anymore like they were back in the day.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 6 лет назад +130

      Rest assured, Disney does pretty frequently close and replace old rides (or sometimes just abandon them and leave them standing), and there are a lot of Disney-fan videos out there complaining about it. As well as requests for a Walt Disney World fifth gate just consisting of revivals of extinct rides (which will never happen either, but it's a fun thing to dream about).
      Universal doesn't have anything like the vast space for expansion that Disney bought in Florida back in the Sixties. They have, however, just acquired a new plot of land some distance from their current Orlando resort that they're clearly angling to develop into a third theme park. At this point, nobody knows exactly what's going to be there.

    • @Celticfan34
      @Celticfan34 5 лет назад +32

      If you mean Disney World, then yes, they do save a lot of the classics because they have a ton of land to expand and build new things. Disneyland, not so much, they don't have the space to expand. They have to replace the areas that aren't doing as well as the others.

    • @keithwellerlounge74
      @keithwellerlounge74 5 лет назад +38

      Sorry to say that Disney is very guilty of this too under Iger. The Great Movie Ride has fallen by the wayside, Pirates of Caribbean has been totally ruined and the likes of Space Mountain and Tower of Terror have been rethemed in some of their parks. It's only going to get worse as these soulless CEOs and new imitations of what we used to call imagineers realise they can make more money with cheap simulator-style rides that are simply themed by the latest Box Office success. Even classic films like Jaws, let alone original storylines, do not have the same financial draw anymore, in the eyes of these pricks anyway.

    • @gladiatordragon9219
      @gladiatordragon9219 5 лет назад +13

      Neither park chain is keeping all of their classic attractions, and they get some backlash when they're removed. Disney is better at this than Universal, no doubt, since the Hyperspace Mountains still are just reskinned Space Mountains, and still show it (and are temporary overlays), while Universal just tears it out. Universal just doesn't actually have that sense of something being classic. They removed one of the best classic dueling coasters ever, in favor of Harry Potter! But that's the problem with having world-famous amusement parks built off of highly-themed, IP-based, highly immersive attractions. While (most) Cedar Fair and Six Flags parks can get away with tearing out or moving most rides (as long as they bring a good replacement, such as how Goliath replaced Iron Wolf at SF Great America), Disney and Universal parks cannot do so (most of the time) without massive reactions. The public really has to not care about something (like Snow White's Scary Adventures or Stitch's Great Escape, neither of which made an uproar when removed) in order for there to not be a big reaction when something is demolished. While I will say I'm slightly (majorly) ticked at the removal of Maelstrom in favor of Frozen (Get your own attraction Frozen, don't reskin something else! I'm sure all that overmerchandise money can buy it!), even though I didn't care much about the ride beforehand, and I will say that Mission: Breakout is probably quite dated, I will say, as long as the original classics (such as Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain) are kept alive, Disney will still (mostly) please old-timers and newcomers alike, even though it leaves those looking for pure thrills like R&RC in the dust.

With the Simpsons, they were able to theme the area a bit with a quik-e-mart outside the ride too which looks nice.

    Here's a cool bit of trivia. This info comes from a friend and fellow engineer who worked at Universal after we graduated college.
    The original ride's "construction" issues were actually dangerous tremors set off by the motions of the ride cars. The original designers weren't able to test the ride with full load/all cars until a few months before opening. When tested at full load, the jerky motions produced so much torque that the ride supports almost torn themselves from the building foundation. Obviously too dangerous for the public, the openings were postponed for safety. After much discussion, it was decided to use only half the cars at one time to minimize the stress on the support structure and building. This created the epic wait times that made the ride famous.
    Even at half load the ride was still trying to tear itself loose from the building. Under the guise of "guest comfort" the ride motion was lessened to further reduce the amount of torque damage. This bought the ride some time, but it's days were numbered. The ride continued to damage itself and eventually engineers were spending too much time fixing it. Management pulled the plug after the ride spent most of it's seasons closed.
    The BTTF ride in CA fared a little better, since it was mounted on earthquake-proof shock frames. It was still detuned like the Orlando one and eventually started breaking more often.
    They were great rides, but time and old age just got to them. I remember riding the Orlando one just after it opened and almost tossing my cookies. It was a neck snapper! After the detune, it was ok but never as fun. It now lives in my memory.

    Hearing about why these attractions get replaced reminds me of how generational some things are. Universal was a park sold on the idea of "movie magic". To a kid growing up in the '80s and '90s, stuff like Back to the Future, Jaws and E.T. really said that. The new attractions that replaced them don't have that same appeal.

    • @keithwellerlounge74

      Yes and I find that really strange. They are a film studio, after all, the whole selling point is immersing the guests in the sets of the films they love (same with Disney's Hollywood Studios) If anything though, there are too many rides like Back to the Future now - the brilliant thing about Kongfrontation, Jaws, Earthquake/Disaster and Twister (and The Great Movie Ride at Disney) was they were like being in actual film sets.

    One thing that not many know is that while the BTTF ride in Japan officially "closed" on May 31, 2016, it was actually open for an extra half day on June 1, 2016 for crew members of USJ. The ride was walled off from the main park, but us crew members could access it through a gate on the offset area they opened up that afternoon.
    I would guess that most people know this already, but there were other special events for the general guests, such as paying for a special park entry ticket that would let you ride without waiting in line, as well as a special memorial framed photo of one posing with the DeLorean they used to have in front of the ride before they auctioned it off.
    They also had an actor dressed as Doc Brown drive a Delorean Time Machine down the main street from the entrance of the park, stop, and take photos posing with guests a few times a day until the last day of the ride.

I went to it the first time in 2010 or thereabouts, and it was my first time at a Universal Studios parks since going to the California one on family vacations in the 90s. Seeing all of my favorite rides from childhood STILL THERE--Jaws, BTTF, T2:3D--waiting to receive me and give me that shot of nostalgia was so great. I'm gutted that they shut down BTTF, as I didn't get to go again before it ended, but I'll always love USJ best among the Universal Studios parks just because it was like a snapshot in time for me.

    I went on this ride by myself (my mom wouldn't go on any rides) when I was 16 ish and I thought it was so amazing. I was so proud of myself of working up the courage since I was terrified of coasters at the time and wasn't sure what the ride was going to be like based on the outside of it. Afterwards I bought a tee shirt in the gift shop that said something like "Sit down and shut up" to commemorate my triumph.

    I saved watching this until today, March 30, 2019. This is the 12th anniversary of the closure of BTTF in Orlando. It was a sad day for me, as BTTF was the most fun place I’d ever worked at all my years at Universal Orlando. It was the only place where I got employee of the month, then getting the Bravo (divisional) employee of the month the next month. I worked with a great crew and had a lot of fun with them.
    I had also loved the BTTF movies and the cartoon show, and knowing a ride would exist was exciting. I loved the BTTF ride. It was a must-ride every time. Rest well, Back to the Future. You will always be the greatest ride of all time.

    My family and I went on the Florida version of this thing in the early 90's (probably 91). It was so incredible, we went twice in the same day. It was by far the highlight of the park at the time and we were left speechless. I had no idea that the ride had 2 separate domes. By the way, it did make a difference as to which car and row you were in, as to the level of immersion experienced. Being stuck in the corners definitely detracted from the optimal effect of the film. Nothing was sadder than my level of disappointment in the ride, when I road the LA version in 03. This was in no way do to the concept. The 70 mm was so degraded, colors dulled, projection brightness dimmed - even the sound was flat. These rides are truly like living breathing creations, they have a limited life span and especially with photo chemical film, they age. I'll always have my original memory and I have yet to experience a more impressive, immersive, narrative ride. I wonder how Peter Jackson's Universal Kong Experience was like? Poor Edlund, (had no idea) such a talent and Boss always seemed to get the shaft. Great Job KP!

    My dad worked for Universal Studios Hollywood as a software engineer and one summer while out of high school I got to ride into work with him and spend all day in the park during the week days. I've ridden Back to the Future at least 200 times. To this day it's still my favorite ride. Loved it! My theory on why it made people thirsty is that there was some mist effect at the end of the ride, which I suspect was made using propylene glycol, the same stuff that's used to create that mist effect at concerts (and vape). Some people get a dry throat from that, but it never bothered me.

    I rode this after it opened in the early 90's and it was my favorite ride there. I remember the last time I rode it in the 2000s it seemed very jerkey and not as immersive as the motion rides had improved a lot since the early 90's. It was almost outdated despite being a fun ride so it's probably right that they closed it. The short clip of the crash dummies doing the safety was always funny when we were kids.

    The reason no one got motion sickness is because you were crammed into those Deloreans like sardines! I've pics of the Florida exterior. A pic of mom proudly standing next to a Delorean -- she worked for GM. God, the memories. The holes in my heart. It's all gone. Everyone I shared those moments with are gone. But then I saw all those names at the beginning of your vid and realized that, of course, I'm not the only one remembering walking to BttF while sneering at ET across the walkway. LOL. I guess, I'm trying to say is thank you for reminding me I'm not alone. I couldn't be. Hell, all those people we stood in the queue with? But then, in your memories, those people are just filler, mannequins. I don't remember them, just me...mom...and the Delorean. She used to beam with such pride. BttF was also a family favorite. It seems to me that Universal Studios California likes to update everything every five or ten years. I went there in 1986, 1994, and in 2005. There was very little that was the same from one visit to the next. I guess they like to keep up with the changing franchises, but I also think they have deal with limited space since it is also a functional studio.

      Defunctland you should find out how to make the special effects at home. Like how to make banana breath, the water effects in alien encounter, the heat from the fire and flames in Jaws, and the jerky movements on the Delorean. Since you're planning on making a VR theme park, it should be fair that you don't leave the special effect behind.

    • @dapperloser3025

    • @locochavo4560

      mystery brick I've actually already found the solution. For the banana breath, just chop some banana slices into a small cup and put it up close on your nose and when King Kong is in your face, for Alien encounter, just spray yourself with water spray bottle when you hear the audio cue, for Jaws, just put a portable heater on your face when you see fire and flames, and as for the movement for the delorean, just rock yourself in a office chair.

    • @dapperloser3025
      @dapperloser3025 7 лет назад

      yes i can totally shove bananas up my nose, spray random water and violently shake myself when the headset blinds me from whats actually in front of me thus making it easy to accidentally use something else like Windex instead of water PURE GENIUS

      I know that as of 2012 the wrestling company TNA used the soundstage from Double Dare, and Clarissa Explains it all to film their show, TNA iMpact! I only know this because I lived like 1/2 mile from Universal City Walk. I do not know if they are currently using the stage for anything

    The displays are still there as of November 2017. Btw great idea for the VR DefunctLand. If Planet Coaster ever becomes more advanced I would suggest building it through there or No Limits 2.

      It was hard to enjoy the ride because we thought she was going to have a heart attack

    I remember going on this ride back in 2003, I found it kinda strange that the narrator sounded a lot like Hacker from Cyberchase, but that when I was a kid, and it was before I learned that they were played by the same actor.

    I worked at Universal Florida in 2008, Back to the Future is my ultimate favorite movie/trilogy... I was heartbroken when I realized I would finally be working in the park with the ride, after the ride was gone.
    My consolation prize was working in the restaurant right next to where they kept the DeLorean and the train in the park. I got to see them going into work everyday, plus hearing the Blues Brothers music wasn't too bad either. Not to mention there was an employee that had a DMC-12 almost everyday in the parking lot.
    So... considering everyone else was dealing with the loss, I got my daily fix of BTTF.

    Man, I loved that ride. I didn't even know it was gone until now, over ten years after they trashed it. It was my favorite ride at the park. I still have the Back to the Future II DeLorean model they sold in the gift shop on my shelf. That's tragic.
