@rossbaldwin4611 That's one way to look at it. Some of us have respect for both drivers even though it was a Holden Ford rivalry. I always liked the look of the Fords. I loved the Ford GTHO.
The Ford Falcon after 2003 features the mighty "Barra" engine. Exclusively Australian designed and built turbo charged, straight 6 cylinder engine pushing 320 HP stock. But like the 2JZ and RB engines, it's tune-ability and durability is legendary in Australia. Not uncommon to be pushing out 1000 HP with a few supporting mods. Benny's Custom Works, Toyota Cresta running a Ford Barra engine is currently running 7 second quarter mile runs.
Thanks Johnny great video and that little Torana in 1972 with the 6 cylinder is the car that beat the Ford Falcon GT and the 1979 the Torana X9A won Bathurst by 6 laps and broke the lap record on the very last lap and they didn't have the XB and XC Ford Falcon coups
I seem to recall the GTHO at 140mph was the fastest 4 door family sedan on the planet. Someone strapped a caravan on the back of a Falcon and set a world speed record of 128mph.
I was told by older family members that the gtho came about because of the brand new straight freeway system of Melbourne. With flat terrain, few corners and hardly any late night traffic people would "light up" on these freeways and outrun the police. The police in return asked Ford for more power and were given it in the form of "persuit specials". Then the civilians upped the ante and for a while there was a muscle car cold war between the police and civilians. My mates Godfather, a cop, had been given a persuit and he said the Sunday night the Tasman bridge collapsed, he was able to really open it up. Sunday night in a car like that, no traffic, and lives on the line, he said he let it rip, and wasnt disappointed.
weird translations on that video.. It was the Torana not the 'Toronto' and it was an indigenous Australian word and a beautiful Australian Car... So sad we lost our only local manufacturer here where Jobs and manufacturing have been shipped overseas in line with the rest of the developed world over the last 50 years. Hope one day we get a new local car manufacturer and cars again one day.
I knew the man who stamped all the GTHO's, he worked in the R&D department of Ford. He melted down and destroyed the original stamps right in front of me to prove his point. He and his old boss had a set each. He swore to his boss that he would take the stamp to his grave literally. No idea whether his old boss destroyed his set as well.
He failed to mention that the Valiant E49 really should of won that race. No one mentions how the Team decided to stop only once at the half way mark through the race. They were screwed over by the Executives who would rather spend their money advertising than put money into their racing team. They were 3rd at the half way mark, pulled in hard and fast. Replaced brakes and filled up the car in record time, but when they went to put the wheel nuts back on they found the studs were still red hot and the nuts had cooled down way too fast and wouldnt go back on. The team only had a cross brace with a steeringwheel welded onto it to get the nuts done up tight while everyone else had rattle guns that could simply jam on the nuts, cross thread be damned. (You get to see it in the Peter Brock special video, in the background you get the moment a crew member is screaming in rage and throws his crossbrace across pit lane. Then slowly walks off after it) They had to wait for the studs to cool down enough to get the nuts back on. which meant they ended up dead last again. Once back out on the track they managed to get all the way back to 3rd or 4th place before the end of the race. If they had of got out there on time they should of won with ease, they only needed the second half of the race to move up 2 places to 1st. Because of that they were ridiculed and the company just collapsed like a deck of cards.
Yeah the young guy running the team was given stuff all funds to do it the poor guy did a great job with what he had,man I love my valiants ive had 9 of them but never a charger sadly.
Good video but has plenty of errors. In regards to the XU1 Torana, they debuted in 1970 & whilst Holden did build 3 V8 XU-1's but they were never going to be called XU-2. A guy who was a machinist, built himself a V8 Torana street machine & made the XU-2 badges for his car.
Ai is always a problem, but this one was not as totally wrong as the others. As i think you already know, the Phase 3 GTHO is still the one and still pulls the big dollars at auction. That said, the XA GT RPO that followed the Phase 3 was the better car, and raced as a 2 door hardtop ( coupe ). The RPO engines were the Phase 4 engines, but not all the RPO's actually got a Phase 4 engine......but if you did, they did 160 MPH even when out of tune. After the XA model Ford went more for a popular looking design for non car people and the performance was turned down. We the public did not have to wait till 1973 to buy the Torana XU1.......the rules stated that 300 had to be sold to the general public BEFORE they could race.
Definitely not a Ford Fusion The Fusion is called a Mondeo down here A nice mid sized car that has some very similar styling but they are not the same car Falcon is a full size family sedan
its not really a top 10 list of muscle cars an Australian would have, their is no question that Ford and GM guys pretty much agree on is the 1971 Ford falcon GTHO phase 3 at no 1, and its a Hk 327 Bathurst Holden Monaro at 2, and the e48 charger which was the fastest car of its era with its 265ci 6cly triple webber carbs those 3 cars hold legend status in OZ all 3 will set you back over $1million for genuine cars, after those 3 theirs just to many to chose from both GMH, Ford, and Chrysler, myself I'm a GMH/Chrysler guy I hate fords, my current ride is a 2012 Holden VE HDT Group 3 which has a huge Turbo on a forged 427LS currently makes 1083kw you Yanks call them Chevy SS which is my baby
My dream car 1972 Charger VH E49

I remember I used to stand in the engine bay to work on my old HG kinga's 186. Same with the HJ 202 wagon I had as my surf chariot.

Yes we are quite aware how shit hot these cars are
Stralylie we love it mate
Cheers from oz
The XY GTHO was the quickest four door car in the world at the time.
Funnily enough I saw an A9X today in pristine condition.

Agree with your assessment that modern cars look alike. Problem is even more apparent in exotic cars today.

yeah Im Aussie and dont really like anything bodyshape after the 70's. Old Fords, Holdens and Valiants are the go, im not biased by manufacturer.
At its time the GT HO phase 3 was the fastest 4 door production car in the whole world
The falcon is not a fusion , it’s a stand alone car , bigger car with Barra 6 and coyote 5.0 . They share the ford global dna , similar grill .
It was the 80's there weren't a lot of great looking muscle cars from anywhere in the 80's.
A souped up Lada
They used to drive them to bathurst race them and then drive them home. lol
