- 4Runner 5 Year 130,000 Mile Review. I've had my 5th Gen 4Runner for 5 Years now and it's been my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. I've modified this thing almost to it's max and made it custom to my taste. Would I change it for another vehicle?

Hit me up if you are interested in the 4Runner. $32k, I can send you the listing. If you live in the Colorado area and have a built out 4Runner/Tacoma/Tundra, lets shoot a walk around! I want to keep the Toyota Content going strong.
I’ve had my 2014 4WD SR5 for a year and got it at 160k on the odometer and I’m about to hit 190k. Absolutely no mechanical issues and have loved it. Only maintenance I have done is oil changes and upgraded to height adjustable Bilstein 5100 shocks and leveled the front. Put on some Method 301 wheels and stock size Venom Power terra hunter tires. All off-road functions work just fine and have only gotten stuck once in really deep mud before I had off road tires
I'm currently looking at a 2016 at 160k. Carfax checks out per routine maintenance. How long ago did you get your 2014 as of today?! Glad to know nothing majorly wrong since you got it at that milage.
@@JustinThibodeaux-v3n just over 2 years ago as of this month and just replaced the battery last week for the first time since I’ve gotten it.
I bought my 2016 4Runner Trail Edition brand new on 2017 Memorial Day Weekend. I'll be taking it for the 175K Mile Interval Servicing on Friday. My only major repair that I've done was replacing the leaking water pump around 108K mile marker. Hoping to get to 300K miles one day!
I absolutely love my 2014 Trail edition 4wd 4 runner. Has 126,000 miles on it with no repair issues. It is one of my favorite vehicles that I have ever owned. I love the reliability.
Yeah really so far everything has been great on the 4Runner. Easiest vehicle I’ve ever owned.
I appreciate videos like this so much especially since there's not a lot of proper long term reviews. Granted I know each vehicle and driver/ owner situation is different but at the core it's good to see one go the distance.
Breh. Remote hole punch? That is legendary 🍻
Gotta get around the RUclips censorship somehow lol.
Was just in the market for one ended and I knew I recognized this vehicle from market place , sick build man
Thanks! Yeah I had it up on marketplace but I finally listed it some other places.
Been thinking the same and putting my silver 4Runner and might go EV. The trades/offers are good, 4Runner value is great! Still debating though, paying about 140 a month for gas would be saving a bunch.
Yeah after offroading with Rivians I considered EV for a bit as well. Once they get the long distance towing better on EVs I might make the switch as well.
I wish I had kept my ‘22 TRD OR-P T4R. I drive Uber/Lyft and the MPG were just too low. I currently have a Tesla Model Y (since 1/27/23) which rocked but Tesla is buying it back under the Lemon Law because my
A/C broke 3 times already (1st was 22 days after I picked it up).
I’m going to get another 5th Gen before the turbo 6th Gen
Sweet review! Excited to see what’s next!
Yeah I’m excited about the next build as much as I love this one.
@@OXFOOT I’d be curious to see how a tundra does on our tighter trails. Like maybe we should revisit Santa Fe peak as a test run. I need more towing too, but I seem to buy the same thing over and over again 😂
That metal piece on the rear window…ever thought of doing the same for all the windows for protection (from break-ins), usability or both?
You might be on to something. Not sure where it would mount in the front 4 windows but if someone figured it out that might be a good idea.
I always go to your page for 4Runner and gear review
There will still be tons of 4Runner content on the page. I still know these things like the back of my hand and have tons of friends with them. I would like to get a 3rd Gen here as soon as my life situation allows for two vehicles.
I would say 90% of my buddies with rigs have 4Runners
I installed a master switch for all electric additions so that none of them can drain the battery. Never have any issues with a dead battery. At some point I'll add shore power so the batter will always be fully charged.
Great clip, nice truck. Texas 5th gen ORP, KO3.
Currently fighting myself on if I want to sell my 3rd Gen Tacoma and go to the previous gen Tundra myself. Driving this thing from the VA/SC to CO and WY made me realize how much of a dog it is. Plus towing anything over a single axle u-haul just ain't happening.
Yeah as much as I live the Tacomas and 4Runners I can’t have something this new plus a tundra. Logically the tundra plus a GX or older 4Runner would be my ideal set up.
26k a year driving is a ton of driving, good for u!
Sorry it has 139k on it but it felt dishonest to round up and 139,000 doesn’t look good in a thumbnail or title.
Oh and also to clarify I bought it with 60k on it lol. I’ve only put about 80k on it.
How much lift do you think the Bilstein shocks / springs give you? I have a TRD pro I am thinking of adding the westcott lift or Eibach springs, and wondering if I could fit the same size wheel and tire
Where did you get the Auxbeam molding mount?Ihave been searching but everyone only has spod stuff! 🤦🏼♂️
How are those inside rear window panels holding up. Really interested for my build since im trying to keep my bed platform low so i have to move more items towards the walls with a possible ceiling net
Perfectly fine. They work great but I’m getting away from using magnetic stuff on them just because if I got in a wreck they are going to fly right into the back of my head. I would only use stuff that is bolted to the actual molle panel.
When are you going to start selling the AUXBEAM 3D printed piece? My money is waiting....
Oh man you’re right, I need to get up with the people producing it and see when it’ll be ready.
@@OXFOOT if you have the print info I can get a gun guy I know to make me one. :0)
Lexus GX is the logical answer there. I'm surprised you haven't done the research on them already.
I did a video with them as the main focus 2 years ago and almost bought one then. They don’t have a much higher tow rating sadly. As much as a Tacoma which is nice but still no bed. The plan is to get the tundra now and then decide either GX or 3rd Gen 4Runner after that. I personally like the GX a little more but they seem to be crazy expensive where I live.
@OXFOOT tundra is where I'm headed. 06 tacoma is where I'm at now, along with my 3500 pound camper I looked at the the first gen GX as a cheap(ish) toy hauler - I don't need 2 vehicles tho.
4runner looks way better and is probably more reliable
@livingsacrifice7639 I would miss having a truck bed or else I'd totally go 4runner.
4Runner kind of needs to be re-geared the moment you change to taller tires.
Yeah I think anything over 285/70/17 should get a regear. It’s not the worst thing ever but it’s definitely a lot slower.
I have same set up with 34 inch tires on a v8 2007. How dose the v6 handle the heavy tires. Is a regear in your future
My 2019 has push button start. I found out accidentally when I locked my car 3 times in a ghetto area.
Where can I buy the panel where you have mounted auxbeam?
It’ll be At Runnin4tacos soon. I think they are still trying to sort out the final stuff on it.
Would you recommend anyone to purchase a limited 4x4 for mainly city use. Don't intend to offroad at all. Or should I just get a TRD OffRoad Premium
If you want comfort the limited is the best. If you want the offroad aesthetics and comfort the offroad premium is a good move. The limited will still be the most comfortable but I've never owned one, I've just heard great things.
Given your 5 year experience, have you rust proof in anyway your 4Runner on annual basis before winter or at all? Thanks.
I keep the undercarriage super clean in winter. Wash it after every snow storm. I’ve not had any rust really. I mean a tiny bit if surface rust in corners and stuff but same as any car of that age.
Which year Tundra are you going to pick up?
Looking at the 2nd Gen, around 16-21. Would I love a new one? Yeah for sure. I think it just financially doesn’t make sense as a RUclips truck unless my channel was making way more money.
Damn. 5 years 130k? A lot of driving
Sorry I might not have been clear in the video, it's at 130k or actually almost 140k but I bought it at 60,000 ish. 5 years of ownership but not 139k all on my own.
What is that front bumper?
Would a $7500 Super Charger answer your towing needs?
It would answer my power needs for adding all the extra weight I have but as far as I understand super charger doesn’t increase towing capacity.
Doubt the tires made your hoses blow pump can only put out so much hose was prolly previously damaged
I just 137 on my 17 cement pro and it’s been flawless so far
Yeah I have a friend with a 17 and 230k on it. Crazy what kind of miles these things are capable of.
@@OXFOOT I love this thing. It’s been so great they we just bought my wife a solar octane 23 trd pro
@@YourMomSaidGetAJob tried to convince my Gf to get one but she’s all about the Subarus lol. Also good cars though but not as rugged.
Sold? If not where’s it posted?
Yeah sold a few months back
When you say 34’s was it 34x12.5r17 or 305/70r17?
305/70/17, so roughly within 0.6% difference from 34/12.5/17 in height.
@@OXFOOT sweet thanks for the reply, would you say it’s a lesser of a headache to go with 295/70r17 or 305/70r17 rather than 35’s (35x12.5 or 315’s)
Still for sale? What are you asking for it?
It’s for sale for $31k

130K?? Heck this isnt'e even broken in good yet... these will easily do a million miles-- WELL!!!! I'm thinking of buying an SR5 or maybe a TRAIL edition- they are JUST as capable as the TURDS (play on trd- and jokingly because I love thse things).. just that the driver has to do it himself- instead of a bunch of electronic aids... I"D rather drive my OWN... PLUS the Trail edition will do a lot better MPG wise!! That way , it will have the capabilties of handling a rough winter with deep wet snow-- or rainy weathers.. etc.. but still do fine on the street for my regular driving. I'm 67 and injured so won't be going that much anyway..
Get a GX so much better for the money. I get 15mpg city and 20 on the highway on mine. Tow capacity is only higher
They are waaayyy over inflated here in Colorado. A 2014 4Runner is basically the same price as a 2008 GX.
But yeah I may get one in NC (where I’m from) at some point.
Supercharge it if it's under powered!!
Lol that shit was like $7k. I looked into it for a bit.
I don’t know that supercharging it necessarily makes the towing capacity up though. But certainly would be better in the mountains just moving itself.
Slap a supercharger on it 😁
I thought about it until that one 4Runner youtuber blew his engine up. To be fair he really doesn’t know what he’s doing with builds from what I’ve seen but it still scared me off of it.
117k miles and still running like a bull
Dude, the hand gesturing has gotta stop
hell no
Mine got 225 on a 2010
Damn, still running good?
@@OXFOOT hell yeah running mint still 👌🏽 transmission has gotten 3 services and still shifting great these things are tanks
@@BijanYwhat mile intervals did you service it?
Every time I watch Revere overland I feel like building up a Tundra as well. He has really built a very nice rig.
Mine is going to be the last model tundra. As much as I like the new one they are just a little steep for my blood.
Do it!
@@OXFOOTthe last of the best trucks ever made
I still own a Ram 2500. I just bought a 2023 runner, so I can wheel again... Thanks for showing the vehicle...
You mentioned Tundra, it's a bigger vehicle and running trails gets tight or not possible... Running trails with downed tree's, or width of road, makes slim passing... Just a thought...
The 2019 Trd pro’s come with remote start. I figured it out on mine by accident lol
Yeah I thought they did. I think the 2020s even have push start.
Good luck with your new endeveor🤙
Thanks! Still going to be 4Runner content in the channel but just other peoples 4Runners
What was the mod that caused the battery issues? Was it the part or the way it was installed?
I installed it wrong. No one else had the problem I did so IDK what happened.
very nice!!! I just realized you are in CO. I am in Aurora. Nice truck
Yeah I’m in Golden/Arvada area easy to pop up to the mountains but it’s a bit crowded over here.
Love the video Jason. I have the last trail team edition of the FJ Cruiser series. I love it and I’ve been modifying it since 2017. I only have 54k miles on it and I’m near finishing the build. The only issues I’ve had have been from the modifications. Toyota is definitely my platform being I’ve turned every wrench on all my mods from Kings suspension to a Whipple supercharger, I’ve learned a lot and broke a lot too 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
OX, my 2019 looks almost identical to yours. Love the silver personally. Where can I find the Front bumper/winch? Got the DDI seat jacker and MMP, really like that. Thanks
Don’t get me wrong I love the silver but for videography I end up blowing out the 4Runner since the woods and all that are usually darker.
amzn.to/3rAer4i
That was the winch and the bumper is just a C4 Bumper with high clearance additions.
Bad ass T4R ORP,did you change front bearings, ball joints and tie rods yet? Thanks
Never changed any of that in the time I’ve had it and offroaded.
@@OXFOOT wow that’s great! Did you had 1” front differential drop? I’m one of your subscriber and also overland engineer ,I got my 2021 trd ORP premium since following you guys with my mods learned a lot of stuff I got Eibach stage 1 pro truck lift kit 3” front and 2”rear,I had 1 inch dirt king front differential drop but my tires are 33x10.5r17 Kenda Klever RT’s on stock wheels with spider track 1.25” spacers so far I love it.i was looking at portals 74Weld has it for Tacomas but soon they’re making for 4Runners kinda pricey but you can run 38’s or maybe 40’s..
GREAT REVIEW and vehicle- and I don't blame you-I'd "baby" it too-- because it will do most anything- no need to hammer it and beat it to death on trails... you can have just as much fun slowly , deliberately and safely. In fact-- I'm 67 , been mashed between two trucks in 99 and a sudden jolt to the side could easily paralyze me-- (and they happen often on trails if you DON'T take it easy).
I could use some real world 4runner advice. My fam is considering nabbing one of these final 5th gens. Narrowed it down to the Offroad Premium, Offroad Premium with KDSS, or the TRDPro. Resale value is meaningful, though we do keep vehicles for the long term. Mostly on-road and light trail performance prioritized. No major offroading or modification intended at this time (perhaps mods in future), but we like to have serious get-out-of-a-jam capability just in case. How would you rate these three options?
THE BEST OFFROAD's
😎👍 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER 70, 150, 200, 300
😎👍 LEXUS GX, LX
I like the TURD wheels... might get those for mine. :)
great setup! hope everything works out for you!
Yeah I’m hoping it sells soon. Already missed out on two big sponsors because selling a modified vehicle takes too long lol.
Want to make some 4Runner content here soon though.
@@OXFOOT I thought about that. For now I just watch videos like yours to get ideas. My 4R is still bonestock. I'm still thinking what wheels and tires and levelling kit that will suit my everyday driving. I dont really do offroading mostly dirt road and camping with my family.
All that added weight AND 34" tires and you're getting 15mpg without a regear? Interesting.
The 4Runner has a robust, welded frame. The Tundra, not so much. They tend to "flex" then break. This is well documented. Best of luck with that.
Maybe you’re talking about the new ones? Never heard of that happening on the 2.5 Gen tundras.
are your front axles oem? if not what are they and what are your opinions on them? i just saw a video on the new tacoma having a failure. theyre very expensive and im having second thoughts. thanks for the video.
I never changed out my front axels and never tore a CV boot. I can’t say it’s 100% bullet proof but I never personally had any issues.
Have you ever drain and fill the trans and the 4x4 system?
I did the diff at the interval and I think I did the trans but I can’t quite remember.
I want one of these so bad but they’re so expensive
Yeah they aren’t cheap. Sharper to buy them built than to build it yourself though. Mine would probably be closer to $38k to build it where as mine is going for around $30k now.
@@OXFOOT Ah makes sense. Saving up for one. 30k is definitely obtainable for most long as proper budgeting is there. Any key things to check when looking at one?
I just bought a 2024 ofp in white,i kind of regret not getting silver instead.
Nah white and/or black are the best colors for Toyota. Everything goes with it.
