Certs are indeed BS. I’ve got a few and nobody has ever hired me because of my certifications. They say things like “your certifications show that you have a willingness to learn.” And that’s it.

Try government contracts only because how can a degree get you a hire paying job with no experience whatsoever, you can also do projects too to gain experience for those certifications you got

Someone going to the dark web and buying a cheat sheet for their Certification , gives them more experience than actually taking said Certification's exam.

As a person living in South Africa I cannot afford these certs especially with the Rand being a lot weaker than the $..Took my bonus and bought the PJPT and must say the hands on hacking was awesome, those are the certs that should really mean something

I've been railing against CompTIA for over a decade. I'm a hiring manager and only look at certs as a supposed knowledge baseline, and when I interview these candidates, I drill into their actual technical knowledge and experience. There are too many exam dumper are out there, and HR is too lazy to understand the needs beyond these cert letters.

What would you recommend we do to gain experience without prior education nor experience in order to land an entry level position as a pentester? Please and thank you!:)

Practical Exams like the eJPT, OSCP, etc. that focus on initiative for problem solving by implementing the skills learned from their courses through problem scenario questions are much better than knowledge dumpable exams like CompTIA and even CEH. Even the CCNA exam, though majority of the exam content at about 85-90% is still pretty much a knowledge dump, at least have some questions where you must learn to implement the correct configuration of given devices which give some form of technical knowledge assessment. It’s better to have exams that answer the question “Do you know how to do this? Prove it” rather than “Do you remember what this is?” and this is the reason why I’m very interested in the eJPT and OSCP.

Correct! The only issue now is to convince HR and Hiring Managers. We are already convinced, they should be the target.

But is it even possible to get a job without certifications at all? What about university degrees? Should we just get a degree rather than certification?

I mean it really depends, technically no, you don't need a cert nor degree to get the job you want to get started in. Your projects and profile and connections are really the thing that they most look for anyway. But if you have a cert, it'll bypass a lot of jobs to get to the interview, which ultimately depends on your income source, whether it coming from your pocket or someone else or some company that is willing to invest in you.

Certs or no certs it all comes down to passion. Previous certs can be downloaded and loaded into Anki flashcards for free. Doesn't mean they can do anything other than the cash to take the exam untill a paasing grade.
