You Yanks are missing out on the Mazda 2 turbo diesel. Superb little car. Not powerful at 105bhp but 250Nm of torque gets you past thing really quickly on highways and freeways. Light and nimble, it drives really well. The fuel economy is awesome. In town I get 53 mpg (US), on the freeway at 75 mph I get 58 mpg. On highways I get 71 mpg. The 11.6 US gal tank gets me 700 miles for $52. The car cost $18,000. Only one problem in 7 yrs, an O2 sensor failed and was fixed for free outside of warranty.
The reason we are”missing out” on the Mazda 2 is that it would be a death trap on American roads. It’s a tiny car and dwarfed by the average car on the road here. Also, we can thank EPA CAFE regulations for not having most of the models and configurations of cars sold in Australia, the Middle East and parts of Europe that we can’t get. @@csjrogerson2377 There are almost NO cars the size of the Mazda 2 on the road in the US anymore. For good reason, too. Perhaps you might be fine driving down the overcrowded interstate going 80mph (133km/h) with massive trucks, SUVs, and 18 wheelers flying by going 85-95mph - but most Americans are not fine with that. That's why there are a pitifully small number of those small vehicles you mentioned sold in America today. Yes, there are massive road trains in parts of Australia and quite a few Land Cruisers or Patrols, but the majority of vehicles in Australia are much smaller on average than in the US and the speed limits and actual speeds travelled are MUCH slower than here. 20 years of experience living and driving in Australia is why I know.
My favorite brand as well; I've owned six over the years, two currently. Thanks for this very fair and honest assessment of the brand. They're not perfect cars, for sure, but the combination of driving dynamics, style, interior quality and comfort, and price is truly unique. I worry, though, that Mazda's choices to lag behind in offering hybrid-electric technology and to deemphasize electronic features and infotainment will come to haunt the company and threaten its future, since almost every other manufacturer is going the opposite direction.
There are no perfect cars out there anyway. Not even Toyota or Honda which I have owned and still owe Overall Mazda is still up there with the other popular Japanese brands. It is unique because it offers buyers what the others would not
The "chirp" sound when shifting gears is due to a faulty torque converter. Mazda recently issued TSB 05-005/23 on 10/31/23 that addresses the issue. I recently had my torque converter replaced. "Chirp" is gone.
No car should be sold with faulty torque converter. Mine is 27 years old and still running great...with transmission fluid I never replaced. There are good cars, and there is cheap crap.
They always had A/C issues for some reason. Had a 2005 Mazda 6 wagon which we would still be driving if someone would have stopped at a red light instead of broadsiding us. Few problem but the A/C. Dealer never fixed it, finally a A/C expert got it going but never worked totally right.
Cx-9 owner here. It’s the best 7 seater in its class - drives the best, comfort, nice interiors and looking great. The recent generation gives a boost in terms of appearances. The only complaints about Mazda is it’s space but that’s how it sacrifice for drivability ( engine mounting at rear of engine room) and beauty ( car proportions)
BUT. as you can see, most of the problems or actually ALL of the problems were when Mazda was partnered with ford. Now Mazda is Mazda, reliability at its best!! I had a 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with 120k miles and not a single issue. Now I bought a 2023 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature and I am so happy.
Great video. I have a 2020 mazda3! 2ltr mild hybred skyactive g! It's a little underpowered but I love this car ! It looks fantastic and is so cheap to own, with a luxury feel even though I previously owned lexus rc300h coupe which was amazing but not practical. So yeah I love the mazda.
Great review. Ive owned three, 2 manual protege sedans and a 2014 Mazda 6 with the awesome 6 speed auto. Loved them all, just something about the handling and ride that makes you feel alive...connected to the car. They arent perfect, no car is...but they are close.
YESSS!! ME EFFIN' TOO. Got my CX-30 Turbo, and now I'm making slow-but-steady moves towards getting an ND! A top notch brand loyalist 2-car garage if you ask me. A good FD seems almost unattainable to me. But NDs are right next door.
I have a 14 Mazda 3 sport. This car us awesome. I drive for Lyft, I've put on 70k in a year. One thing, make sure you use quality parts!! And GDI engines will require a port engine cleaning due to carbon build up on the valves
The best purchase that I have made was a Mazda this past year. I did my homework. I was planning on a Toyota, Honda, Lexus or Subaru. The Mazda just offered more (in terms of HP, torque and premium quality)...for slightly less. I've never felt the "value" in other car purchases as I have felt with my new Mazda. Plus, it is VERY fun to drive. I didn't buy the CX-5 (I bought a CX-30). However, I would consider any Mazda going forward.
2025 cx50 owner. I absolutely love it. Great in snow great handling on road. Id prefer a manual option as i like manual transmission driveabilty but overall its great all around for the price. I paid 31k otd 2.9% 10yr/150k mile B2B Warranty. I feel pretty good about the deal i got. Psid like 10% under msrp and talked them into a super long Warranty. 💪
6:45 - Just an FYI that no fuel induction/injector service by Mazda will clean the back of the valves, which is where the carbon deposits are in a DI engine. The typical DIY process is to blast them with walnut shells, but asking a dealer if they offer that service will only get you a blank stare, because they're only trained to offer those that give them the best profit margins with the least effort. In other words, a bottle of injector cleaner added to the tank for $120+. The _actual_ problem will remain and get worse.
I have had a Cosmo, original RX7, Mazda5, and the 2017 Mazda3. The 3 was great but, as you mentioned, interior trim wearing out, delicate paint, plus a costly iridium spark plug replacement due to misfire. The paint issue is solved with clear film protectant. The steering wheel leather wore out but sold the car before replacing. All in all, one of the best cars for the money even with its quirks.
I have a 2015 manual Mazda 6 with 175K miles and I love it. Mechanically, it is amazing. I have replaced engine mounts, sway bar, and normal maintenance. The only gripe I have is the interior material quality. The door panel "leather" is pealing off amongst some other materials fading. if Mazda can improve that, I will likely be a Mazda owner for life. Trying to talk my wife into getting a CX-90 now that we have three kids.
The reason they don't sell is they aren't typically class competitive on passenger or cargo space. If they solve that they will be a huge player. Especially if they catch up to Toyota and Honda when it comes to hybrids.
YES--- THIS is what I wanted to see-- a truthful--and factual report on the reliability of the BETTER quality vehicle. The subarus are good- but look and FEEL cheap to me.. I loved the little CROSSTREK- but it's FAR underpowered-- needs a bigger rubber band in it..
Well mate I live in Australia and have owned Mazda cars for a long time now my choice has been from new the 6 Sports Hatchback (a 2009 model traded in for the last of that line a 2011 model) for the last two vehicles and both have been of high quality builds and have served me well - mind you I have had them serviced a very regular basis. After owning these cars I would never buy another brand. My total driving experience has been so enjoyable and really economical.
I agree sometimes the autonomous breaking would drive me nuts, it would scream at me even if nothing or no one is in front. Also, there has been a few paint chips on my vehicle caused by rocks, etc. but I was already expecting that due to our frequent trips to mountains thru old logging roads. They could have made the paint a lot more durable though. But I really love the way my CX-30 handles and what really made me decide on it is that I test drove it last (after the crosstrek and HR-V) and it has the most luxurious and engaging feel on it. I don’t mind the space since I usually drive alone to work within the city or with my partner during our weekend mountain trips in BC either during summer or winter since the awd handles well. Its a perfect lifestyle vehicle for me. I do hope that they bring the hybrid versions here in NA, as they are pretty common in Europe and Asia.
My 21’ 3 sedan had the transmission replaced at 18k miles due do that chirp between 3rd and 4th gear. I’ll be honest, the new transmission behaves so much better than the original. I was told it was a clutch plate issue. I also have had the finicky A/C but that isnt such big deal. With all that, I love my Mazda. The NA 2.5 is great and I just enjoy the way the car feels and handles.
Really wish they'd bring back the base model with a manual transmission. In the mazda, 3 hatchback. And throw back in that manual e break. And I would replace my 2015 for it
Owner of a 2012 Mazda 3 I hatchback auto 175K miles. Never have seen check engine light on. Total repairs to date one engine mount, and sway bar link bolt. Total cost for those two repairs $300. Hard to beat!

I love Mazda. So far we have own since 2007 3 Mazda 3's, 2 Mazda 6's and 3 CX 5'. Never had a recall and no cost either than regular maintenance grant it I normally trade them with relatively low mileage.
@1:30 As an owner of a 2018 Mazda 3 where the paint has all but peeled off my front bumper, hood & side mirrors, I can attest that the paint Mazda uses was still trash in 2018. It seems to be their Sonic Silver Metallic Paint because almost all silver Mazdas I've seen from about 2016 to 2019 have chipped paint.
Also @2:01, I replaced my brakes with Brembo pads & rotors because the OEM Mazda brakes needed service every 8-10 months and I was told by the technician at my Mazda Service Center that the brakes on the Mazda 3 were trash.
Mazda CX-30 owner here. Car is 2020 model year, paint is soul red crystal. The paint is chipping, steering wheel leather is peeling, only 29k miles on it. I don't know what to think about Mazda anymore.

@@cormaro13 I hear you, mine isn't ceramic coated so that is why it gets chips from stones on the road. I wash it at home very carefully, so I'm not an idiot who run the car through the automatic wash. Also, my previous car, the 2011 BMW 1 series which I had for 9 years got a few chips but nothing serious. The steering wheel leather on BMW is much higher quality than on the Mazda and never peeled after 87k miles. The dealer told me that minority of CX-30s have problems with steering wheel peeling so I'm getting a warranty replacement.
I think the engine and transmission are some of the most solid on the market. I would like to see how many are actually being replaced based on your reference.
Really like my 2012 Mazda 3. Appreciate the many little design decisions that their engineers make. Would love a new one, but can't justify it. Don't drive enough.
I'm not an SUV person and lease a 6. Disappointed that it's no longer available in the US. I will be forced to an alternate brand when it expires since I'm too tall to drive a 3 comfortably.
In this class, if you are bent on technology, hands down, the Kia Sportage is your baby. You also get a few more goodies for the dollar spent. Everything he says here about the competition vs Mazda in general is pretty accurate. Since the CX5 wasn’t going to be our primary vehicle and we own a larger SUV, we chose it for the fun of the more personal driving experience and the way it “separates itself” from the pack.
A friend is a professional auto reviewer. When I needed a new commuter he kept telling me to look at Mazda. His comment to me was that, "We tell everyone to buy Mazdas, they buy Hondas and Toyotas. It's puzzling." I wound up with a Mazda3 sedan Turbo. Love that little torque monster.
@@vindictiv6880 what? im saying buying brand new toyota or honda is cheaper than mazda and has a better resale value. I compared Honda, Toyota and mazda in 2022 and mazda comes out a bit more expensive than toyota and honda. Primarily because of AWD. not sure about 2023 or 2024 tho.
@@ThePencilPusher you have to compare apples and apples. For example, the RAV4 base trim of Toyota is 1k more expensive than the cx-5 base trim. If you look at the HRV from Honda, it's a worse cx5 in every way beside pricing. A more fair comparison is with the HRV and the HRV is 3k more expensive (base trim vs base trim). Now, if you increase trim to get a stronger engine (ex: turbo CX5 vs hybrid RAV4), the price difference increases even more in favor of the cx-5. Same for the Cx-50 but to a lesser extent. Then to that, add how Mazda has been offering a much better interest rate which was 3.9% for 6 years and is now 5.9 vs 7.29% for 6 years at Honda or 6.89% for 6 years at Toyota. Also, you are correct that some model don't offer AWD, that's the case for the CRV which is ironically more expensive than base model cx5 but also is only 2wd. Plus, honda and toyota's don't have leather/premium looking interiors, even at higher trims, unlike mazda.
The cx-30 has a good amount of everything. Handling, power, luxury, reliability, appearance, value. It's for practical drivers who still want to have a little fun and a little luxury. But they should've put heated mirrors. My mirrors are always foggy.
The 2004-2009 Mazda3s have a common issue with ABS module failures. Sometimes they can fail without illuminating an ESP or ABS light. Make sure the ABS works normally without the pedal falling during the cycling before you buy. Also double check that all the trouble lights function when you first turn the key. This is an expensive repair and is easy to miss during a test drive.
The biggest selling point for me is the CX-5 has an automatic transmission, NOT a CVT. Long term reliability and life expectancy of CVT’s in general are nowhere near AT’s, and require fluid changes very frequently as metal fines constantly wear off the belts causing premature failures. I wish they still offered a manual transmission.
You forget the era when Ford had a controlling stake in mazda where mazda released piles upon piles with Ford parts. The old generation that can afford new cars haven't forgotten. and mazdas usually more expensive than Toyota and Honda for reasons that customers don't care to pay for.
I talked about some of them, though the focus was on stuff from the last 10-15 years as that reflects more on what the brand is now. They aren’t expensive to fix, at least not anymore than most stuff these days.

I just bought a 2024 cx5 signature and traded my 2018 Mazda 6 signature. The 6 for me was close to perfection, I live down a very bad dirt road, 5 miles of it. After 4 years not one rattle or front end issue...I like it much more the cx5 but wanted an AWD and got a very good trade. If the 6 ever come back I will want to trade for it. I will say I don't like the seats, even though they are Napa leather and find toyota and subaru seats much more comfortable. But if one likes driving the others don't come close in driving dynamics...So disappointing in hearing you talk about all the issues, seats and paint I understand but difficult for to believe some of the other stuff I heard, my 6 was fantastic and i thin i will regret getting the cx5 and dumping my 2018 signature but I will say the Mazda did improve on the seats in the signature.
The fact that they don't use a CVT and they still put a manual transmission in one of the Mazda 3 trims it's part of the reason why I'm looking at them as opposed to Honda or Toyota I hate CVTs. It's a source of stress I know even if I take care of it it's going to eventually go out and then I'm out thousands of dollars. I love the interiors so far I can see what you mean about the back seat but with small kids it's not an issue.
Would have been nice for them to have kept the Mazda 6. Otherwise I like most of what they offer now. Will definitely consider one again the next time around.
@@Realistick I have the auto RF 2020, which I purchased 3 months ago at 3500 miles, and it is fantastic. It has a "turbo" Sport button to give more acceleration if you need it. Shouldn't use it all the time as it uses more gas then. It has paddle shifters if want to try manual shifting. I often have stop and go traffic on side streets and can't imagine using a manual all the time. It was tough enough when I rode motorcycles for 8 years. Also if you need to accelerate quickly just put the pedal to the floor and it will immediately down shift and boy it does take off quick. Reddit is full of people that are fully against the automatic but you have to think: what are my chances of shifting as quick as those SUV's who can just floor it on the highway. If it is a second weekend car on low traffic twisties then fine but for real world auto is the way to go. Also not more for oil changes / tire rotations than any other car. Great car.

Leaking ball joints at 30,000 miles for my 2021 Mazda 6. Don't know if you've seen or heard of that being a common issue. Mazda is covering it because the car is still under warranty. I am hoping this is a one off but if it isn't, I'll be switching to something else.
Eh I have the CX 5 2014 AWD 2,5l and I'm starting to replace some parts at 140 000 km but at least the parts are cheap and easy to replace yourself. I just replaced my self 2 rear wheels bering and it cost me only $170 CA ans the serpentine belt for 20$. Try this with a Mercedes
If this is your favorite brand, I'd hate to hear your rant on the other brands. If I listened to this before I bought my 2023 Mazda 3 preferred Platinum Quartz sedan, I probably wouldn't. Only having 162 miles on it, I have no issues this early on. I just hope I don't after listening, to your video. The only reason I bought this car is because Ford stop making the Focus in this country , I traded in my 20 yo Focus for this car, I am expecting the same kind of reliability with this car but I guess I*m being too optimistic,
I tried reiterating this in the video but every brand will encounter some flaws, most mazda owners don't run into big problems. The 3 is probably the second most reliable car in the class behind the Corolla. I'll make a similar video on toyota and honda someday when I review enough of them.

It is unique because it offers buyers what the others would not
They couldn't have been that good if you went through 6 of them.
@@samkitty5894You haven't replaced your transmission fluid yet?!
I've got Mazda 3 hatch touring 2015. Always got AC problem. But we love the car so much!
They always had A/C issues for some reason. Had a 2005 Mazda 6 wagon which we would still be driving if someone would have stopped at a red light instead of broadsiding us. Few problem but the A/C. Dealer never fixed it, finally a A/C expert got it going but never worked totally right.
Simply OUTSTANDING Mazda review and specs as well as pricing details. 😊You, sir, help a LOT of people. Me being one of them, certainly!
I like how they include cupholders on their engine covers

I have a 2018 CX5, I have never had any problem with the cylinder deactivation of my non turbo 2.5 liter Mazda engine.

Loving the Soul Red co-host. Those sidewalls! 🤩
Define “best”.
Such a well researched and extremely helpful for someone deciding if mazda is good for them.
Great, balanced, insights on the Mazda brand. One of my favorite automobile manufacturers
Same here, I’m excited to see what they do next!
@@RealistickWhat are your thoughts on the new 2024 Hyundai Kona limited?
I think it's going to give Mazda some competition.
BUT. as you can see, most of the problems or actually ALL of the problems were when Mazda was partnered with ford.
Brilliant! Appreciated your in depth research on Mazda!
Had the chirp in the transmission. Bought cert preowned 2018 cx5, went at like 40k. Got the extended warranty, paid for itself that day
One reason. They don’t use stupid cvt
2 reasons actually: they got the f*ck away from FORD

I was between a CX-30 and a CX-50! CX-50 had more space for my 2 kids, so I went with it. Easily my favorite car purchase in 20 years of car buying!
I am a Toyota fan but I do appreciate what Mazda has been and is doing. Well done!

Got my first Mazda a couple weeks ago. CX-5 Grand Touring. I absolutely love it!
Just don't tour with it.
Thank you for mentioning your height in other video!
Being a tall person was concerned about leg and head room.
How expensive was it to replace your iridium spark plugs?? I did it myself a few years ago and I think I paid about $10 each for the plugs.
I think I agree with your comments.. Good job !
Love naturally asperated engines and traditional (non cvt) auto transmission. Easily swopped entertaiment system etc. Great under the radar brand.
Autonomous breaking is never a good thing. Autonomous braking might be a good thing.
Nice. It is a clutch in the torque converter. So all it needs is a new torque converter and flush the old fluid and good as new.
the tiny gas tank on the cx-30 is also a problem... even one additional gallon would help
I agree with this wholeheartedly
Literally the only thing holding me back from getting one. Going with a CX5 probably
Our first Mazda was a 1968 1500 and we've driven Mazdas ever since. The best Mazdas were from the late 60's to the early 90's IMO. Great brand.

Really wish they'd bring back the base model with a manual transmission. In the mazda, 3 hatchback. And throw back in that manual e break. And I would replace my 2015 for it
The mazda 3 still has a manual, if u stop being so cheap you can afford it lol
I just got the CX-9 and I love it.
Owner of a 2012 Mazda 3 I hatchback auto 175K miles. Never have seen check engine light on. Total repairs to date one engine mount, and sway bar link bolt. Total cost for those two repairs $300. Hard to beat!
I have the CX5/2014 and I didn’t have any issue so far . I agree with you that the Mazda grip the road better than Toyota when turning . I’m thinking about getting the new CX5 this year . Thank you for the video !

- 3.3 I6 diesel, enabling the SUV CX-60 for hypermiling 60+ MPG (really, you can look up videos)

It's unfortunate because the silver paint was actually very beautiful when I purchased the car.
@bogdanpanovic9518 mazds cx30 owner here , 2022 model , maybe you don't know how to take care of your car , did u think about that ? Lol
I haven't experienced paint chips yet and I'm at 40k mileage but again some of us take care of our cars and don't run it thru the automatic carwash like a idiot lol mine is also ceramic coated inside and out
Again you people need to learn how to take care of your stuff lol
Absolutely super reliable and no doubt about it 👉💯
I agree with you on the TECH- no one wants all that HUGE screen of crap sticking up there ruining the look- it's NOT NEEDED...
Really like my 2012 Mazda 3. Appreciate the many little design decisions that their engineers make. Would love a new one, but can't justify it. Don't drive enough.
I would be in line to buy a truck if Mazda would build one!
They do still make them. The BT50 is available in Australia.
Preaching truth out here 🙌
A friend is a professional auto reviewer. When I needed a new commuter he kept telling me to look at Mazda. His comment to me was that, "We tell everyone to buy Mazdas, they buy Hondas and Toyotas. It's puzzling." I wound up with a Mazda3 sedan Turbo. Love that little torque monster.
Why most people buy Toyota and Honda even though Mazda also offer superior products ? it is the risky avert, herd mentality attitude of most people
@@ohcanadaeh some stuff people care about: fuel consumption is better on toyota and honda, better resale value, and its cheaper. (at least in canada)
@@ThePencilPushercan't be cheaper AND have higher resell value than mazda. It's actually Mazda that is cheaper.
I followed you from Zack's channel. Nice content. You know your stuff. I fucks witcha. 👍🏿
Great to hear! Thank you
Have 22 MX5 RF and a 23 CX9. No problems yet with either.
The SOUL RED is beautiful………. So beautiful…… yes needs clear protection.
My fav brand too. They should come up with a sub luxury brand to compete with cash cows like Lexus and Infinity and shake the market.
Love my cx5 it’s Lexus quite inside, the skyactive mazdas are completely different
Thank you‼️🏁
You forget the era when Ford had a controlling stake in mazda where mazda released piles upon piles with Ford parts.

Great car.

Mazda is way more popular than Honda in Australia. I'd get one myself if I didn't hate thier black interiors so much. Black on Black inside probably contributes to the feeling of darkness and claustrophobia you mentioned
Mazda rules!
Leaking ball joints at 30,000 miles for my 2021 Mazda 6. Don't know if you've seen or heard of that being a common issue. Mazda is covering it because the car is still under warranty. I'm a lifelong Toyota guy and decided to switch to Mazda with this car. Although I love the way it handles and is designed, reliability is key for me.
I've heard there have been serious engine issues with the skyactive models?
