I had something like this happen to me last week. I charge $35 to cut someone yard and it took my crew 12 minutes to do it and they were pissed we were done so fast. I told him I have a crew and equipment that makes the job faster but I have to pay for those things.
I had to explain this to aliens two weeks ago. I told her $40/week. I have to push mow because her gate is too small for my 60" and I can't afford a 34"stander right now. She said, "my last guy charged $40 bi-weekly." I asked if he had a truck, trailer full of equipment and 3 guys and done in 15 minutes. She said yes. I told her he was probably paying those guys $15/ hour and driving between $30-50k worth of equipment. He was making anything off your yard and most likely why he ignored your calls. He out grew your type of yard. She understood, pays me $40/week and my son and i finish in 45 minutes. People don't get the whole equipment cost, insurance cost, help cost and of course, Uncle Sam in your pockets.
I cut a 1/2 acre yard for a 90 year old woman named Myra Coarsemeyer. She paid me $2.00. She said it was all she could afford. So, I didn't argue with her. She died at age 99 and left $1 Million to her niece and nephew who only barely knew of her. Lesson Learned.
@abbaby68 You don't fully know her story, their children could as well completely ignore her mom and only show for christmas, all you need to know is your actions were for a good cause, and if you needed the money, you shouldn't have given it out, even if the other party looks like it need more than you.

Never offer or agree to do extra freebies until after you've done precisely what you've bid to do and been paid. Many people lose respect for you if you do extras.
theviet hey don’t mind me asking but what does that mean I wanna get into landscaping it’s sounds like something I would love to do I’ve done a couple times with my uncle can you please elaborate.
Also, that client doesn't realize he's paying for your knowledge of how to do the work, not just the work itself. Like when you take your car for service and it's fixed in a half hour, but he charges you like 800 dollars. You pay for the knowledge of the person doing the work, not just the work itself.
As a contractor I think you kept your cool pretty well. I have had a few customers I have absolutely lost my mind at and called every name in the book. It is 100% correct that the reason people get pissed off is if they think you didn't take enough time, even if you do the work to the same standard you would if you took ten times the time.

It's these types that make being self employed a total headache some days, and there seems to be more and more of them that want to roll the dice and see how much they can knock off the price that THEY AGREED TO IN THE FIRST PLACE. SICKENING!
The extra work you did was worth the money alone. People like this man refusing to pay for these gentleman’s hard work is the reason why I’ve lost faith in humanity.
I hate people who do not wanna pay. They do not understand, contractors know the faster the job gets done, the more money they make, Capitalism at it's best. No Greed, just Professionalism. He should ask, how long will job take. No shame in jail if it is for a good reason.

Damn. Some elders forget inflation and think we still live in the past when car shops charged $20per hour unlike today at $90 per hour. My father has been doing masonry for 50 years and myself 20 years now. We can't get the prices back up from where they were in the 90s bc of the inflows of cheap under the table workers. A lot of the GCs and builders just won't pay with the times but some do but majority rules. So you can just imagine what some customers and GCs think when they compare our bids with others who don't pay taxes, work without General liability and Comp and get paid nothing bc their inexperienced. Hell we can't even afford medical to our employees imagine that cost added. So many are going out of business too just go to equipment repair shops and you'll find equipment with unpaid repair bills. We will never lower our prices to compete with the cheaters just can't or we are out of business with broken down equipment and bald tires. We need to get our licenses and permits back. Why some require license and other professions don't I don't know. I can't understand it. So many masonry jobs done incorrectly.
some of these old timers still live in 60’s! That’s why when my dad asks about how much I paid for stuff, I tell him 1/4 of what I paid just to avoid him calling me stupid!
First rule, MAKE THE CUSTOMER FEEL HE'S GETTING WHAT HE PAID FOR, NEVER! rush a job, or make it look too easy, if you are self employed or expecting payment the customer will feel both the workmanship and materials used were substandard and that he was ripped off and overpaid for a job that he was led to believe was of more substance. I learnt that first week on the Job.
I,m in the UK and I wouldn't of accepted a cheque off a guy like him. He could have cancelled it before you cashed it. I would have insisted on cash or bank transfer. But well done for standing up to the guy. To many arseholes in the world who don't wanna pay for a job well done.

Thank you for this video. We literally had this exact thing happen this week. The customer signed a contract and now is saying we’re making too much money for 10 hours of work. Apparently it’s our fault we are efficient and work hard. Thank you again
This is why I always come out and meet the homeowner before I even send a quote. If I get a bad vibe, I don’t even send out the quote. It’s not easy being a contractor.
I just love this video. When I’m in the mood for a good laugh I’ll bring this one up time and again. The interaction between you and the customer, priceless. Customer said it best...”I fucked up” when he had the contract read to him. You say exactly what you want to say, and what ALOT of want to say, not only to the camera, but to the customer. A job life cycle, quote, contract, 1/2 payment, work completed, 2nd 1/2 and final payment...move onto the next job.
Doing extra work might make the difference between customer hiring you again and spreading the word about your job or going for someone else. From what I see, only people who really enjoy their job does those extra, those are the guys you should be looking for and re-hiring when needed, even if they're a little bit more expensive.
@@baluranha agreed, somewhat. If you do the original project with excellence you won't have to do extras, only when your heart desires it.. Cause when business picks up and word of mouth is inevitable, you will not be able to do extras without charging more, then customers will see that you are not doing as much for the money and eventually will hire somebody else. Customer service is number one, but doesn't mean work more. Be more personable. That will get you further.
@@adammanning1805 very well said sir. It's a hard line to draw between being more personable and doing extra work as the gentleman said above. Its a hard knock life eh? That's why god made beer. This reminds me of a story from decades ago when my teenage brother and his best friend asked an old curmudgeon neighbor of ours if he wanted his driveway cleared of snow after a big storm. He said yes and the they proceeded to use my father's snow blower to do the job. When they went to get paid, the neighbor told them he thought they were going to shovel it by hand (a job that would've taken hours) and then he refused to pay them because they completed the job in a lot less time than he anticipated. After arguing with him for a bit, they finally relented. Then they proceded to blow all of the snow back into his driveway while he stood in his house and helplessly (and angrily) watched them do it.

The same thing would happen to me being a auto technician, I was good and quick, if I got a 10 Hr job done in 6, they thought that 6 was all they would pay.
Two things I learned watching this. 1) Don’t give extras beyond the contract. If you are going to remove and add something make it a substitution and have them initial the change. 2) Take before and after pictures or video from every job

They're called K A R E N S and D A R E N S.
The client was probably justifying it by saying “ you over quoted me” charged me a whole day for a half days work. Dumb assholes always find shit to bitch about
Mechanic's lien on his house, and a police report for theft of services.
Just stole his pen had me rolling
Some people will never be satisfied. He was mad that professionals came and did what he couldn't.
She paid me
$2.00. She said it was all she could afford. So, I didn't argue with her. She died at age
99 and left $1 Million to her niece and nephew who only barely knew of her. Lesson Learned.
@abbaby68 You don't fully know her story, their children could as well completely ignore her mom and only show for christmas, all you need to know is your actions were for a good cause, and if you needed the money, you shouldn't have given it out, even if the other party looks like it need more than you.
@@baluranha This is easily the best, most intelligent, response I have read out of all of these comments. It shows that your ethics and morals are above reproach.

Just picked up a new customer that tells me she wasn’t happy about the other guys, “they showed up, zoom zoom and were gone, to fast!” No complaints about the quality work done, just to fast. Definitely sent me a red flag!
Tell her it’s probably best not to do business because it’s a red flag she’d complain that they were efficient and quick. People usually complain about them being slow
Older people are used to depression days when a kid would paint your whole house for $40
Or mow the lawn all summer for $6
When I use to take my dad out to a restaurant to eat... when he was alive..... He would leave a 25 cent tip thinking that was big time. I'd always go back and hand the waiter/waitress cash. He never forgot about how hard the depression era was
Ive gotten older and sometimes i cant understand the new prices for things. Its very common.
Lmao true
There aren't any "depression day" old folks around much anymore.
@@barb8335 - sounds like my wifes mom. My wife told me her mom would take her adult kids (6) out to a restaurant get a $70-80 dollar check and leave a $3-5 dollar tip. One of them would always go back and leave the correct tip. Lol
Thank you! Sometimes you think you're the only one fighting those battles!
No doubt!
You showed us more you did for free then what he paid for just shows your a man proud of your work

Best video i've seen in a long time! Good for you! I deal with customers all day at my job and I can tell you from experience that "the customer is always right" is total BULLS**T!! Some are just flat out rude, stupid, or both! Glad you had a contract!
I spent 18 years as an automotive technician, the customer can't do my job, so the customer is always WRONG
I do have a contract with terms and conditions that 5 years ago people paid even tipped
Past 3 is getting worse.
My terms and conditions went from half page, to 1 then 2 now 5 and may keep growing.
Cheap fuckers.
Like to call their boss have them cheated out if pay

George......this was EXTREMELY satisfying to watch. You owned him like a BOSS.
😂 this was definitely one of my favorite videos to watch. We had a lawn customer fire us because it took us 10 minutes to cut their yard for $40. Oh and that was after we were cutting their lawn for almost two years lol
Happened to me 3 times this year. 😂 I tell them it's a $15k lawnmower it does what I need it to do. I tell me to see what we use is not cheap. They shut up fire me on the spot. 😂
I love that you go above and beyond for your clients. Too bad it’s not appreciated.
Thank you brother I feel the same.
I run a pool business and i get customers like that. If your pool is small and pretty much clean when i take you on as an account, it doesnt take much chems or time to keep it clean. So i may be there for 5 minutes. My starting rate is $175/mt. They'll come out and say "For what i pay you should be here for at least an hour." Me: "Um...service agreement states i get paid by the pool, not hourly, ma'am."
"Well i think its absurd you charge that much for what you do."
Me: "But thats what you signed. You're welcome to hire someone cheaper who isnt CPO certified and insured. Good luck with your pool."
I dont put up with that crap. I have 147 accounts. I can spare to throw a few bad apples away.
I love you man, “yeah I’ve been to jail it ain’t that bad“. You’re also the guy that taught me to put a lien against their house! I love how you teach us all to play rough, kick ass, and hold people accountable!
I feel your pain George, I had a Doctor hid in his house, 5 separate visits to try get paid, I Knocked so hard on the door the frame nearly came out, I was so mad, it was only£30.00
DOCTORS ARE THE HARDEST IN THE WORLD TO GET PAID FROM
I was standing behind a dipshit in Home Depot at the return counter and he was arguing with the cashier about a nickel...yes 5 cents. I lost my cool and said what the Hell is going on??? Can you get a manager over here to take care of this a$$wipe? The customer dipsh1t turned around to me and said "I'm a DOCTOR!!" I said "I don't give a flying Fk! Right now you're an a$$hole and your wasting my time over a g0dd@m nickel??
He was Indian I bet
Put a lien on the property. Doctors think they’re gods gift to mankind so they don’t have to pay you. And lawyers think since they know the law that they don’t have to pay you lol
You've got my vote for all those free extras you did. That old man has done alright for himself with all that land and a lovely home. Some people are never satisfied
He probably inherited it from his hard working parents while he lazed around his whole life
Never offer or agree to do extra freebies until after you've done precisely what you've bid to do and been paid. Many people lose respect for you if you do extras.
If my contractor finished a job in half the time, for good quality work, I'd be happy as hell.
“I’ve been to jail, shit ain’t that bad” best quote to date
Glad you like that Chris.
You went above and beyond for this guy. He got a deal! That's easily 4k worth of work in my business.
Least you got the check. I still got clients refuse to pay for work performed.
theviet hey don’t mind me asking but what does that mean I wanna get into landscaping it’s sounds like something I would love to do I’ve done a couple times with my uncle can you please elaborate.
theviet honestly, had some Pakistanian guy not wanting to pay me for a building 30Gs and had to put a lien on it
I'm sorry you can't hear how much I am applauding you right now. Some people just need to be schooled in life and who not to mess with.
Also, that client doesn't realize he's paying for your knowledge of how to do the work, not just the work itself. Like when you take your car for service and it's fixed in a half hour, but he charges you like 800 dollars. You pay for the knowledge of the person doing the work, not just the work itself.
.5 hrs in the company of a lawyer and see how light ur pocket becomes
It takes years and years together that knowledge, of course they should be paid for it
Margarettsville you are absolutely correct sir.
Where you got that right. Louis.
Thank you I'll key you are absolutely correct.
Savage. I like your style G Packard!
As a contractor I think you kept your cool pretty well. I have had a few customers I have absolutely lost my mind at and called every name in the book. It is 100% correct that the reason people get pissed off is if they think you didn't take enough time, even if you do the work to the same standard you would if you took ten times the time.
The bottom line is He thought it was a fair price for that amount of work before He saw how long it would take.
Right. Instead that he recognize a shortening of a loud and dust, he punishes it. That is a proof he is a very narrow man. Stupid, as Packard said.
S-T-U-P-I-D
@@cbot375 so true.. and if they had agreed on per hour it would have taken 2 days
Yup, I too am a contractor, sometimes these people, and I use the term loosely, just try to manufacture a complaint to whittle the price down, many of these flakes have made a small fortune playing these games with contractor after contractor. I don't put up with it, pay or not, a lien against your property WILL get me paid, even if I have to wait till you expire and your estate winds it's way through probate, IF your heirs want to get their money, I GET MINE FIRST!!! It's these types that make being self employed a total headache some days, and there seems to be more and more of them that want to roll the dice and see how much they can knock off the price that THEY AGREED TO IN THE FIRST PLACE. SICKENING!
We do the jobs as an hourly rate but we don’t decide the amount of time. There’s a book time for every job.
This guy is obviously not a business owner. Congrats on keeping it together the bit you did. There is nothing to do about these kinds of people.
These idiot customers do not take into account that your track loader cost 60k and all your other equipment and overhead
The Bro Jumps in his tractor turns around and says, "And I got his pin!"...... Fade to black. Oscar award !!!!! 🏅
He tried to get cute with you and when you stood up to his attempt to bully you, he backed off quickly.
It would seem so.
The extra work you did was worth the money alone. People like this man refusing to pay for these gentleman’s hard work is the reason why I’ve lost faith in humanity.
As someone who owns a business all I have to say is awesome video dude you handled that perfectly
This video had me rolling. I was waiting for George to go on a “ This Guy “ rant. I love your videos George.
I think you handled it perfectly.... I would have had trouble keeping my hands off him ! Well done!
I hate people who do not wanna pay. They do not understand, contractors know the faster the job gets done, the more money they make, Capitalism at it's best. No Greed, just Professionalism. He should ask, how long will job take. No shame in jail if it is for a good reason.
It's funny how the cheapest customers are the pickiest.
I don't know about that I think the rich ones are a pain in the ass
@@GPackard You know George I think they're all a pain in the ass lol. We've got customers that think we should do the job for next to nothing and then expect it to look like the white house. We work for rich ones too and they kinda suck too. We'll only send our most experienced guys for those ones. Thankfully over the years though we've weeded out the ones that were impossible to please and we have mostly pretty reasonable ones now.
My Dad had a Window Washing Business years ago and He taught me "No Good Deed goes Unpunished". He was a WW2 Marine and like you put up with NO BS. He was a Straight Shooter who said it like it is, No Fluff. If he didn't like you...You knew it! I am told I'm much like him, "Course"....a Title I wear Proudly!
That's funny stuff Jeff thanks for commenting.
Yeah well it turned out okay we got paid got our money.
Great video George! A lot of us deal with these types of customers but don’t get to see it on RUclips. Keep up the good work!!
My pressure went up just watching this . Hell yeah man you hit it on the head plus I thought you handled it well compared to my encounters like this. You are right. They hate it because people like this think they are better than you and smarter. They hate the fact that they did everything they were supposed to, kept theyre nails nice and tidy but still dont know why you seem to come out on top.
Thanks for the comment brother.
Best part. “And I got his pen”
I had the same, thanks for stronger encouragement. have a wonderful Labor Day.
Thank you! You too!
Thank you for this video. We literally had this exact thing happen this week. The customer signed a contract and now is saying we’re making too much money for 10 hours of work. Apparently it’s our fault we are efficient and work hard. Thank you again
Daniel, this happens all the time to contractors all the time you just keep working hard brother it'll pay off in the end.
Nice job George, as a self employed person I've had customers like this, they just don't get it, you the man all the best Will🍻
This is why I always come out and meet the homeowner before I even send a quote. If I get a bad vibe, I don’t even send out the quote. It’s not easy being a contractor.
Many contractors dont get paid or get burned.
Yeah but you know meeting that guy in I caught no drift of a jerk on our first meeting so I guess you never know.
Not if you've been in business for more than a couple of years.
I think customers like that, want to do this so you get mad as hell and walk off the job without payment!!
Thanks for the kind words bill I appreciate your comment.
Loved how you handled that guy, but the funniest thing you said was, "I've been to jail, shit ain't that bad"...LOL.
Never do extras unless repeat customer.
Cause they will expect that EVERY time.
I wish I could 10x like this.

Theres always some clients trying to get outta paying. Never fails no matter what biz it is.

Doesn't that just go figure.
Two things I learned watching this. 1) Don’t give extras beyond the contract. If you are going to remove and add something make it a substitution and have them initial the change. 2) Take before and after pictures or video from every job
Amen to you, brother I had a customer try to stiff me on Christmas for $4500 for some flooring. I told him it needed a vapor barrier he didn’t want to pay for it. He had someone else put it down because I refused to do it without it , the floor swelled, and he tried to blame me And hold my money for the job I did which was an interior remodel. He was extremely rude. his wife was trying to flirt and everything to keep me off track. I knew in my gut as workers we can tell when people are going to be jerks so he got loud and acted like a tough guy. I’m not gonna pay until this resolved blah blah blah blah blah blah again I had no flooring in my contract didn’t touch it. I was so angry that he was going to try and stiff me and I have several kids I was banking on that money to make Christmas good for them and I did work my ass off, I got one of my disposable cameras. I’m dating myself obviously it was empty, but I walked up and I started clipping pictures of his wife him his kids playing in the front yard again. The camera was empty and I didn’t speak. I just kept clipping pictures his whole face changed all the blood left his face he said what are you doing? I didn’t answer him. I just kept clicking pictures and wind in a little plastic-deal. All of a sudden the old man I guess maybe his father came out didn’t speak in English, but he came out shaking so bad with my check in his hand. He handed it to me. He knew exactly what I was doing. He just didn’t know I was faking, I felt bad for getting that angry and doing that but I’ve had several since then ,it’s time to pay and then they just act totally different and treat me like shit. It’s a bad feeling because I put a lot of love into what I do, but I don’t let them get away with it not anymore. God bless.
There is only so much you can do for someone. You held up your end of the bargain and he paid at the end. It’s a shame the guy doesn’t understand business because he would have been happy he got extra stuff done. You did a great job!
