May 1984. A set of interviews with Jesse "The Body" Ventura, "Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal and The Fabulous Ones, Steve Keirn and Stan Lane promoting a match that never happened.
I loved in the old school promos where one team would walk off camera and the opponents would walk on and talk about them like they weren’t even there!
AWA was a part of my young family life. We had four generations watching on tv together, good times and memories. We could see all the stars almost every week at High school gyms and auditoriums. Went to the Civic center and Minneapolis auditorium too many times to count. So sad when it ended.
So I guess Wally Carbo meant to bring Jesse Ventura's resignation letter to TV, but mistakenly brought Ken Patera's resignation letter (which would've been not long after). Oops! Here's an interesting realization I just had. Jesse Ventura used to always have fun with making up funny variations of his enemies' names. Having grown up in Winnipeg watching the AWA, this probably entertained a young Chris Jericho, who would go on to use that exact same humour in his own promos.
Jesse Ventura Would call Bob Uker "Mr. Basket Ball" instead of Mr. Baseball when Bob showed up at one of the Wrestlemanias. That was a good example on how Ventura could make us laugh!
"When Jesse Ventura first came to us he was called the Nobody and weighed 180 lbs. I taught Jesse how to lift weights and gave him the nickname the Body. I said to start talking like Billy Graham, it'll get over" -Greg Gagne
Of course, within a few weeks Jesse would make his WWF debut and they began the build to a series with Hogan. Unfortunately, that series was cut short when Ventura developed the blood clots and was forced to retire.
The real story is that when he got to the WWF, they saw how bad his singles matches were and switched him over to commentary. Jesse Ventura couldn't really work a match. Earlier in his career, they would cover up his problems by putting him in tag teams. But a Jesse Ventura singles match was usually eight minutes of stalling and two minutes of his opponent either carrying him or selling for him.
Regal was decent in the ring but he lacked charisma and real magnetism. Ventura carried this whole thing. Jesse wasn't the greatest wrestler but his personality and mic skills were awesome.
That's what great wrestling was for the fans ib. Crappy wrestling in a studio. But damn the interviews were great. The wrestling on TV was pretty bad back then The important interviews about seeking revenge were classic We tuned in for the interviews And looked forward to seeing someone get someone to beg for forgiveness and not to hurt him. Heenan was great on the mic. We really want to see him get what he deserved Verne rally screwed things up. When he needed someone as a replacement, we got folks like roger Kirby or the Mongolian stomper. Von Rashkre spent too much there. At the matches, theyd boo him. They were really tired of his act. He should have been released far much sooner. When zumhoffe gotvhis radio stolen and bashed into oblivion by Bobby Heenan. That started a feud between them. Bobby swueaked by and would usually get embaressed by aqBuck.
Jesse only made that challenge because he knew that he was going to To the WWE which was appearing in Saint Paul Minnesota that same night under McMahon's orders ....
The AWA should have said Jessie Ventura jumped ship too The WWF because The WWF cant make there own stars but need to use The AWA stars to make there company. They should have told all the viewers how The WWF were making there roster.

5:58...I know this is fake, but it is funny to hear this dude saying a former Navy Seal that served in Vietnam has a lack of courage and is yellow for not wanting to “wrestle” in the AWA. If I were him, I probably would have toned down that language a bit.
No one sitting at home back then knew anything about Jim George Janos military record. Remember this is pro wrestling. Sgt. Slaughter claimed to be in the Marines but Bob Remus never really was.
He wasn't a Navy Seal on any other basis than a technicality. He never served on a SEAL team and was never trained as a SEAL. He gets to call himself a SEAL because he did the BUDS class and was on an underwater demolition team. He joined up while the Vietnam War was going on, but never served in Vietnam and never saw combat service anywhere.
Steve Regal was trying his best to rise above Jobberhood. He was a decent jobber. He fit in as a jobber. but just didn't have the charisma to rise from curtain jerker into mid-card status
the promoters of the other regions were so dumb and greedy had they all joined together, they couldve destroyed vince instead, they allowed him to pick them off, one at a time
Gagne was a GREAT trainer and excellent promoter. He had three weaknesses. 1. Arrogance. He believed he could make anyone into a big time wrestler so he didn't mind losing talent. 2. He was CHEAP. 3. He was attached to technical wrestling and didn't do enough with his beefcake wrestlers.
Ventura was def big enough, could he just not work? I think he was injury prone, too..he def. couldnt have made it (in the WWF) w the blatant Graham ripoff, but if hed changed his gimmick, he mayve had a good run.
He wasn't interested in working or becoming a better worker. He was a big guy with a mouth and that was enough to make him useful in wrestling. But he could only really do matches where he was in tag teams with a much better worker who could do everything in the ring. Jesse was best just coming into tag matches to do power moves and to have other guys sell for him. On the rare occasions where Jesse got put into singles matches, he looked horrible and got totally exposed. The typical Jesse Ventura singles match was eight minutes of stalling and two minutes of his opponent selling for him or carrying him through basic moves. The best way to use him was as a commentator or a manager which is why the WWF got him out of the ring.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about Regal. He was a good worker and was successful down south before coming to the AWA. I've never heard any other wrestlers say anything bad about Regal.
Not to knock anyone or say one person is right or wrong, but for Regal's tryout matches in the WWF, which aired on Prime Time, Gorilla Monsoon would bring up for both matches that Regal didn't live up to the moniker of "Mr. Electricity." Monsoon got some wisecracks in there over the name but it's been awhile seen I've seen Regal's MSG matches. Needless to say I have to agree with Monsoon.
@@jrupp8853 There were just as many older wrestlers in the WWF and NWA many of the ones you point out went to those promotions. You're just being selective in order to get over a lame joke that you attempted.

I always loved it when Jesse would call Carbo, Caribou.
The Fabulous one's Steve Keirn and Stan Lane were a very good Team..their wars with the Sheepherders are Legendary to those of us that were there
The Sheepherders aka The Bushwackers.
I loved Jessie the Body as a heel commentary. I liked his more neutral unbias announcering at wcw .He was great in wcw

God the AWA was loaded with talent… if Verne had gone national he might have survived

Greg should have taught himself how to lift weights.
Jesse already had a gym. Prb wasn't "weights" he gave him
