  • If the LCD display on your sleep number bed's wireless control display has lost parts of the numbers, faded out, or disappeared completely, then this video will show you how to fix it using just a screwdriver, an eraser, and a hair dryer.

This is a good repair, but you don't need to press on the LCD frame, just the portion of the flat cable that connects to the LCD. For those of you concerned about how hot to make it, I have a hot air station, and set to 250°C, this worked the first time. I used a wood spudger instead of an eraser (just a 1/8" dowel "sharpened" like a flat blade screwdriver on one end). Use the flat part of the wood dowel to press the cable, sort of iron it back and forth.
Great catch on the failed adhesive. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, but I'm sure sleep number company wouldn't. They make it like this with the hope that you will buy new and not repair.

I found this video a couple of years ago and I've had the repair on my to-do list since then. I finally got to it today. I used a heat gun and the whole process only took ten minutes. The numbers on the display are sharp and black again. Thanks very much for figuring this out and sharing the information with everyone!

I cannot thank you enough. I inherited my Select Comfort about a year and a half ago. Previous owners upgraded to a new model, said the only problem with the one we got was the screen hadn’t worked in years on the remote. We’ve been going fine by feel, but always wondered what our sleep numbers are (and which remote controlled which side!) - mystery solved. Thank you for this video, all these years later!

OMG Thank you so much! My son has had this need for I think three months, and he didn’t know what to do. I finally decided to figure it out. But, the remote numbers were all messed up. Life Lesson: Search the Internet for good Samaritans, and they very well may appear. You saved us $50, but even more you taught us to fix a remote! That was 😎. Appreciate you.

Another successful repair here too. Thank you very much for the video. I too let the heat from the hair dryer completely turn the LCD black. I did it twice and pushed on the ribbon cable with an eraser just as shown in the video. Also firmly but carefully pushed on the lcd with the eraser. My numbers are completely back now. Thanks again!

God bless you!! Took me less than 10 minutes, by the way! And I threw caution to the wind, - repeated the procedure 3 times before I closed it back up. Thank you!!! I’m still in awe!!! 😊

Greg: you get the Nobel Prize for Remote Repair. I had contacted Select Comfort and this remote is no longer available (6/8/17). You have to buy a pump and a new remote combo. Thanks to you, I used my hairdryer and a Q-Tip in place of your eraser and on my first try, it fixed the whole thing. Thanks. Ya gotta love RUclips and good folks like you.

Thanks so much for your great tutorial. My controls lost the number display a few years ago and Sleep Number told me I have to buy a new pump to get new controls since I have have an older model where the controls are wired to the pump. It looks like your repair process will work exactly the same for the hard wired controls as it did for your battery operated control. Thanks so much for posting this easy repair.

My old SC (now SN) mattress is so old that I was told by SC that I'd need to buy BOTH a new remote and a new pump--a mere $485!! That is the amount your video saved me, and I am eternally grateful. I did it on the third try. I had taken my mattress all apart due to having to buy a new box spring due to bed bugs. So my mattress wasn't even inflated or inflating. So after expense on expense, I was so pleased I didn't need to buy a new remote. Thank you!!

I watched this video to see if i could get some info that would help me with my issue and you showed me that it is okay to take the remote apart. My 9 volt battery was no longer making contact with the "poles" in the remote. I took the remote apart and slightly stretched them down and forward to get them back in place, just a bit was enough to make contact and save me from sending in close to $60.00 (still under warranty charge)! I'll look you up again when the screen goes dark! Thanks!

Genius! Thanks a lot. It worked on the first try. My remote was just blank screen - called sleep number who tried to sell me another remote and sold me their service eventhough it is still under warranty. Paid $180 to a middle party who came to check bed and had no idea why it was not working. He told me someone from corporate will contact me and replace my bed. No one did. Our remote started to lose segments after a move three years ago and finally went completely blank about a year ago, but it still worked to inflate/deflate. I was just getting ready to purchase a replacement remote online today when I decided to search on whether there was a fix. Was able to see all but the bottom lines of the display after the first try (heating until just the bottom of the display went black then pressing everything. As an electronics technician for over 40 years this fix did not make any sense at all. But after reading the reviews I thought I would give it a try on the wired remotes on my sleep number bed. I had lost all of the display on both. The fix worked perfectly, both remotes now have all of the display again. It doesn't matter how it fixed them, all that matters is that the remotes have their displays again. Thanks.

I have the sleep number wired remote version for my bed. There were no numbers showing up. I tried this and the first time I got just a little line showing up. So I did it again and more showed up. Then I finally did it more and left the heat on for about 20 seconds after the screen went black and it was fixed. But the next AM the far right line was missing. So I did it again and left the heat on for 30 seconds and it has been working ever since. This was a bed I had gotten from my father in law that was in our guest room for over a year and not working. I was doing a Google search to find a replacement remote when I came across this you tube video. I gave it a try and it worked. Thanks Greg.

Can’t thank you enough!!!! Our remote’s screen hasn’t been working for years! So frustrating! While googling to see if they even sold this older style remote anymore, I saw a link to your video. Jackpot!! You made my day! Here’s how it worked for me. My screen turned all black within 15 sec. of heating it. Just for good measure I heated it to black one more time then put it back together. I could only see partial numbers on the screen. Took it apart again, and heated it to total black, again it happened quickly. Then I read a comment from someone that said he focused the heat of the dryer on the ribbon area only, so I tried it. The screen will start to turn black again from the bottom up. I just let it turn 3/4 black before using the eraser to press only on the ribbon area. Next I used my dryer on cold to cool it down before putting it back together. Finally, I lightly rubbed my thumb around the display screen and then gave it a try. It worked!!! I can now see the full display clearly. Thank You again for making this video!! You’ve saved a lot of people a lot of $$ and frustration.

I was told that I would need to buy a new pump to get a new remoter and the prorated cost was 91.61. I used a heat tool for card making. It heats up hot and fast. Remote is working perfectly. Thank you for the tutorial.

ssdtechgirl Thank you for posting this comment. I was wondering if I could use my heat tool instead of a hairdryer.

My wired controller hasn't worked in nearly 10 years. 5 minutes after watching this video my controller is like new. Thank you!

Simple. Effective. Thanks for noting that the display turning black was NOT a problem. Took 10 minutes total. Thank you!

Thank you so much!! I'm 72 and just did this in under 3 minutes. I heated it until the display turned black, applied pressure to the contact points, cooled it down and voila!!! Easy! And to think I've put up with this for 3 years.

WOW! It worked perfectly, took about 5 minutes. Thanks so much for an EXCELLENT instructional video. I am going to try this same approach on a digital thermometer that has done the same thing.

This worked like a charm! You absolutely made my wife's year....OK it is Jan 5..but that is still a good thing...grin. We have gone back and forth with Sleep Number for the past year...needless to say I did not want to buy NEW remotes to replace the remotes we bought to replace the original remotes....
    Thank you

How many times can I say THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I have been very frustrated by our remote doing exactly the same thing - display almost completely gone. I did exactly what you said and buh-bayam, the display is back! I was ready to buy a whole new pump and remote - but now I don't have to do that. Thank you thank you thank you!

Fantastic Fix. Thanks so much for sharing. Sleep Number wanted to charge for not just the remotes, but for a whole compressor unit. You saved me some serious cash... Thanks again.

Our remote hasn't worked for years. Tried this and now it works perfectly! I used the hair dryer until the entire screen turned black and continued for another 30 seconds. Worked on the first try. Thanks!

Thank you for making this video. I repaired my remote display in 10 minutes with your instructions.
Update 11/11/15: I have owned the sleep number bed for 6 months now, and I have had to do this repair on my remote 3 times. So far every time is has worked and brought back the display to full capacity, but I would expect that at some point it isn't going to work and I will need to buy a new remote. Word of caution, after 3 times of taking my remote apart the tabs on the sides that latch the 2 halves together are breaking off. If you need to get into your remote multiple times be careful!

You are a genius!! I am on my second remote (the first was a wired version) and my display had pretty much disappeared. I was down to one single line. After watching your video I went home and had a 'like new' display in just a few minutes. I actually think it took longer to find a small screwdriver than it did to make the repair. Thank you so much for posting this video!!

Thank you so much. At first I wasn't sure it was going to work but I remember you saying that it might take a few times. Worked as advertised!! I feel like I own you money.

You are a miracle worker! This has been bugging us for the last couple years and had digressed to random order button pushing until the screen would light up with one horizontal bar in the number display which would then allow me to adjust as far as I could up or down and then count up by fives for each succeeding push....anyway, this repair recipe has made this husband a hero! Thank you so much for your creativity! God bless you big!
