I was watching and thinking what a great, chatty and personable guy this is. Must be the easiest person to interview, then I realised it was Joey Barton. Difficult to imagine he was one of the most notorious players in the premier league.

And what if a female pundit makes a point about something and then a male pundit agrees with her, before elaborating on it further? Based on my appreciation of the Cobra i’m going to listen to this. Barton’s behaviour (a lot of the time) on a football pitch was disgraceful (i was at QPR at home when he was sent off) but it’s always interesting to listen to normal working classc straight White blokes for a change.

Some of the best football managers ever have never played the game at a high level yet can see things on a football pitch and understand tactics that some of the best players to have played the game simply can't.
BT used an all-woman analysis crew for a match last season on International Women's Day and they were actually better than than the men, as they focused entirely on the game and tactics, rather than joking around and talking guff like a lot of the males ex-pros do (I think we all know who I'm likely referring to here). Like in anything, getting hired and put in front of the camera should be down to how good of a job you can do, that's all that matters. I could care less how many England caps you've had, or how famous you were as a player. Of course, the same goes for how many boxes you tick. I've heard more sense talked by people who've never played the game at a high level than by many of the well-known pundits who are regulars on TV currently. So i get where Barton is coming from regarding tokenism, but disagree that giving these opportunities to a bunch of recognizable ex-players is a good idea; they've always done this and the quality of commentating and analysis is pretty low.
yeah totally agree on tokenism. it's everywhere and discriminates but I don't agree with him that women's football is a different sport and that ex women players aren't qualified to analyse a men's game. there's a few out there that are damn good.
Love how Carl kept his mouth shut when it came to making comparisons between men's and women's boxing! The depth of talent and skill required to compete in the mens boxing vastly outclasses the womens! Just look at some of the former world champions, Shannon Courtney didn't start boxing until her 20's coming from a cold, overweight start. Ebanie Bridges didn't start until just before her 30th birthday! Even in commentating I don't see how you can make a case for the two afformentioned boxers being pundits/ commentators over men, yet they both have!

Great work getting him on Carl - he is divisive (mainly cos of the media portrayal of him I think) but is an intelligent man and a deep thinker- I'm an a Manc (MUFC) but even I like listening to Barton speak. Barton has always been a legend in his own mind. Women should fear him, he has a track record. His "amazingly successful" career in football coaching tells you all a person needs to know about his knowledge on the finer points of the game. He is simply jealous that nobody really wants him as a pundit. If he truly believes in a meritocracy, he should agree that he doesn't merit a job as a football pundit, so many more qualified than him, regardless of gender. Not once have I ever heard Joey Barton take responsibility for anything, yet trouble seems to follow him everywhere at every single club. Even his red card for Newcastle when they were fighting relegation and his red card for QPR on the last day as they played City. I have never heard him take any ownership of it. He has the same attitude to his brother's murder conviction: said he "got in a scrap", then "some idiot pulled out an ice pick and stuck it in someone's head" and he got done for it. What actually happened was Michael Barton and his cousin decided to set upon 3 black teenagers and threatened to stab them (two boys and a girl) who then ran away through a park. They drove round to the other side of the park, hid in the bushes and ambushed them, and killed Anthony Walker with an ice pick a foot and a half long. All this because they were bored and the kids were black.

I condemned him for his comments before this, but he is actually speaking sense and what I believe is the truth. As usual our mass media is omitting a very valid part of his argument.
Surely we can all agree that men competing against women whilst pretending to be women is batshit crazy and shouldn't be happening? Joey has made a measured argument here and i think he was careful not to steam in too hard in light of recent events in the news. We don't want to incite hatred but what's right is right. Fair play to Joey Barton and also to the Cobra for having him on when many wouldn't.

Great work getting him on Carl - he is divisive (mainly cos of the media portrayal of him I think) but is an intelligent man and a deep thinker- I'm an a Manc (MUFC) but even I like listening to Barton speak. He talks truths. Admittedly he is hard to stop talking when he gets on a rant but you managed that well. I enjoyed that nice one pal.

Barton has always been a legend in his own mind. Women should fear him, he has a track record. His "amazingly successful" career in football coaching tells you all a person needs to know about his knowledge on the finer points of the game. He is simply jealous that nobody really wants him as a pundit. If he truly believes in a meritocracy, he should agree that he doesn't merit a job as a football pundit, so many more qualified than him, regardless of gender. I'd pay to see Katie Taylor knocking him all around a boxing ring though.😆

Problem with Joey’s comments is that most of the male pundits are shite. He speaks of a meritocracy, but former players are picked as commentators because of their name and previous accolades, not their speaking ability. So basically he’s just bitter that he can’t get hired as a pundit and is taking it out on all women. What a classy bloke.

And of course if a woman was born a man, they weren’t born a woman, and that’s that. You simply cannot ‘become’ a natural born woman. Because it’s not true. Not once have I ever heard Joey Barton take responsibility for anything, yet trouble seems to follow him everywhere at every single club. Even his red card for Newcastle when they were fighting relegation and his red card for QPR on the last day as they played City. I have never heard him take any ownership of it. I guess it's everyone else, the system etc.
He has the same attitude to his brother's murder conviction: said he "got in a scrap", then "some idiot pulled out an ice pick and stuck it in someone's head" and he got done for it. What actually happened was Michael Barton and his cousin decided to set upon 3 black teenagers and threatened to stab them (two boys and a girl) who then ran away through a park. They drove round to the other side of the park, hid in the bushes and ambushed them, and killed Anthony Walker with an ice pick a foot and a half long. All this because they were bored and the kids were black.
@@DrRepper Yes, you're right, it was a so-called scrap. I certainly don't hold Joey in any accountable for the behaviour of others. He did appeal for his brother to give himself up. But, it was way more than a scrap and should never been seen as anything other than a cowardly murder without a motive.

Listen to him carefully, he said every time on TV there is someone who ticks the D&I box. I agree with him to a certain extent but he is generalising. 15/20 years ago there was a lot less Black pundits (who are within the D&I box) but you see them now. I would say rightly so the likes of Henry; Micah;Evra;Jermaine Jenas. I watched the Piers Morgan show where he was challenge to give specific examples on who isnt qualified.
When we used the so called “merit” in the past we didnt have woman and black people in those positions.What is his idea of merit? How do we measure it? If we put himself against the achievements of some of pundits he was criticising he hasnt achieved much!
Its even worse if we put his achievements against the D&I male pundits he is attacking. Saying that female achievements do not count because they are female its then out of order!
