I actully tightened it with both a impact hammer and torqe wrench. But you got a good point. Wish I saw it before hand but nothing bad happend to my car just yet.
I recently did a wheel bearing and wheel hub replacement on my vehicle. Once i had everything else torqued down all that was left was to tighten down the axel nut, and i only screwed it in with my hand while in the air. I then lowered it with the wheels on the ground since i was told to torque when car is touching the ground. Was i supposed to use an impact gun to tighten in air first, then torque with wrench when on ground? And should i be concerned if my vehicle is unsafe to drive or if it’s dangerous since i did it wrong?
I have asked several people if it was possible to over torque an axle nut to the point of damaging the CV. Everyone told me not possible(yet I still had a hunch they were wrong) thank you for this!
my friend is a mechanic, and he used the gun to tighten it while up on the jack and he ruined the other end of the axle joint that connects to the transmission.
@@giveme10feet I noticed a clonking sound after. Nothing visible. and it only clonks when moving forward slowly and braking. The Brakes worked but feels like the rim was loose but it wasnt.
Tripod joints at each end of the cv axle have needle bearings in them to allow articular rotation. Allowing the will to spin as it goes up and down unevenly at each end of the cv axle but not stop rotating while giving power to the wheel.
I'm Not Rich enough for a torque wrench that goes to 207 ft pound .I Cranked mine down with an impact gun .Then I pointed at it and said " TRUMP 2020 M.A.G.A on my 96 maximal and it has been fine so far ??

@@thestairdoctor was the damage visible or did you notice it once you started driving?

Needle bearings? What needle bearings?

Thanks for the info.
but why they are so tight that you need an impact gun to loosen it?
Rust
Bullshit. @@georgecroney6168

Been driving them on with my high torq for years. Never a problem.
My axle nut is torque to 242 if i cant do it by hand, you bet your ass that im gonna do it with a impact
Yep. All you have to do is learn how to use the tool.
@@mg8718 Don't encourage him to be a lazy hack like you.
no prof (so called) will follow this,
time consuming
Flat out lie, can't fully torque the axle nut down. Can't do damage tightening the axle nut down with an impact
if it's up on the jack while you're using the impact, I think you can damage it.
Learn how to use the impact gun and you wont damage it. I can put those axle nuts on nice and tight with the car still on jackstands. @@thestairdoctor
@@mg8718 i practice on my balls
@@mg8718 You're lazy.
@@gregsmith332 Nope. Im just good. Use my impact gun every time. Perfect!
You can use the impact all day if you have the feel for it thru experience.
