- Miljenko "Mili" Matijevic talks about Steelheart’s path to success and how it all came literally crashing down
Though Steelheart was considered a new band when its self-titled release came out in 1990, the nucleus of the band had been together for nearly a decade. As Red Alert, the band spent most of the ‘80s honing songwriting skills and recording demos in Connecticut while playing occasional shows in a state that didn’t offer a lot of opportunities for a hard rock band. With a plane ticket and 4-song demo cassette in hand, the band, now called Steelheart, scored a record deal almost immediately after relocating to Los Angeles and within a year of moving to the West Coast, Steelheart was topping charts with “I’ll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)” which showcased Milijenko Matijevic’s soaring and glass-shattering vocals. With a modest level of success, the age old question of, “What would have happened had Steelheart moved to L.A. five years earlier?” is one that Matijevic has considered but knows he’s powerless to answer. After playing 50 shows in support of 1992’s Tangled in Reins, Steelheart played a Halloween gig opening for Slaughter. Matijevic attempted to climb a lighting truss only to discover it had not been properly secured. The 1,000 pound truss fell on Matijevic breaking his nose, cheekbone and jaw and, subsequently, led to Steelheart’s breakup as Matijevic was in the hospital and rehab for a considerable amount of time. With a new lineup in tow, Matijevic has carried on the Steelheart name and released Wait (1996), Good 2B Alive (2008) and Through Worlds of Stardust (2017) while playing gigs whenever he can. The singer also provided the vocals for Mark Wahlberg’s character in the 2001 film Rock Star which featured Steelheart’s “We All Die Young”. In 2022, Matijevic released the single “Trust in Love” in multiple languages in support of global peace and hopes that the song becomes an anthem for those who need hope in their lives.

Mili is amazing. And easily if Steelheart had been on the airwaves in 1986, they would have been a household name. No doubt. But as Mili said, life happens. Us loyal SH fans appreciate them so much and love them
This is 100% true, even if that Album came out in '87, Steelheart would have been huge. As is, no matter where we played that CD, everyone just loved it. Still one of the best sounding albums, those drums are killer.
They should have been way bigger than they were. They were one of the most talented Metal bands to come out of the 80's. Miljenko's voice was heads above the rest. I loved and still love Steelheart's music. Miljenko is one of the coolest most humble vocalists I've ever witnessed.
What a legend and great human being! One of the best voices ever heard.
😊
To this day, I consider 1990 and 1991/92 hardrock as "the 80s". Steelheart, Firehouse Don't Treat Me Bad, even Skid Row's Monkey Business and Slave to the Grind, Damn Yankees. All that is 80s to me.
I remember hearing this song , I was 16 and mesmerized. His voice is one that gives me chills and brings me to another place, still!
I was a metal junkie. Loved hair metal and all things rock...and NEVER heard of this band! Back then... I'm stumped how I never heard them..until the past year or so.. I feel gyped.
He's got one of the greatest vocals ever !!!!! 💗👍
If anyone deserves greatness and luck. It's this guy.. despite the ups and downs. He's proof you never give up
Mili is best hard rock vocalist of all time! No contest!
Chris Risola was my roomate for almost 3 years, after the band was done (at least the original iteration) , And I always told Chris that Steelheart was just late to the party, with the talent they could have been as big as any band...Chris was and is one of the coolest guys I have ever met.
I remember when Angel Eyes came out. A girl I worked with handed me tape. She said you have to listen to this. I was hooked. Went down and bought it that day
What a lovely man , and the best voice EVER ❤
I 💘 Milli so much his voice is amazing I'm so glad he made a complete recovery from his horrible accident
Matijevic has the best voice I've ever heard; well maybe Robert Plant can match him. I've listened to "She's Gone" numerous times but never knew the backstory. I've just discovered the name and sad history of this extraordinary talent.
Freaking A & R guys lol, they are like critics. Good for Mili telling him to F Off! Good for him, they didn't need to take shit from anyone. Love how his father said "Do It, dont talk about it!" that is fatherly advice 👍.
So glad to hear that he's doing 👍!! Can't keep a talented man down. Good luck on your journey, MM !! Always a fan from Texas! 💗
One of the all time greatest rock vocalist ever!
The difference in the aftermath of Mili's accident and Rick Allen's saddens me. And yet Mili came through even without support.
I have loads of respect for Mili. Been a huge fan since I first heard Steelheart many years ago.
I’d love if he did a show where he mentors like 5-10 guys to compete in singing competitions. I’d watch that in a Steel “heart-beat”😉
Frank and John were in the band named Rage of Angels.
One of the best bands I have ever seen live.. Millis vocals were spot on! But I missed on of the tequila bottles because I got some of it in my eyes, by the time I got it out and looked up.. the person behind me grabbed it! 😡 but it is, what it is.
It sucks to be so tight with people you think are friends only to have something life threatening happen to you and they are nowhere to be found. That's so depressing and hurts like a knife to ur heart! God bless you Milijenko!
you went to that dark place we all have. You really needed some light
Mili and the band should have been way bigger! It’s one of those things wrong place, wrong time! In saying that still made some waves in those days
just means the true diehards are an exclusive fan base...we in it forever
Mili...Your voice is above the rest and I hope you continue to entertain. I'm so sorry for all the pain you endured but your fans Love you and really want more of your music, if you able...I will be watching for it 🤩
Excelente músico excelente vocalista 👍👏
I've been into K-pop and adjacent media for around a decade now, and I can confirm that "She's Gone" is _wildly_ popular over there. Many K-pop idols and TV celebs have sung it, with the best rendition probably by Lee Hyuk (formerly) from a K-rock duo called Norazo.
I'd like to know when he changed his name from Mike to Miljenko.
One of the best! Wish I would have gotten to know you better. You're a great person. A Nebraska girl.
Rage of Angels was the band he stole Frank from..they were a Christian Rock Band
Two groups that came out of Ct. that were actually pretty famous were The Five Satins and The Carpenters. They both came out of New Haven.
I am from Branford which is only about a few miles from New Haven.
LOVE ME SOME MILI STEEL HEART💋💋💋💜💜💜🤘🤘🤘👅👅👅🤪🤪😛😛😊😊🌊🌊🥰
Warner Brothers and their "Development Deals" back in the 80 - 90's lol. I feel him.

Loved the movie Rockstar! The second I heard the vocals I knew it was Mili. I was so happy that he was making music again. Missed that voice of his.

His voice is always singing through my house on Alexa! Mili is amazing! 30 plus years & that voice still hits me! ❤️🤘🏼
Goes to show you sometimes its better to be lucky then good. I mean Poison, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot etc. Were not better hyst hit in the right year.
