Spent my whole life in Baltimore and now live at the end of Thames St and still only been in the horse once.
Possibly the busiest bar in Fells.

It was pretty quiet when we were there - but we went early, maybe about 4-6 or so. By 10pm the whole street was shoulder to shoulder and you couldn't get in. Definitely a place to visit if you're in the area!

In 1989 I was 30 and moved to Fells Point from Cincinnati. I was working at Johns Hopkins as a surgical equipment salesman. When I got into town I was looking for a place to live and perused the local City Paper for available apartments. The place I found sounded great. The apartment tenant was looking for a roommate two doors down from The Horse (my apartment window would overlook the open courtyard the bar had at the time) and he just happened to also be the manager of The Horse. I immediately wanted to move in but he told me that I was the first guy applying and he wanted to talk to other possible tenants. I told him look, I work at the hospital, you''ll never see me here during the time you're off work so it will be like you don't even have a roommate. More importantly, I have the money to pay the deposit and rent as I have a great job plus I'm straight so it's not going to get weird when I bring home a woman instead of a man to sleep with. I said the only people that are going to respond to a City Paper ad are guys that are either broke or gay. He said he didn't believe me and told me to check back with him at 5 pm that day. Anyway I stop back by and he says I met 5 other guys today, the first two were broke, the second two were gay and the last one was both broke and gay, so when can you move in. Three hours later I was moved in and partying with a ready set of friends in The Horse thanks to my new roommate.

Great story thanks for sharing - I bet you saw a thing or two at the Horse back in the day!

@@Bucketlistbars I stopped by the area a couple of years ago and the place was a lot brighter inside and obviously much bigger. Back then the only places to hang were The Horse, a sushi bar on the far side of the strip and the strip itself (I'm defining the strip as that area where Bertha's Mussel and the market are). No more than 5 bars and the whole area was undiscovered and undeveloped.

Sorry to burst the bubble but there is NO proof that Poe ever visited this place. Poe was passing through Baltimore and his home was in NEW YORK NOT BALTIMORE! People have told me the staff there says Poe's favorite drink was Jack Daniels!! Hmmm...just when did JD's make it's appearance??? Hmmm...you figure it out. Pure publicity hokum.

JeffGuy Poe ok, we'd take you a lot more seriously if you'd actually bothered to visit. Cheers.

Jack Daniels founded in 1875.... Poe died in 1849.

@@Bucketlistbars I have been there several times. It's a quirky bar without the bogus Poe connection.
