Edward Green are the pinnacle of ready to wear footwear. The Chelsea on the 202 last is the best option. Personally, I would like to visit the Edward Green store and ensure that I got the correct fitting size before making a purchase.
Rev. James C I find the 82 to be a bit more elegant than the 202. For certain styles I prefer the 202 but for an otherwise conservative black toe oxford I believe the 82 makes good sense.
I've always thought that the Edward Green Chelsea is, aesthetically, the most "perfect" cap-toe oxford ever designed. From the last shape to the pattern, it's like the Goldilocks of dress shoes.
I wear John Lobb City II shoes which I love the most. I also own some Edward Green snuff suede Portland loafers which are butterly soft, literally. I'd love to hear some reviews on pieces I own. Keep up a good work! Cheers! :)
I’ve worn Allen Edmonds for many years. Recently, I’ve started wearing Carminas, which I love. With the Edward Greens costing 2-3X the Carminas, what is difference in construction that justifies the cost difference. I don’t see them as having superior design to Carmina, so I am assuming there must be a difference in construction. Thanks.
Would also love to see a review on some Crockett and Jones straight cap oxford and in different lasts please. Price range for the Crockett and Jones fit perfectly into a pair of entry level shoe.
Could you please be a little more critical of the reviewed product? Though all of your review videos are produced incredibly well and beyond usual RUclips standards, I always feel like that every shoe you review doesn’t have any flaws at all. I’d be interested to know where Allen Edmonds sacrifices quality when compared to something like C&J. Are there any noticeable shortfalls in any other shoes you review? Love the shoe shine Sunday series btw
Friedrich Dod you see my Black Cap Toe Oxford Review? I don’t find it’s my place to be overtly critical. Everything we film about is stuff I can recommend at their relative price points. It’s all about budget, and you get what you pay for. This is why you’ll never see me review a pair of Ferragamo shoes... I cannot recommend them! But these j can!
From what I have gathered C&J Handgrade doesn't fall far from EG now. It has been noticed that the latter's quality has decreased. If you can afford E.G, then go for Vass, G.G (peculiar shape though) or Foster&Son.
Hi Kirby. Informative review. Have you reviewed any Crockett & Jones handgrade shoes? Something like the Lonsdale or Audley is about half the price of the EG Chelsea. I wanted to understand the differences in the shoe quality relative to the price difference. Would the EG Chelsea be significantly different to a C&J handgrade oxford given its double the price? Thanks.
These are probably the second best black cap-toe Oxford you can buy after the John Lobb Philip ii’s. You will spend a little more but since it’s the prestige line you will get complimentary lasted shoe trees.
better leather quality better quality control more hand finishing. better leather sole and better finishing. better build quality. better insole brand name i own C&J HALLAM and the EG Galway. the EG is more comfortable and the aging is slightly nice.
We need a head-to-head match-up. Carmina Cordovan Captoe Oxford [black] vs. Edward Green Captoe Oxford [black] seen here. Price is around $750 for Carmina Cordovan, and the Edward Green is around $1,300 [USD]. Which is the better value based on price to quality of craftsmanship and longevity.

Edward Green shoes are the pinnacle of English RTW footwear. They are expensive, but that goes with the quality so it is better to consider them an investment for the long term.
Thank you, I really enjoy your videos, informative and entertaining at the same time. I wish you could review the argentum handwelted series from Antonio Meccariello. From what I’ve seen, I think their quality is exceptional with reasonable price.

That is a beautiful shoe, but I don't share the opinion that it is the most versatile. There are occasions that only a black cap toe will suffice. However, it quickly looks out of place once you venture beyond a dark worded suit.
Kirby excellent video. One question. Why would you add a rtw black cap toe Oxford when you already have several bespoke options in the collection? It seems like a step back in term of fit
rooierakker23 This isn’t a personal shoe... just a review. But if I were going to add a RTW one, I’d definitely consider EG. Their Top Shelf stuff is mind-blowing.

Thanks for nice videos all the time. I have a question. I wear AE Fifth Avenue US 8.5E and the size and width is perfect for me. What size and width is equivalent for the shoes in the video if the size and width is based on Edward Green official website size choice?
Kirby, I found a pair of EG on eBay, but I cannot figure out how to tell if they are genuine. I also couldn’t figure out how to DM you through the mobile youtube ap. How can I get your guidance to make sure I am making a smart buy?
Hi Kirby, great video! A little off topic, how come english derby shoes never have space between the uppers when tied compared with a pair of US made bluchers where there is always seem to be space between the uppers??
wavelandavenue1 Probably because there made properly. There should always be a little less than 1/4 inch gap between laces, even with oxfords, to allow the shoes to be tightened additionally, should it become necessary. If the facings of the laces touch, it is impossible to further tighten the shoes.
Good question. Personally I am not sure I find black the most versatile, even though I live in NYC. Oxblood) or dark brown with a rich shine using black polish in my view are the most versatile (across mid-grey or navy suits or chinos). I would not wear these with jeans. Oxblood cap-toes are surprisingly versatile.
If you wear a suit in a city or built up town then buy black Dark Brown 2nd! Probably a burgundy after that if you don’t need more black Oxfords! I wouldn’t wear the Oxford with jeans though!
In what world is a black captoe oxford versatile? I own a set of EG Chelseas. They're wonderful, but they are a ~dress~ shoe. A dark brown semi-brogue or Adelaide would probably be the most versatile shoe-followed by brown NSTs and an elegant set of chukkas.
I believe he’s talking about A) the color and B) it’s always better to be over dressed than underdressed. Technically you could wear them with everything from a suit to a pair of jeans. Wouldn’t be an ugly look just wouldn’t match in terms of formality.
I was surprised to hear you say that these can be worn with jeans. I can't imagine how these could be worn even with chinos, let alone jeans. They're ideal to be worn with a dark suit or a tuxedo.
