Kobe relative to era simply is efficient. for example 46% in his prime years vs Jordan 48% except Kobe's era was actually less scoring and slower pace. Lerbon 50% vs Kobe 45% for career, except Kobe lived on a harder shot diet than anyone else. There you go. 45% on any shot you want... was good in the early 2000's edit: you said all those things lol
    Edit: Playoffs for their Career
Kobe 48% EFG. (Gets higher if you exclude first 2 seasons)
    Michael Jordan 50% EFG.
Nearly Identical to the goat in scoring efficiency by itself.

Jordan's prime was definitely hitting above 48%, my guy. Way better mid-range shooter too, not even close. Pretty sure the gap between MJ's recorded percentages and Kobe's are bigger than Kobe's and LeBron's, and LeBron is the one with the "can't shoot" reputation. And you can say whatever you want about the shot diet, but taking a bad shot, even if you make it at a higher clip than everyone else, still has negative effects on the offense, especially when you're taking it because you want to and not because you have to (i.e. someone else has a better look).

agree for the most part. the peak thing bugs me though.
ability wise, you can put up mid 2000s Kobe against anybody. when he was still elite on D and was the greatest volume scorer of all time? in 06 he literally took his team from the 3rd worst offense since the merger (off court) to top 5 in the league (on court). there was a reason why Mark Jackson said he thought Kobe would go down as greater than MJ that season, it was when people saw that, oh shit, he might be on that level. That is why his peers compare him to MJ.
then you look at the 08-10 playoff runs and, i'll be honest, i don't know if i can name 5 3 year playoff stretches that are better when you consider competition (11 50+ win teams in 3 years, never replicated) and defense. yeah i know he wasn't elite at that point but he was still better than Magic, Bird or Steph ever were. 30 PPG on good efficiency captaining that team through those playoff years, toughest conference in league history. and let's not forget, Pau is a deserving HOFer and was a great number 2, but where TF is he without Kobe? is he comparable to D Wade, AD, Pippen, Kareem, McHale, hell Kobe, as a second best player?

Kobe making 12 all defensive teams was popularity contest they robbed dwade and tony allen some of those. All he did was showboat guarding someone halfcourt he was never a lockdown defender, he was a lousy help defender and couldn't guard anyone in the post. Dwade never made 1st all defensive team because of him for crying out loud. I will also go to the extent that they robbed dwade of couple of 1st all nba teams favoring kobe post 2010 they even voted dwade as a point guard to the all nba team in '08-'10 even though he was the best shooting guard in the league from that point on just to keep kobe in there. Also kobe was never a talented shooter, after all the hardwork in the gym he only managed to be a slightly efficient than iverson. He has no business taking those many jumpshots he should've kept slashing to the rim like he did in the early 2000s until he became a lazy 1 on 1 scorer. If you say he took the most difficult shots that's on him. He took the hardest shots and rightfully missed a lot of them he also missed a lot of makeable shots anyway. He was also blessed to win those rings, when he got drafted he had shaq landing on his lap and when he demanded for a trade the lakers pulled off a heist by trading kwame brown for pau gasol. He wasn't the best player on his own team in the first 3 titles and when he tried to be the one they lost in 2004 against detroit when he was hogging the ball. He was great in '09. In 2010 he got bailed a lot by pau and artest and barely won the finals after his horrendous performance in the series when he only shot 40% field goal which is his worst output in a series since that 2004 finals. Post 2010 he had no business being 1st all nba or any all defensive player it was purely the reputation fueling him. Lastly, in his last 3 years when he was no longer athletic you thought he's gonna kill everyone purely with his skills but it turns out he was just clunking shots after shots he can't shoot and was no longer an nba player.

Gotta disagree with your take on Kobe not being one of the great perimeter defenders to ever play. That's a ridiculous statement. The top 2 defenders of the 2000's were Tim Duncan at #1, and Kobe at #2. He didn't get his 1st-team All Defense selections in his prime years just because he was Kobe. If that truly was the case, then why hasn't Lebron made the All-Defensive team for years now just based off of his name? Kobe got those selections by forcing turnovers, blocking shots, forcing tough shots, etc. You can look at plays here and there where he gets beat on a play, or watches the ball too much, but those are isolated plays in long 82 game seasons, including playoffs. That's far from what happened most of the time. Everyone has those lowlights, including Duncan, and Garnett (the best rim protectors in the game at that time). MJ has those as well, and he's the GOAT. Also, keep in mind, Kobe played both ends of the floor at the highest level, and didn't miss many games at all. As for rim protectors being more valuable defenders, that's true from a team standpoint, but that doesn't make a rim protector the better defender. Rim protectors aren't usually guarding opponents in space, and they often have help defense, especially back before teams started to space the floor like Michael Irvins front teeth. The paint was usually clogged with 2 or 3 defenders by the time the opponent drove to the hoop.

Kobe's two best defensive seasons were 1999-00 when he shot less than Shaq and 2000-01. Those were his only elite seasons on the defensive end. From 04 to 09, then 2011 to 2013, he was an average level defender. He showed some great defense in 2010, that team altogether was defensively sound. Mid 2000s Kobe defense was meh.

I recently came across your video discussing Kobe Bryant's career, specifically focusing on his offensive efficiency and the perception of him being carried. I appreciate the thought-provoking points you made in your video, but I wanted to address one aspect where I respectfully disagree: Kobe Bryant's defensive abilities.
In my view, Kobe was far from being overrated defensively. Throughout his career, Kobe was known for taking great pride in his defensive skills and actively sought out the challenge of guarding the opposing team's most potent offensive threats. He fully embraced the role of being a stopper and relished the opportunity to go head-to-head against the best players in the league. So I call cap my guy on this assessment lol!
While it is true that even the greatest defenders have their flaws, it's important to acknowledge that defending exceptional offensive players is a challenging task. They will inevitably score and occasionally embarrass even the most proficient defenders. However, Kobe always accepted this challenge and never shied away from it.
To illustrate this point further, let's consider other renowned defenders. Michael Jordan, for example, had difficulties defending smaller guards, while LeBron James has occasionally lost focus or been caught out of position when defending off the ball. Even Tim Duncan, who was an outstanding defender overall, had instances where opponents could exploit him in pick-and-roll situations. Every player, regardless of their defensive prowess, has weaknesses. Wade had some difficulty defending against three-point shooters. He occasionally struggled to close out effectively on perimeter shooters, leaving them open for uncontested shots.
Moreover, I understand that videos can be curated to push a particular narrative. If one were to compile clips of defensive errors, it would be possible to create a misleading portrayal of any player's defensive capabilities. It's essential to take a holistic view and appreciate the overall impact Kobe had on the defensive end.
Lastly, I must emphasize Kobe’s unparalleled work ethic and his unwavering commitment to the game. Throughout his career, he faced numerous injuries that would have sidelined many other players. These include multiple ankle injuries, finger injuries, knee problems, a devastating Achilles tendon tear, a knee fracture, and shoulder injuries. Despite these setbacks, Kobe consistently displayed remarkable resilience, often playing through pain, and never compromising his contributions on both ends of the court. I wanted to express my admiration for KB’s defensive abilities and his extraordinary work ethic. His dedication to continuously challenge himself and put his body through immense strain sets him apart as one of the all-time greats. I value the opportunity to share alternative perspectives and engage in discussions about the game we love.

@@jacoblee5796 Opinions on individual players and their defensive abilities can vary, and it's natural for people to have differing perspectives. However, it's important to acknowledge that Kobe Bryant, a highly accomplished and respected player, was widely recognized for his defensive skills throughout his career. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team numerous times, indicating recognition from coaches and peers for his defensive contributions.
While it is true that guarding the opposing team's best player is not solely indicative of defensive prowess, it is worth noting that Kobe often embraced challenging defensive assignments against star players. Additionally, his defensive impact extended beyond individual matchups, including his ability to disrupt passing lanes, provide help defense, and generate steals.

He would have an off night from time to time but him being inefficient was always baffling to me. A card haters pull out when they want to critisize Kobe. The man really shot above league average true shooting percentage every year of his prime 2000-2013 while scoring way more than league average. Even if you want to compare purely FG%: Look at Kobe and Lebron ("the efficient player") shot attempts and makes per game for their career - it's about 1 shot difference, yet Kobe relied way more on outside shooting. Kobe's mid range percentage, anywhere from 3-25 feet, blows out Lebron's percentage, who gets most of his points on layups and dunks.

Sorry but Kobe was an elite defender. You just haven't watched 98% of his games in full. I know and watched since 96 till the end in 2016. He just lay low in 2012. So for 14 yrs from 98-2012 he did locked down Guards- small forwards specially if it's an all star. He loves to blocked perimeter shots l, if the player he guarded was a strong or taller than him he would just simply out smart him, by blocking him from the side or back. He loves those in your face blocks in transition unlike the le flop. His timing is not as the casual dum dum defensive players, he plays the passing lanes 40% of the game. He got active hands not as strong as Mike or Artest but good enough to swipe his opponents clean. Effeciency? This is made up by dorks, nerds and le floppy fans. Of course Kobe played in a physical Defensove Zoned ERA OF nBA..he was 3ple or quadruple teamed hundreds of times from 2002-2012. In the perimeter, low block, 3 point area or even just positioning to catch a ball. He still averaged 35.4 pts in a yr in that era. Kobe is a top 3 NBA great of all time. Unlike Le flop who's not even a top 12 NBA great kobe is also the most Hated by Media NBa great of all time. I can see lots of Mobrons and Le Tards love Kobe to be discredited. So instead of using Defensive WIn Shares, or defensive +/-, you cherry pick a bunch of plays among a massive sample size of 82 games x 2004 - 2013, and cherry pick a quote by Phil Jackson, when the fact is the NBA ALL DEFENSE TEAM is voted on by NBA COACHES who watch film and they have as great an understanding of who is genuinely good defensively and who isn't. NBA coaches voted Kobe All NBA Defense 12 times NOT journalists "voting on reputation" like it is now. Overrated defensively? By THAT standard Lebron is the most overrated defender in NBA history. Dude has been playing bad defense 80% of his career and still, somehow, got 6 all nba defense teams off of chase down block highlights. Also Peak Kobe is better and higher than peak Lebron. You don't even make an argument, analytical or otherwise, other than cherry pick one Phil Jackson quote, and cherry pick a few bad defensive plays.
Fact is ALL NBA players have moments like these, including MJ. Fact is Kobe's peak was higher than Lebron's peak, so stop pretending like it's a "fact" that peak Lebron is higher than peak Kobe. Kobe is better than Lebron, period. And unlike Lebron, he doesn't take EPO.

Kyrie is arguably the most offensively skilled player ever, yet is nowhere near a top 50 all-time player. Skills are nowhere near the ability to impact success on a team.

When people bring up Kobe and efficiency neither side can actually provide a solid statistical argument. Naysayers bring up FG% which historically is low, but doesn’t give proper context to the league. Fanboys like to bring in TS%. Unfortunately Kobe’s TS% rises and falls heavily with FTA cause people for some reason forget that 2 FT’s made are weighted heavier than a layup made. Go cora-late the slide on 13:20 with FTA you’ll see +/- go up a lot when he’s 6+ FTAg. EFG% really to me shows where Kobe was as a guy shooting from the field cause it reflects league shot selection year to year and takes the whistle out of the compilation. Kobe from 1996-1997 to 2012-2013 pretty much within + or - 1% for league avg EFG% every year. So Kobe wasn’t efficient and he wasn’t inefficient. He was league average.
Honestly though I think Kobe was a great player, but 3 things keep him out of the top 10 to me. 2004 finals, 2006 game 7 1st round, and 2008 finals. I’m not sure any single top 20 guy has anything quite as self inflicted as those three moments. 2004 is a more embarrassing performance than Magic Johnson 1983, Lebron James 2011, or Curry 2016. At least they got beat by a teams that had a top 50 all time player. 2006, I do not want to here about Kobe telling the lakers he needed help. In 2 years then went from old and outdated to a young rising team that should have beaten phoenix. In stead you get a glorified tantrum cause Kobe doesn’t like the narrative. 2008 was honestly crap he allowed boston to put him on a island and take a lot of ridiculous contested jumper. What was funny in 2010 he actually shot more, but it worked better cause he allowed the team and coaching to get him better open looks instead of idiotically trying to force everything.

Agreed, his fanbase always tries to gloss over his big chokes in 2004 and 2008. I think LeBron's 2011 choke is still worst, but Kobe's 2004 Finals performance is the definition of a player costing his team any chance of winning with his selfishness. He was so content on gunning for that elusive Finals MVP. Also, in the history of the NBA, I don't think any player has been bailed out more in the clutch in the playoffs than one Kobe Bryant. I have seen so many role players catch or rebound his crappy misses and put them back ftw. Shaw, Horry, Fisher, Gasol, Artest have all made big shots for him right after he missed the potential game winner in the playoffs.

I am blown away by apologist in the comments actually saying the man was efficient. lol like what??? using league average and different percentages to find clever ways to sidestep the fact that he was inefficient. Its really simple by using fg%. Kobe is an elite player so he needs to be judged by that standard and by that standard he was not efficient. The man has held the record for most missed shots ever for a while. He has shot lower than 45% in 6 of 7 of his nba finals. yes slightly below 50%fg is not really inefficient but like i said he is Elite so judging by that he was very inefficient and he couldve been so much more inefficient if he didnt hijacked the teams offense, take on double and triple teams and take terrible/tough shots. He never shot 47% in a season even when he played with SHAQ. meaning not getting doubled and tripled. so please stop talking nonsense

Did you know that peak Kobe is a top 3 scorer of all time? Did you know that the later peak of Kobe is damn near very great (08-10) when he faced 11 50-win teams. Imagine facing 2 8 seeds that won 50 games in the first round? There's a reason why people compare Kobe's peak to MJ's peak. The peak part is very wrong. Because if Kobe retired in '08, yes he wont be regarded as a top 10 player, because he was like Harden who scores much but doesn't translate to winning --- HOWEVER ---- 05-07- his ultimate peak, HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY HELP AT ALL. By the way in 05, they were right in the mix of the playoff hunt, but when Kobe got injured, that's when they fell out of the playoff picture. But what made Kobe's peak so impressive especially in the 08-10 season is that HE ONLY NEEDED 1 ALL STAR, and that started their dominance aka a mini-dynasty.
    Think about it
-How many players do you know right esp in the top 10, who only had one all star by his team and a bunch of quality players, that beat 11 50 win teams in a 3 year run, and won back to back? MJ? Well he had Pippen and you can't tell me Gasol was better than Pippen ey? Yes in the last 2 championships Pippen sucked, but the first 4, he was better than Pau.
The fact is Kobe's peak is vastly underrated because we only think of it as him leading the league in scoring without translating it to wins, but in reality, at the time of his ultimate prime, HE HAD NO HELP!
You can do better than that @Yung Mustard. You mentioned that Kobe's peak was overrated without backing up any context to it, you just mentioned players names etc.

Granted he just won his final championship in 2010, but to expect him to still be the same dog defesively as he is in his earlier years is asking for too much. But for sure, you know he can and will step up to the defensive assignment if needed, cuz that's the type of player he is, and that's the type of mindset he has.

That’s why he has a negative defensive box +\- for his career.

Underrated --- His athleticism and physical strength is pretty phenomenal.
Playmaking ability as a collective scorer, passer, and making plays for other players.
His off-the ball offense is often slept on, people often faulted alot of wing scorers from that era being disengaged when the ball wasn't in their hands, and that absolutely doesn't apply to Kobe.
Overrated -- Late game heroics are legendary and nearly unmatched, but in the playoffs there are other challengers to that title, even the much maligned LeBron, KD and Curry are all pretty good in the 4th Quarter/Late game situations/Game 7s.
After that injury 2012, he was not the same player, and probably got a few things off reputations, but most superstar players do.
    HOT TAKES:
Kobe was arguably the best player in the league from 01-04, and he was the undisputed best player from 04-08. Nash and Dirk were great offensive players, but I don't think I'd take them over Kobe, while he was also far better defender than both at that stage of his career. Although, uber-talented and skilled, LeBron was still learning the ropes around the league, but he was the one that I think was closer to Kobe at the time. He should've had 2-3 more MVPs, easily. This is not me saying this as a fan or hater, this is purely from what his peers have said about him and people who had to guard him.
Not a diss at Kobe, when people say that the Lakers would've won 3 titles with another great SG in his place. It's not because Kobe was inferior, it was because the Lakers had a juggernaut roster. You add any other high caliber, versatile guard next Van Exel/Jones/Horry/Campbell/Fisher/Fox or Rice/Harper/Grant/Horry/Fisher/Fox with Phil Jackson. The Lakers just had a strong haven of talent, and they could draft fairly well.
Kobe, not on the Lakers, might have had a greater chance at breaking the All-Time scoring record and he may have had shot at the all-time scoring average lead.
Kobe is not an "MJ clone", he had his own pure Kobe-Mamba style. Granted, he had a similar fadeaway and on-court gestures, but he did some things that were distinctly different from MJ.

I can think of maybe MJ, Wade, Jerry West, but no one else can fill those shoes both offensively and defensively.
