As a blonde woman who connected to Annabeth's character as a kid because of how much I hated the "dumb blonde" stereotype, your point about how black women are stereotyped the same way by an even greater amount is exactly my feelings about the live action casting. The point of her blonde hair was to make a certain demographic feel good about themselves so why is it an issue that they changed it if that still rings true? In an even more meaningful way too. Also most of the people who have an issue with Annabeth not being blonde probably aren't even blonde themselves.
I also love Lin as Hermes. I think people underestimate him so much just cuz he can be a little goofy at times. He’s still a great actor and an amazing choice for Hermes!
35:54 I would also like to add that I think another complaint that fits in this category are people saying that Percy was out of character because he was too serious and not funny enough. When I reread the book, it struck me how depressed, stoic and quiet he was, and I feel that this is in large part due to how he was dealing with the loss of his mom and being thrust into this strange new world. He’s not going around cracking jokes and being the class clown. I feel that many people are forgetting how most of the humor comes from Percy’s narration, and show Percy is how he would look to everyone who cannot hear his thoughts. I feel that a re-read of “Sea of Monsters” would show him, comparably, a lot more outwardly humorous since he’s used to everything and he has his Mom back.
I don't really have a super hot take, but one of my strongest takes is that I think some of the most vocal complainers/criticizers would have complained about season 1 regardless or how good/bad it was. Some of the criticisms I've seen on social media (from the people who talk about how season 1 was terrible), give off the vibe that they were genuinely expecting the show to be an exact copy of the book with absolutely zero differences.
If the show was an exact replica of the books, I think I'd have found it boring and too predictable to be able to fully enjoy it. I appreciate the care and skill that went into making it surprising even for us book fans without sacrificing any major plots/story arcs. I loved all the twists and turns that managed to stay true to the characters and their journey. I also loved how a lot of the changes seem to be paving the way for the rest of the books (that I hope we get!)
7:41 I think the musical also portrayed Grover very interestingly; in Tree on the Hill you can see his loyalty and care for Annabeth, Luke, and Thalia and his immense guilt because of Thalia’s death (Tree on the Hill is also a brilliant way to show Grover’s character, Thalia’s backstory, and the impact it has on Grover all at once)
I love that moment in the musical! I love the musical more than the show I think. At least so far. The books I think are better than the musical and show though.
20:59 YES THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS UP! I was rereading it for the first time in a while after the show came out and i was like "oh i mean that was cool" and it didnt even last that long in number of pages. people are 100% clouded by what the movie did in terms of energy but the only reason it has that much energy is because they made it a montage with an upbeat song playing over it the whole time and also THE COLORS the movie was very vibrant and colorful the whole scene where as the show has it be vibrant and colorful in the lobby and a bit in the arcade area but when percy and annabeth run into hermes and have that whole conversation its not, which honestly makes sense cause it'd be a little weird to have that deep and sad of a conversation with a bunch of bright colorful lights and dua lipa playing in the background LOL
People overlook book flaws, and are a 1000 times more critical of stuff that comes out when they're not kids anymore. They just accept things like Luke's inconsistent goals,Tyson not having the hair or eye color of his father and brother.Rhe fleece having healing power that is never used to save someone again. And of course, progressive concepts like the children of battle and warfare gods being girls with the boys being an afterthought.
I agree. Like when people criticized the exposition in the first two episodes (in my opinion, it was pacing that was really wonky in those first couple episodes, not the exposition) while conveniently forgetting that the “The Lightning Thief” book is basically exposition personified (it was still fairly well-executed, but I just found it funny how so much of the world building in the first book was just everyone around Percy lore dumping on him).
@BookLover-bj5fx If they were consistently critical of telling information about the fantasy world these people would dislike even the best fantasy movies ever made, which are arguably the best movies ever made. When I look at Lord of the Rings now,I see where the telling is,there's a lot of it. If I made RUclips videos,I would probably "critique" the expository lines.
So me and my brother watched the PJO show together (I watched it before him but whatever) he isn’t a big PJO fan like I am. So by the time we were on the 4th episode I asked him who do u think is the thief and he straight up looked at me and said “I think it might be Annabeth” and am just trying to keep a straight face here. This is my older brother ppl. But anyway he went on to think it was Ares then blah blah till the big Luke reveal but now he’s mad that he has to wait for season two. Mission complete: successfully made my bro a PJO fan kinda, he still hasn’t read the books (Meanwhile am on the fifth book am going strong)✌️
Even tho the show has some flaws which thankfully could be fixed in future seasons, i loved it. But what bothers me is the way people criticize the show and act like it's an abomination and it failed the high expectations. Like no, it's not that bad, it was good, not quite great as i hope in the future. But haters are gonna hate. Very excited for season 2 tho
I'm a Percy Jackson fan myself, but I'm a film major myself and I've taken a scriptwriting class and I can say that it's far from easy. Absolutely loved this show compared to the shows, and the only issue I have is we didn't get Poker Face in the casino episode lol. Can't believe it's been a year and I can't wait for Season 2 next year.
I also agree with your takes on how they did Luke, really gave him more depth and Charlie’s portrayal was so good. Loved the changes of episode 5,was really good and people criticize over the littlest things in the show and can’t seem to see that if the show was to adapt almost everything part of the book then it would be boring. I’ve loved the changes made so far and I can’t wait to see what’ll be different in Season 2 and hopefully will lead to a potential Season 3❤ the channel
I totally agree with the married comment coming from luke felt unnatural. grover making that comment would have made a lot more sense it could’ve been about them constantly arguing since he on quest with them. they could’ve add another scene of percy and Annabeth arguing again and grover could’ve said “my gods you guys are starting to sound like an old marry couple when you argue.”
I adored some of the changes they made in the show, the way Charlie portrays Luke is amazing and how the relationship between them is a bond which makes the betrayal hurt more. I agree with the emphasis on how they made Luke and Annabeth seem more like siblings and I don’t particularly like when people mention the end of book five when Luke says “do you love me?” people say it’s weird but I see it as more of a him wondering if she still loves him like a brother or if she still cares for him 😭😭. Loved the changes with medusa, it shows more depth and how misunderstood she is sometimes. Season 1 is amazing and an adaptation cannot 100% adapt the book and people will complain no matter what, I do agree with the real constructive criticism is it being too dark which I agree on - most of the criticism I’ve seen is toward the actors looks, especially the fact that annabeth is black. Rick chose Leah herself and Leah is an amazing annabeth, I loved her acting on the show. I value personality and how they portray the characters so much more. Anyways sorry for the big rant 😭😭
Hi Cam! I first off just want to clarify that I adore your channel and you’re definitely one of my favourite channels to watch that focuses on PJO. It’s one of my all-time favourite series and being able to watch this series is a ginormous gift. I couldn’t be happier that it exists. I do have some of my own “hot takes” about the show and I hope they aren’t too harsh. I want to emphasize that I don’t think the show is bad and that it isn’t worth watching. I immensely enjoyed watching it as it was airing but I did come away with some more neutral and slightly-negative opinions. 1. The show watered down the story so much and I’m worried that it’s setting a precedent for the upcoming season. I don’t think the show should intentionally stray away from appealing to a very young audience but I do feel that they drained the story of so many different details and layers. They took out a lot of the emotional undercurrent from the series. Run-time and episode lengths are some of the show’s most pressing issues. I wish that they approved a 10-episode season with 50-minute run-times. I think that would have given them so much more room to explore the world and bring it to life. The story just feels so much more subdued than I expected it to. I understand that budget restraints and creative restraints exist but I just wish that they could’ve found a middle ground. 2. Rick being involved as much as he is might cause major narrative issues down the line. He’s been adamant that he wants to prioritize a very young audience as that is the audience of the original series. I don’t think this is a mistake. Aiming the show towards children is something that I always thought Rick should do as alienating the target audience would go against his entire ethos. I don’t expect him to prioritize an older audience. What I am concerned about is everything that was sacrificed in order to keep the show appropriate enough for those of very young ages. The original series has a bite and an edge to it that wasn’t very apparent in the majority of the first season’s episodes. I’m worried that this approach is going to cause issues once we get to certain storylines. The series is so layered with so many complexities but I’m concerned that the writers are going to strip these complexities if they are deemed as inappropriate. Intentionally watering the content down even more just seems like a flawed choice. The book series is already for children. Children also don’t need to be told such sanitized stories. They can handle darker and more complex stories and themes. The original series - as it is - is extremely kid-friendly but the show shied away from those nuanced complexities. The entire story is very much “made for kids” but the underlying themes and darker plotlines don’t exactly scream “kid-friendly”. The show feels like it made a lot of changes that make it appear as being “made for kids” rather than being “kid-friendly”. I think that they should’ve undertaken different approaches to this as sanitizing the story as much as they did is just doing a disservice to the original series. I don’t see why they had to tone the story down to make it appeal to a young audience. The story is essentially about child warriors who often die before reaching adulthood and that was very sanitized in the new series. 3. The show’s production value is lacking. I wish the colour-grading was different than it is. It just felt flat and a bit hollow at times. I hope that they are able to utilize different cameras and commit to more ambitious camera work and angles. The cinematography could’ve been so much more exciting and epic than it was.
i saw someone on tiktok comment that they didn't watch the show because percy has blonde hair so i replied that it makes more sense tbh cause the blonde hair gives the vibe of the sand and the blue eyes gives the vibe of the sea and then they replied saying that he just looks better with black hair and he's not a blondie in their opinion. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK???
as a theatre kid i think we definetly take the lin jokes way to far sometimes, like yes he has lots of funny photos out there and i'm not really a fan of his singing but he is an amazing songwriter and actor. i had no idea what to expect from him as hermes and i was shocked, i think he did amazing. he captured the emotions and backstory of the character so well and also worked great with walker and leah. (also with him being a good songwriter all of the recent disney movies that he did the songs for have had amazing soundtracks, like moana, encanto, the live action little mermaid and this is just the disney movies not even going into hamilton or in the heights, but the recent ones that he hasn't worked on have not been good like wish had maybe one good song and i havent seen moana 2 yet but i've heard the music is just fine nothing special)
I think I'm the only one who hated the movie for a totally different reason than the pacing or changes. It lacked the feelings for me and I just couldn't empathize with anyone (it made me even hate the main character. Percy's character was SO wrong and the complete opposite of what made Percy a hero. Your mom just "died" and you're being all macho and crushing on a girl?! And Grover was just disgusting), while the book and the show made me have feelings even for characters like Luke and Medusa. So, I guess if people are coming to the show only for the action and the mindless "fun" then yeah, I understand that they might not enjoy it. I found it perfect in terms of characters and how they're depicted. My other "hot take" is that while episode 6 generally is my least favorite as well (I couldn't care less about the casino scene anywhere be it book/movie or show) that scene of getting the cab out the garage is just hilarious and so fitting for 13yo Percy that it makes me go back to that episode every once in a while. It was such a refreshing addition to the story imo.
YES especially in the first movie we barely see any interactions between percy and sally and the ones that there is they aren't heartfelt or make me care about the characters in any way so when sally "dies" like sure it's sad because we know thats his mom but it doesn't show us the extent of how close they are so why are we supoosed to care so much about her. meanwhile the show gave us the whole first episode full of showing us the relationship between percy and sally and how close they are and many of the scenes were very heartfelt moments that also connect to each other (like percy saying "i'm afraid something might be really broken now" to sally's speech before the minotaur "you are not broken. you are singular, and you are a miracle." also repeating the hold fast brave the storm.) AND they continued to show this throughout the show with the flashbacks as well as the way percy talks about her ("i am sally jacksons son!" will forever be iconic)
HOT TAKE : I don’t like how short all the action scenes were, the fight with ares was very short, and I get in the book it’s longer cause we’re reading Percy’s thoughts, and we can’t do that here in the show, but where they could have maybe taken a little longer with the scene, cause I felt like we entered an action scene and I got exited but then i blink a few times and it’s over. (This is my opinion)
the point about the books themselves being imperfect is SO TRUE. i get that the books came first- it’s literally been over a decade since i read the lightning thief for the first time- but to act like they are PERFECT and would be compelling when adapted 1:1 is nuts. the chapters “i play pinochle with a horse” all the way to “i blow up a perfectly good bus” would be SO ANNOYING if they were translated 1:1 on screen bc of how no one actually tells percy anything. also you’d need to give percy an internal monologue for a 1:1 translation to be meaningful, and that’d not only get old FAST, but it would also defeat the purpose of the 3rd person perspective. on the point about the kids knowing too much, i frankly prefer it. i’m supposed to believe sally told percy stories about greek mythology. annabeth’s been at camp since she was seven. this is the only world grover knows. they SHOULD be able to clock suspicious stuff easily😭 it’s forgivable in TLT because they’re still rookies on their first quest, but it still makes way more sense for them to be able to guess at what they’re walking into. this was a great video! i love hearing from people who loved the tv show. thank you for sharing 🫡
100% agree and with the second point they especially should have clocked medusa??? even if sally for some reason didn't tell percy that story it's SO prevelant in pop culture theres no way he wouldn't know it LOL
I prefer the books better but the show is okay. I do wish that it was more entertaining. My brother was bored out of his mind while watching it. I try to talk about it with him but he doesn’t remember much lol. To be fair he does have a very short attention span. He’s only ten but I think he would like the books better. I don’t know though because he hates reading and won’t read the books. He got the book from the library and read like one page and gave up. My sister likes the show. It seems she likes the interviews with the cast more than the actual show at times though lol. She won’t read the books either cause she also hates reading. As someone who loves reading idk how I got siblings who hate reading books. They’d rather watch movies/tv shows. Which I don’t mind but at times there are pieces of media I don’t understand how they like it. My mom who loves reading and loves the books wasn’t interested in the show that much either. So I don’t really know many people who like the show beside my friend but she didn’t really like the casino episode. All I’m saying is that people who aren’t huge fans of Percy Jackson, I don’t think they will enjoy the show as much as Percy Jackson fans.
My hot take having not watched this video all the way through: Obviously if you’re into accuracy, the show is for you. But if we’re choosing which one is better purely as a viewing experience, the movie is way better.
In fairness, he only did it in order to protect Percy from the monsters because otherwise they would have killed him at Yancy. Also, in the books, Grover and Chiron baisically gaslight him for a month about the existence of Mrs. Dodds (which causes him to get so upset he gets expelled) which I don’t think is much better than what Grover did in the show.
@@eerb3220 glad to hear you agree!!!
46:58 Also agree with this, I thought it was very weird they didn’t mention Riptide’s name at all the entire season.
And if Percy was constantly quiping online critics would say: "Marvel humor is everywhere and it ruins emotional depth!"
I don't really have a super hot take, but one of my strongest takes is that I think some of the most vocal complainers/criticizers would have complained about season 1 regardless or how good/bad it was. Yup. They wanted an exact replica of the books and that's rarely realistic. Some complaints are valid, others are just whining.

51 MINUTES?? merry christmas to me 🙂↕️
HOT TAKE : I don’t like how short all the action scenes were, the fight with ares was very short, and I get in the book it’s longer cause we’re reading Percy’s thoughts, and we can’t do that here in the show, but where they could have maybe taken a little longer with the scene, cause I felt like we entered an action scene and I got exited but then i blink a few times and it’s over. (This is my opinion)
I just noticed your camp half blood necklace hanging on your bookcase. Nice.
Can u talk about Percy Jackson children and family nominations
the point about the books themselves being imperfect is SO TRUE. i get that the books came first- it’s literally been over a decade since i read the lightning thief for the first time- but to act like they are PERFECT and would be compelling when adapted 1:1 is nuts. the chapters “i play pinochle with a horse” all the way to “i blow up a perfectly good bus” would be SO ANNOYING if they were translated 1:1 on screen bc of how no one actually tells percy anything. also you’d need to give percy an internal monologue for a 1:1 translation to be meaningful, and that’d not only get old FAST, but it would also defeat the purpose of the 3rd person perspective.
on the point about the kids knowing too much, i frankly prefer it. i’m supposed to believe sally told percy stories about greek mythology. annabeth’s been at camp since she was seven. this is the only world grover knows. they SHOULD be able to clock suspicious stuff easily😭 it’s forgivable in TLT because they’re still rookies on their first quest, but it still makes way more sense for them to be able to guess at what they’re walking into.
this was a great video! i love hearing from people who loved the tv show. thank you for sharing 🫡
Lol as a Person who re wrote the Episode 1 script, Ouch lol, But I more so wrote it for fun and I am studying Filmmaking so Screenwriting is my Jam!
IS THAT A CHB JERSEY
@picklemuncher001 yes!
Cast update video??
My hot take having not watched this video all the way through:
Obviously if you’re into accuracy, the show is for you. But if we’re choosing which one is better purely as a viewing experience, the movie is way better.
And blonde Percy seperates him from Harry Potter too.
I DONT think grover shows loyalty in the show because in the first episode he literally snitched on Percy, not something Grover would do in the books
@ hahaha yeah, i forgot about the gaslighting
OMG he's so cute and huge. He's gotten so much bigger ❤
This is like so weird I imagine percy jackson looking like harry potter I don't watch or read hp anymore so I prefer blonde because of that
Me encanta, muy buen video 🙌🙌
