  • ...And a rather good one at that! More scenery and history!
But first-a visit to some of our good friends in Ellicott City! Long time no see! We even visit a business for the first time-the Ellicott Distilling Company, offering home-brewed (or is that home-distilled?) spirits produced right here in Ellicott City! And, yes...it's bullfrog-approved.
After EC it's a scenic drive to places on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal with some first-time routes. We'll even drive through an historic culvert beneath the canal that's a road when it's dry...but carries a stream when it rains! That was 1820s state-of-the-art. So was the canal.
On our return trip we pass through Clear Spring, which derived its name from a clear spring we have yet to stop and check out. A couple more mountain views too.
As you see by this recent screen gem-I'm still doing my thing, and will continue to...as tolerated (as they say). And, of course-there are the obvious reasons for the slight slowdown. Both Dolly and I are fully covid-vaccinated, but being in the high-risk category, we still have to follow the existing precautions (and stress that others who might have received the vaccination do so as well-the more protection, the better-we value our viewers). But-already-got another one in the works!

i have become a true fan of yours. i live in southeast PA near the DE and MD borders. i've cruised many (but not all!) of the same roads you do. i'm blown away by your encyclopedic (savant like?) knowledge of not only the current and former RR lines, but also your knowledge of a trolley line that once ran here, a road alignment they moved over there, a viaduct wall that got rammed back in this year, and what-have-you. i mean how the hell do you know all of that? are you a time traveller as well?
this current vid is absolutely the best quality picture yet, i mean wow. my household gifted itself w an 82.5" samsung for christmas. well let me tell you, it's like i'm riding in the damn car w you and Dolly. your quirky personality and horrible jokes and puns have become a truly welcome soundtrack to my lazy-boy driving adventures. the deadpan delivery and droll cynicism - your whole deal - i like it man!
thank you so much for what you do, the time and effort you put into it, and for all the joy it brings cruising nerds and other dorks like myself who enjoy every ride we take w you :) i'm a fan of ellicott city as well, i gotta get out that way myself soon and cruise some of that original nat'l pike.
hey - have you ever done harper's ferry? i've watched/scrolled a lot of your vids - i don't recall one. you had to be pretty close on this excursion. it's at the confluence of the potomac and shenandoah, it's mad scenic plus all the history - you likely know all this already. so how about a 4K clear as day jaunt over that way soon? i'm on board!
thanks again mr bullfrog, and keep 'em coming. well, except centralia and that closed pa tpk segment. boooooooring :) ha! love you man!
i know it's a bit far, but your take on the delaware water gap and all the remaining RR bridge piers and abutments would be super cool also. if you cover the old RR bridge the reverend converted to a local toll bridge back in the day as well as the remaining access ramp and the super early nj route number on the tiny bridge over the creek? - i think i might pass out :) i have a great book about all the delaware river crossings past and present from trenton nj to hancock ny. (feel free to drop me a line @ jim.diskin.sr@gmail.com if you'd like more fellow nerd info i can share)

Hello Jim, and Thank You very much for that comment! I'd give it two hearts if I could!
How do I know so much? From traveling around just about my entire life! As a kid I'd travel with my parents to New York and Florida. This was in the pre-interstate days, and I found those original routes fascinating. When we'd stop for gas I'd go inside the gas station (clean white look at the time and full service) and see what road maps I could grab up (free at the time). After a point it got to a point where my parents would toss me a map in the back seat where I sat and have me guide them the right way! And I guided them perfectly!
When I was finally old enough to drive on my own, I began exploring roads almost immediately. This was in my parents' car, and they hated me putting all that mileage on it! Even after I bought my own car, they gave me trouble about the mileage!
But that's one way I learned about the various routes-from driving the originals way back then traveling the realignments and interstates later on. These days, there's something called the internet, and there are websites that feature old maps; some going back 100 years. Really interesting to see how today's routes evolved! So, guess one could say it's personal experience and research that gave me my knowledge!
I do appreciate when my viewers tell me they like my presentation! I try to entertain as well as educate. I started narrating stuff in 1977 when I first got a super 8 sound camera. Been doing this for quite some time! Should go through some of those movies from the 70s...might find something! As you see, began doing this even before RUclips! Did it without really knowing why!
As far as Harpers Ferry goes, I've done video there:
      A Rather Special Sunday:
      ruclips.net/video/CCqpWNPpDOE/видео.html
Harpers Ferry WV and the C&O Canal:
      ruclips.net/video/Q5YRrndrofs/видео.html
Done much more over the years I haven't posted yet.
I did take a drive to the Delaware Water Gap back in the late 90s. Crossed from PA into NJ on I-80, then turned around at the next exit to head back to PA. Stopped at the rest area on the NJ side for a while. Got video, but not sure if I can upload! I'll have to get my 8mm camcorder checked out then check the tape...

@@bullfrog1954 without a doubt in a parallel universe you'd be a not that much older brother i'd look up to and admire greatly. it's my distinct pleasure to feel i now know you in some small way and to be a part of the online community that appreciates the beauty of your work as well as the information you provide. hopefully we also keep you motivated and determined to keep getting out there into our often bright and sunny world. we are truly blessed to live on this particular patch of the great blue marble.
i have a history in auto sales and on test drives w people from across the country and around the world they would marvel at the rolling hills and country scenery. thankfully within mere minutes from philadelphia or baltimore you can get lost on back country roads with beautiful farms, pastures, streams and rivers. a fact which you demonstrate for us so often!
we're long past any applicable statute of limitations, and i fully appreciate that many things are taken wayy more seriously today than in decades past. especially for those of us who were younger and much more engagingly reckless (blissfully stupid?) back in the day. i'm a PHD - papa had dealership. so i was always undeservingly blessed w free cars to drive (demos) and free gas (papa also had gas cards :).
like you, i loved to drive and explore. i attended college a good ways across the state, drove home on far too many weekends, and had a long distance gf who lived near to the DC national zoo. needless to say i got of parental hassle about mileage as well. but back then speedometers/odometers were much less effectively sealed and for a few bucks or a case of beer a tech just disconnect a cable for you and then reconnect it a few months down the road for similar remuneration. not saying it was right, still a big deal even back then. but hey, young guys in their late teens and early 20s often have a different outlook and set of priorities than society at large. still true today. ahh, the wonders of youth, vitality and far too much testosterone! now don't even get me started on how i scammed the tolls on the PA tpk until the black magnetic strip they eventually added to the back of the tickets rained on that parade. it was a number of trips around the sun before EZ-Pass came to be and i found me a new loophole to exploit. the powers that be caught on there eventually too - mankind's perennial cat and mouse game. as only a low ranking rat in the maze i never felt bad about 'sticking it to the man' - the government, AT&T, the thieving cable company, other darth-vaderish evil exploitive empires. but i ramble incessantly...
anyway, my likely much more law-abiding and honorable sibling i needed more than deserved, i did stumble upon some of your harper's ferry footage courtesy of links you posted to another fan a bit below. your fountain of footage for me to nerd out on seems quite healthy in flow! i also enjoyed some older bullfrog & the missus road adventures, but as you're aware a good bit of the actually rolling down the road stuff from back then is a bit hard to watch today - image stabilization software or lack thereof being a real issue.
i know they can digitally 'de-blur' blurry snapshots nowadays, but i'd guess de-blurring thousands upon thousands of shaky frames would still ring up a pretty big bill on the old national?
my God. it's now 5:12 am and i've got yer bullfrog vids to launch and miles to go before i sleep! you and Dolly stay safe, healthy and happy ya hear? you've not heard the last of this former pa bandit. or should that be former bandit from pa? hmm, surely an ambiguity worth pondering ... ttys!

Again, very interesting! Great you had access to free cars even if they were demos) and gas! Back in the day, for me, that would have been like dying and going to Heaven! As far as any "scamming," haven't done anything quite like that yet, but at times came close. When there were still toll machines that you tossed coins into, at times I'd toss in less than the required amount, most often by mistake. I'd hear a bell ding from the machine as I drove off! These days, I avoid tolls when I can, like when I go down the ocean I use the long way through Delaware, then on the return trip cross the Bay Bridge being it's free westbound. Also, north on US 1, I'll cross the Susquehanna on Conowingo Dam then go back on 95, where the crossing is free southbound.
Great to live in area where countryside isn't a long drive, but that drive is starting to lengthen as more development unfortunately takes place. There were secluded places where I could go with my lady and have relative privacy if we go far enough into the woods. Now, a lot of those woods are gone in favor of condos and shopping centers. But-what I really don't understand is what all the ado over the "shake." Believe me, I try to be as meticulous as humanly possible when I edit! I'm not always gonna be perfect, though-never claimed perfection. My pre-2016 had far more "shake" than any recent ones, but no one complained! I went through some of them, and I'm surprised that I actually accepted the quality as it was! Still-no one said a word! Probably still looked better to me than ones I made from 2007 to 2012, when the videos had more shake yet-but again nothing but compliments! So-I don't know what's going on with that...
Anyway, found a few more items of possible interest for you, including previews from a 1997 documentary on the C&O Canal I plan to sell as a boxset one of these days (a couple actual PhDs previewed some parts and gave them high marks). RUclips even gave me my own mix. They picked everything in it, and there are some videos I wish they didn't pick, so keep that in mind as you see their selection. I guess it's somewhat of an honor when YT does that for somebody...but still...some vids I wish they didn't pick! Still, I must be doing something right for them to do that! Last year my channel got an A+ rating-after some thorough "auditing."
