The Edge of Night was SOOOOOO ahead of its time with all the crime stories. 20+ years later many other soaps would go there, but not nearly as well, imho ...
This is when you had REAL WOMAN . Woman who stayed home and took care of house and cooked you a real home meal . Not the feminism of 2 married people both working and never knowing what your doing. Kids were taught math and science and English . Not gay stuff . In Jesus Name
So did my mother. She watched this one, Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow, Secret Storm, Dark Shadows. All these soaps were on in our house in the 60s and 70s. RIP mom. These shows bring back so many memories.... of happier times.
I didn't get to see this soap until the USA network reran some of the episodes from 1980's, I've been watching and am now in July of 1981, and I find the Edge Of Night to be the best daytime soap ever, and I'd add the best 30 minute soap ever too. Wish I had the money to start a classic soap channel, with the exception of today's episodes aired at night, I'd try to run as many soaps and as many episodes I could, and I'd on Saturday Nights either have short lived soaps, or specials (i.e. the two hour premiere of Loving), then on Sunday Nights for 5 hours, I'd want to air a special titled "Soap Stars on Game Shows" (where at least one of the celebrities is a soap panelist, or a soap special like Family Feud. I'd probably start with 1978 to the end on Edge Of Night if I could acquire it.
I really would love to see a lot more of The Edge Of Night . When I was a little girl every afternoon mom made sure thing's we're all done (housework) supper was on so when dad & the rest of the family made it home. Mom had my sister and I lay on the floor or the cough..since it was her time and she would watch all of her soaps. Really great times back then. So yes, if you can find more of the older one that would be awesome . Memories😊
Starts out with a great deal of: 1) cigarette smoking, 2) alcohol, and 3) minutes of explanatory dialogue recapping everything that's happened recently, in case a viewer had missed some episodes and needed to get back up to speed with what had been going on.
The Edge of Night was aired live during its run on CBS from 1956 - 1972; they only saved the shows for 30 days then they 'wiped' them. Too bad they didn't record every episode like Dan Curtis did with Dark Shadows!
And call it that exactly! The BLACK & WHITE CHANNEL. Run soaps and game shows from the 40s, 50s and 60s during the day; and b/w movies and film noirs at night. Perhaps the various film and television archives and collectors would be willing to play ball and share their treasures for such a venture…
God darn it why didn't they save more of these? The trouble with watching these episodes on youtube is you get interested what's going on and you can never find out!!!
Don't know if you would agree, but 50s soaps gave you a suggestion of mayhem without actually showing it. 60s and 70s soaps would show mayhem without gory details; and soaps through the mid 80s and 90s would show all the details of the murder or catastrophe that was taking place. It's why I kind of miss soaps up to the mid 70s, as I like and believe in subtleties in some things...
Paul Taubman was the organist and musical director for THE EDGE OF NIGHT since its April 1956 debut for many years of its run. His organ accompaniment would always reflect and help stage the various moods and/or plots of each scene. He also wore the same hat for THE GUIDING LIGHT, but he did it under a pseudonym so that he wouldn't be accused of conflicting interests, as both soaps ran on the same network. I believe that there were at least two or three other soaps on different networks that he provided music for as well. If I'm not mistaken, the organist Eddie Layton was known for doing the same thing at the same time...
I looked up both the actors that played Peter and Virginia Dalton. They both lived a long time after this. Sadly I wish I knew what happened to them after this trial.
The cigarettes are not only smoked they are used as props. I’m 61 and was born 3 years after this but I remember everyone smoking and drinking on tv. If you were leaving a party the host would offer you a last drink ‘ one for the road’. He or she would be up for libel today if they did that and there was an accident.
I was 3 yrs old and my sister's a 1 yr old a brother who was 8 and oldest sister . great classic. Not today the soap operas are trashy sexual contract and boring.
@@miketype1each Lucille Ball did commercials advertising Camel cigs to help with illness! It was a different time. My parents grew up in the 30s/40s and smoked like chimneys.
I think it's funny to watch the lady while she's telling at the man she's looking off behind him. The she yells if you don't tell so and so I will and runs off. Then he goes to the door and is talking to himself. Look in the background and you can see it's a set , you can see the stage set. Funny

I love how the actress playing Virginia is looking at cue cards. But she plays it so well. Great acting.
That's K.T.Stevens " She also Played Vanessa Printiss on The Young and Restless From 1976 to 1981
she always played strong roles.
No. The actress playing Virginia was Cathleen Cordell.
Such a joy to see these again
Love the nostalgia of this show being in black & white, like I'm a little girl again. I'm guessing they were actually aired live back then.
I so remember this show, even though I was born in 58 I still remember watching it. So cool. That and dark shadows. One of my favorites.

Mike Karr was the only original character of The Edge of Night to last throughout the entire run 1956-1984 and portrayed by three actors.
This episode contained a good many more "directorial choices" in staging and cinematography than the typical soap of the time.
I just loved all that organ and piano music that was featured in these daytime dramas, and on occasion, I would play the theme song on the piano.

A great motivator to get your housework done and get you through all the chores.
You almost forget how society took smoking so casually back then until you come over to a channel like this for a reminder of it, haha.
This is show is what started my mom liking soap operas...
It's great to see these clips because I only watched EON in the 80s. Please post more if you can...thank you!
GL and EDGE not only aited on the same network(CBS), both shows were produced by Proctor and Gamble Productions.

and organ music - was it scored, I wonder, or did the person just improvise?

Actually until 1975.
Dan Curtis did us ds fans an awesome service!
they should have a black&white channel on cable; and play all sorts of shows like this.

This episode was from a 1958 storyline when Mike Karr was investigating crooked politics in Monticello.

Are there a succession of these shows or just isolated ones?

Are any actors or actresses of this soap opera living,or dead?
She sounds like Humphrey Bogart's sister, if he had one. Also, cigarettes for everyone! Yay!

This couple would have been young in the 1930's
A Mannix and a Hawaii Five-O soap opera.
Soap opera's were very popular in the eighties and nineties, after it became lame.
+Jay Company They were very popular in the 50's, 60's and 70's,
+Brooke Hanley i know, just remembered the 80's and 90's because my wife got me hooked then.
Not the '50s, '60s, and '70s soaps? Ever heard of "The Edge Of Night"?
Ever hear of " As The World Turns"?
Ever heard of guiding light?
creepy organ.
+Guillermo Torres That was what made The Edge so good.
+Brooke Hanley Amen...
anybody remember the walls on soap operas that were always black?
Good times 😁
I heard that organ music for these soaps were a call back to the radio dramas. Don't know how true it is
Get a load of all that booze at the beginning of the episode!
Can’t stand seeing all the smoking
Thats how it was..kids were outside
