  • Disclaimer! This is one of Roald Dahl's more dark and disturbing stories. You may find it upsetting, so listen with caution.
Roald Dahl Collection Playlist: • Roald Dahl Collection
"The Swan" is a short story about the boys Ernie and his friend Raymond, who like to bully Peter Watson. When Ernie receives a rifle for his fifteenth birthday, they both shoot birds on their way to the rabbit field. They soon come across Peter Watson and bully him terribly. First by tying him to the railway tracks, and later by sending him to get the birds that they have shot. The story builds to a horrible climax where Ernie shoots a swan and does something disturbing with its corpse.

    That sucks.

@@lewiskirk8289 They are psychopaths. Their brains are not wired in a way that allows them to be reformed. I don’t know whether it’s impossible, but it’s certainly very difficult to bring someone from such darkness. They would have to grow a conscious mind, which they don’t have. They are just predators driven by the impetus to cause harm and destroy. They’re not human, there is nothing to reform because there is nothing there. Not conscious means that there is nothing there. They were born precisely to cause harm, they’re shadows, again: not people, but shadows. Psychiatrists don’t know the first about them, and I feel for anyone who has to be around them in any way.

Roald Dahl was the king of the Macabre story and twist at the end of a story! I owe a great debt to him as his stories really helped the channel grow early in. @@lewiskirk8289 thank you for your note! Yes, I have a particular love of the macabre….and coupled with your uncanny ability to transport the listener right into the story - I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos. In fact, as a reader myself, I didn’t think I’d like the “audio” experience- but I had just finished reading a collection of Dahl’s short stories and was desperate for more. You converted me…I was instantly hooked! The Swan, though, while brilliant - and I know what Dahl was doing at an intellectual level- was just relentlessly cruel. Again - combine a talented mind with a talented voice - and that story just left me reeling (and mad at Dahl for not giving me the vengeful relief I craved). Thanks again for your wonderful readings…they have made a difference for me!

It's a strange ending, and I'm not sure that there is any sort of profound meaning. He does make it home to his mother's back garden, then he faints and she takes him inside and calls the ambulance.

Jokes aside. I feel like Roald Dahl knows the true nature of bullies and the true dynamics of bullying. He shows it in this book. I work with children. They are like this.
