this song is just so amazing! everytime i hear it i think of my grandad who died in 2004, simply because it was his favourite song, so it's now my ultimate favourite song. my uncle sang it at his funeral and i couldn't stop crying. I love you grandad, may you rest in peace now and forever more xxxxxxxxxxx
What a wonderful song. It is so sad and means a lot. The Dubliners were an amazing Band. No one can come up to that standard again. My lovely Mother God rest her and My Father God rest him loved the Dubliners. God rest Ronnie Drew. Proud to be Irish.
Two major famines, and many smaller, struck Ireland in 18th and 19th centuries . . . . The incredible hardship the fine people of Ireland have endured/suffered . . . . This is a wonderful song and performance. Thank you to The Dubliners, And thanks to all who had a hand in recording and making it available here.
I just randomly found this and my old uncle from Ireland born in 1890 with seven brother and seven sisters would sing old Irish songs. He was the kindest man I ever knew, he always had a song or a jig in his step, never complained and he only took a swig of Whiskey or Irish Mist on holiday occasions. I didn't come here knowing I would be holding back tears today. America has become a land of lost souls, we all need to start signing again.
my grandad had this song play at his funeral he was Irish and made me learn all the Irish songs he knew especially this one knew this of by heart at 5 yrs old rip grandad allways in our hearts 💕
Paddy god gave you a voice second to none for "The fields " the perfect lyric's and the lads and audience...I'm an opera lover and 78 yrs.. but you guys are the wonders of Ireland.
I've heard Ronnie Drew sing this on his own, that'll bring out the Rebel in anybody. If ye want to see them, just get the train from Dublin to Galway and you'll pass them..indeed you'll stop at the lovely walled town of Athenry

My Great grandfather came to the U.S. in 1906. From the moment he arrived he was hated for being Irish. My last name should be McGonagall but the guy that processed him through customs couldn't spell it or understand his accent so he wrote "Smith" on every form.... so I could've had a beautiful last name but noooooo.... lol I love Ireland, having Irish blood (mixed German now). With the way my current country is headed, I wonder if Ireland would have me? Haha! God bless.
I'm English and love the Irish, the Dubliners, their music and this song, but I would not trade musical lyrics for human kindness. History is what it is and no-one can change it. We of the present generation can move forward and hopefully with a love of humanity.
British parliamentary system, Irish freedom tearjerkers, Ukrainian spunk and Democracies' weaponry will beat Moscow and Beijing authoritarian abominations.
What a classic will never forget these songs teaching my 3 year old granddaughter these songs she will grow up listening to them too. Loves them having a dance to in the kitchen now. Thanks for the memories .
the strong, resilient Irish people have gone through much in their history, 800 or more years of oppression by the Normans and the English but they always have a song to sing and see so much love in music. The Irish people took such awful conditions and made so much beauty of it. Greatest musicians, poets, authors of our age all of them Irish TIOCFAIDH AR LA!!!
Such a beautiful song. Pity some folk have such harsh comments on it sometimes. Obviously it has been adopted by others for different reasons and relates to folk In different ways. But It's a true heartfelt song with such a beautiful melody. Im Scottish so have Celtic routes along with the Irish folks. Wish everyone could just appreciate it as it was written.
+WFH WTEDG yes I do agree with you. I'm far flung so I look through rose tinted glasses. But I also do understand the problems the Irish folk had. My great gran was one of those that lived through the terrible times.
+WFH WTEDG yep I get you on that aspect. Unfortunately there is always going to be nimrods that chant these things. Through pure ignorance . Brought up with no knowledge or understanding of what they are actually saying. Away from football I still love love this song. Alejandro, I am Italian and this song gets me every time. For different reasons I have had a DNA test done, and it turned up I am 20% Irish/Scottish. Maybe you should have a DNA test as well! In any case is a beautiful song, only a rock would not be moved by it!!
There are no words to express what Paddy Reilly's singing of this most compelling of songs. I feel a sadness that reminds me of the poem that says "and resembles sorrow as the mist resembles the rain" .
I've just discovered I'm one quarter Irish !! A quarter is better than nothing ! Couldn't be more proud. Now I know why I've loved Irish music all my life !!!

@@Brickcellent are you dense, the legacy of British imperialism still stains Ireland. Just look at the North a small group of settler-colonial invaders maintain control of everything, despite being massively corrupt and bigoted. Also the famine is one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever undertook, two generations of normalised relations between the two countries does not make up for that.
I'm not "making up" for it nor "normalizing" it, you utter buffoon. Tell me what use it is begrudging English people who never had anything to do any of that? Blame the British government if you must, not the common man. The belligerent tribalism you exhibit is the reason places like Africa are total shitholes.
@@Brickcellent first of all normalised is a diplomatic term so that was not an assertion against your character. Second as a socialist I have nothing against the British Proletariat but I don't thinl there should be any forgiveness for British aristocratic and bourgeois class interests that occupied, stole and exploited both the land and the people of Ireland. Secondly your assertion that Africa is bad because of tribalism does not hold up to water. The problems Africa faces today from a combination of four things, an incredibly violent and exploitative colonial period, a poorly planned and poorly executed process of decolonisation (cut and run) , the cold war hysteria causing the US to sponsor coups against anyone that either wanted communism or just simple self-sufficiency (Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso) for the former, Patrice Lummumba (Democratic Republic of Congo) for the latter) and the neoliberal consensus being enforced upon countries that have no industrial base of production and does not allow these nations to address the huge amounts of capital and utilities still in the hands of the former imperialists.
***** There were not millions of Aborigines, the land could not have supported their life style. Estimates put the population between 300,000 and 800,000 and the population now is around 400,000. The Aborigines were hunter gatherers with nothing organised above the tribal level. These people moved into Australia about 40,000 years ago it is believed.
The clue is in the word you used " transported". Nor emigrated or immigrated, but "transported" . They had their hearts and guts torn out by Westminster Lords and rich MPs. Their families were ripped apart, their hearts and lives were ripped apart and they went on to bring destruction to the native people of that land. I see nothing to be proud about in heartbreak and destruction.
@deosullivan3 Paddy Reilly is the the singer on this. The song is from 2002, their 40th reunion. Hope Paddy and Jim will be joining the group in 2012 for the 50th reunion. (All of us are too young to be remembering how long they have been together!)

BEST GREETINGS FROM Finland All best to you
A large number of Irish, English and Scottish were transported to Australia and became the backbone of the country
Howard Phillips .
AMAZING!!!...I love this song...
I am German,but i love Ireland!!!!
@deosullivan3
Paddy Reilly is the the singer on this. The song is from 2002, their 40th reunion. Hope Paddy and Jim will be joining the group in 2012 for the 50th reunion. (All of us are too young to be remembering how long they have been together!)
Wonderful
