If i get free service I always pay more on top of what I am owed. I had a side yard torn up, 6 stumps removed and needed almost a foot of top soil. It was several truckloads.
The guys ended up doing the side yard, the back yard and everything touching the driveway, It was a LOT of free work but they did it because it would make the whole thing more presentable for their namesake.
I paid in full before the work was done then an extra 15% on job completion for the extra work and materials.
Why do people have to suck so much?

Everybody thinks theyre a painter until they pick a brush up and spend an entire weekend painting. Then they realise it's so much harder and time consuming than they thought. Then they look at the crap job they did and calculate how many weekends it's going to take them to achieve this crap and they call an expert in.

She said, "my last guy charged $40 bi-weekly." I asked if he had a truck, trailer full of equipment and 3 guys and done in 15 minutes. She said yes. I told her he was probably paying those guys $15/ hour and driving between $30-50k worth of equipment. He was making anything off your yard and most likely why he ignored your calls. He out grew your type of yard. She understood, pays me $40/week and my son and i finish in 45 minutes. People don't get the whole equipment cost, insurance cost, help cost and of course, Uncle Sam in your pockets.

Me: "Um...service agreement states i get paid by the pool, not hourly, ma'am."

Damn. Some elders forget inflation and think we still live in the past when car shops charged $20per hour unlike today at $90 per hour.
My father has been doing masonry for 50 years and myself 20 years now. We can't get the prices back up from where they were in the 90s bc of the inflows of cheap under the table workers. A lot of the GCs and builders just won't pay with the times but some do but majority rules.
So you can just imagine what some customers and GCs think when they compare our bids with others who don't pay taxes, work without General liability and Comp and get paid nothing bc their inexperienced. Hell we can't even afford medical to our employees imagine that cost added.
So many are going out of business too just go to equipment repair shops and you'll find equipment with unpaid repair bills. We will never lower our prices to compete with the cheaters just can't or we are out of business with broken down equipment and bald tires. We need to get our licenses and permits back. Why some require license and other professions don't I don't know. I can't understand it. So many masonry jobs done incorrectly.

He said yes and the they proceeded to use my father's snow blower to do the job. When they went to get paid, the neighbor told them he thought they were going to shovel it by hand (a job that would've taken hours) and then he refused to pay them because they completed the job in a lot less time than he anticipated. After arguing with him for a bit, they finally relented. Then they proceded to blow all of the snow back into his driveway while he stood in his house and helplessly (and angrily) watched them do it.

He had someone else put it down because I refused to do it without it , the floor swelled, and he tried to blame me And hold my money for the job I did which was an interior remodel. He was extremely rude. his wife was trying to flirt and everything to keep me off track. I knew in my gut as workers we can tell when people are going to be jerks so he got loud and acted like a tough guy. I’m not gonna pay until this resolved blah blah blah blah blah blah again I had no flooring in my contract didn’t touch it. I was so angry that he was going to try and stiff me and I have several kids I was banking on that money to make Christmas good for them and I did work my ass off, I got one of my disposable cameras. I’m dating myself obviously it was empty, but I walked up and I started clipping pictures of his wife him his kids playing in the front yard again. The camera was empty and I didn’t speak. I just kept clipping pictures his whole face changed all the blood left his face he said what are you doing? I didn’t answer him. I just kept clicking pictures and wind in a little plastic-deal. All of a sudden the old man I guess maybe his father came out didn’t speak in English, but he came out shaking so bad with my check in his hand. He handed it to me. He knew exactly what I was doing. He just didn’t know I was faking, I felt bad for getting that angry and doing that but I’ve had several since then ,it’s time to pay and then they just act totally different and treat me like shit.
