I agree with a lot of what you have said, and it has taken me many years and so much money to get to the same conclusions. Interestingly, the one that struck me the most was on the topic of color.
There was a point where all my handbags were black, and many of my tops and dresses were black as well. I had a smattering of white, blue, and taupe/beige, but that was all. The main reason for that was because so many influencers at the time were telling me that they were neutrals and therefore the most versatile. I certainly thought so as well, and so bought into that. What I didn't realize was that those colors made me look very serious and morose, and my mood followed suit. Now that I know myself better, I have begun to appreciate color and how they make me smile every time I open my closet. I do agree that it makes my mornings more complicated when I have to get dressed for work or going out, but to me that's also part of the fun and the challenge. It's certainly better than figuring out which specific black top will go with my specific black pants for the day! As you said: if you like all black and neutrals, then more power to you. But color definitely does it for me!

I am the same. When all neutrals become a trend I tried on a few outfits and my mood plummeted and I thought, no no I can’t hack it I need colour, and I invariably add a brightly coloured top or something else.

I am also very intentional with my purchases. I assess what I need each season and make a list. Then I watch for sales and purchase things as needed during friends and family sales etc. I also will not buy anything that needs something else to work in my wardrobe such as a skirt that I don’t have the right shoes for. As a result, I have a small but mighty wardrobe that works for work, play and special occasion. I also make sure to invest in deisgner shoes , belts and bags but never wear more than a couple pieces at one time. Less is more!

Sorry, one more comment . . . 5:25 you are 100% correct that outlets carry lines that are not available in the real stores. These are referred to as “diffusion lines” or “diffusion brands”.
For example, instead of “Michael Kors”, they have “Michael by Michael Kors”
The whole point of Outlets used to be slightly blemished or production overruns. But sometime in the early 2000s there was a noticeable change - outlets started to just carry less-quality items. So you end up not saving money on nice items, but actually paying full price for “diffusion lines” that are marked as if they’re on sale.

    • @SMR218
      @SMR218 5 месяцев назад +1

I think the quality is lower too. Sometimes the tags that have a price then the “sale price” I think it’s fake. Marketing technique. They probably have a few of the good stuff as a bait but maybe 1/4 of what they carry. You end up buying things just because you think you are saving a lot.

Blue and black are my neutrals. I hate beige, it does not exist in my life. I never pay retail. I make a list and only shop on sale or discount. Utility and quality more important than brand. I am comfortable with my own aesthetic and I look at trends to understand what is current and what will fit my needs. I need color in my wardrobe and will always have deep rich tones I can layer.

Hi Eileen such great ideas. I myself got some “rules” but for hand bag buying (usually I buy pre loved). I list them in my note app and I might share them if you all are interested, it’s really long.
    1. If I have a gut feelings that this bag might not be for me or having any niggle about the item, I don’t buy it.
    2. I don’t buy from buyers with lots of bad reviews
    3. I only buy hardy and lux materials, never straw/cotton/nets/rubber/plastic/raffia/suede or bags that I don’t think it will be durable/easily stained
    4. I don’t buy bags that are “too loud” so I feel comfortable using them around people.
    5. I don’t buy bags with overly feminine details decorative bows/permanent tassels/lace/sequins/matelasse/bucket/basket bags/exclusively old lady like bags that has no room for masculine styling options.
    6. For larger bags (larger than 40 cm), I only buy larger bags that are NOT delicate in materials (all leather/easily frayed/hard to upkeep/non-scratched resistance), AND NOT heavy, or light colour/easily stained, or a material that cannot be cleaned/repaired/touched up - preferably canvas or nylon.
    3 I don’t buy delicate or smooth leather/box leather/lamb skin
    4 I don’t buy Fendi
    5 I don’t buy Belenciaga
6 I don’t buy bag with chains or mirrors.
    7 I don’t buy animal prints.
    8 I don’t buy bags that don’t fit my phone+wallet+keys+earbuds
9 I don’t buy bag with skinny straps unless I can replace it with other straps
10 I don’t buy bags that I think it might be fakes (regardless of how real it looks) or unscrupulous behaviours from the sellers (not replying/no authenticity guarantee/no disclosure of flaws/no other verifiable authenticity evidences)
    11. I don’t buy red or purple/violet bags
    12. I don’t buy bag with really very large hardware/prone to scratches
13.I don’t buy bags that has cracked leather/ scratched or cracked canvas, unfixable wear and tear, sticky/tarry pockets, popped stitches, broken hardware, missing parts, unfixable/permanently damaged or poor condition. I only accept signs of well taken care of items such as softening of leather/canvas.
    14. I don’t buy clutches without crossbody
    15. I don’t buy bags that are hard to open/fuzzy openings
    16. I don’t buy bags that will be extremely bulky against body
    17. I don’t buy bags that has shapes that I don’t feel comfortable wearing like trapezoid/vanity bag/cylindrical/tool box/star or heart shape bags. I usually buy only square/regtangles/satchels/messenger/hobo/totes
    18. I don’t buy bags that cannot stand on its own!
    19. I don’t buy bags that has graffiti, printed or screened on images/words/texts (like Supreme/Belenciaga) that may rub, peal, scratched or stained.
    20. I don’t buy exclusively top handle bag without the option of carrying on shoulder (tote)/cross body
    21. I avoid white stitching in bags
    22. I don’t buy bags with bad corners/many hotspots for wear and tears/folded canvas
    23. I don’t buy designer duffle bag/luggage/brief case/oversized bag
    24. I don’t buy bags that have very little picture/close ups
    25. I don’t buy bag that I intrinsically think is NOT a good deal.
It also helps to define my dressing style as well. I’m male, and just turned 30 but I look way underage. So I guess my style is boyish and youthful, pragmatic and humble, casual but with a “twist”.

I was so bad in my 20s. I was buying so many lower tier handbags and shoes to go with different outfits. Now I don’t have any of those handbags. However, I still have lot of my shoes which I only wear like 10-20% of. My style changed a lot too: so there are lot shoes and clothes that I can’t and don’t wear base on my current style.
Very important to be intentional with our purchases and spend our money wisely. I regret wasting so much money, and now space.

Hi Eileen! I have just, recently, started to be conscious about the shopping decisions I make--especially now since I'm seeing the perks of a cohesive wardrobe seeing from your vids. 😊
I love colors (lavender and deep greens) and I try to pair colorful tops with neutral bottoms (camel, black, white). I also have an allowance that I can use monthly or just simply save up until a big purchase.
For rules when shopping for bottoms, I'm still checking which silhouette works for my body type and the length to help me look more sleek.
And recently, a new rule I made for myself is to shift my love for colors in tops to the accessories I buy. This helps me choose more neutral patterns for my tops and more loud, eccentric style for my accessories 😊.

I love the content that you produce. I resonate with rule #5...not matching your small leather goods to your handbags. Its stressful and unnecessary. For example, I love Chloe wallets and card holder's for their design and playful colors. However, I have many LV bags. I just mix and match with what works for my lifestyle. 10:42

  • @MY-kh9hx

Eileen, your pearl earrings are lovely! So much lustre!
I also have some rules, which happen to be similar to yours.
I dislike and will never buy any designer’s costume jewellery. It’s a complete waste of money! Actually the price for a piece of Chanel / Dior / Celine costume jewellery can already buy a top quality seawater pearl. The beauty of a top quality akoya pearl is superb and ever lasting (if taken good care of).
Apart from curating my handbags and clothes, I also curate my jewellery! I have wish list of jewellery which I amend from time to time when preference changes. I save while I wait for the one I really love.
The more items you have already bought, the higher standard you will have for the next purchase. I would rather save up longer for a piece I truly love, instead of buying everything which comes to my attention.
Jewellery and luxury handbags are luxury. Why settle for a piece you don’t love enough?
I am not buying Chanel anymore. It doesn’t excite me and it’s not durable. Boring and subpar quality.

Yes, it helps a lot to be intentional with our shopping (and our non-shopping!)
For me, some things that are strictly NO BUY are:
    1. Earrings that are non 925 silver / plated or solid gold, as I have sensitive ears,
    2. Uncomfortable (and cheap) shoes,
    3. Tops in polyester / cheap wool as they are uncomfortable
    4. Clothes that are not in my “intentional” capsule wardrobe color scheme, namely beige, grey, white, navy, black and my favorite accent colors dark green and mint,
    5. Bags and shoes that are NOT black, tan or white. I buy red pieces very occasionally BUT they have to be pieces that I can imagine going with majority of my wardrobe.
    6. “Goal” pieces eg dresses that will look good if I lose weight, etc.
    7. Purchases that are made out of boredom or for purely “commemorative” reasons, such as to commemorate a birthday or going to a new country.
After instituting these general rules, I’ve enjoyed my purchases a lot more, spent less and reduced clutter in my life.

What’s everyone’s opinion on designer shoes? I still can’t justify the price for something you step on the floor. I have expensive shoes (mostly because they are comfortable), but not at designer price level, and even these I feel sad every time I see a scratch on it. I don’t think I can live with scratches on designer shoes but I’m just drawn to some designs. How do you guys justify for them?

Your videos have a calming effect. Thank you for providing your content in such a genuine, respectful and thoughtful way.
I get carried away by the looks of the bag so I have to really think if the bag would work for me. I have bags that are very beautiful, Chanel mainly, but I dont use them on a daily basis. I sold a few Chanel bags and kept the ones I like the most. They are my favorite when I dress up and I’ll use them for years. For daily bags I like a more casual, more low key look. LV Damier Ebene Speedy is my most used bag. Also my long Champ tote and a Chloe leather tote with no logo.
I don’t follow trends. I don’t but costume jewelry, I don’t think I’ll buy another Chanel at the current price, I only have a few SLGs, no outlets either.
However, I still get very tempted by how beautiful some bags are. For instance the lady Dior in the new toile de jouy in gold is gorgeous but the price is almost 10K! So I pass.
I also sell a bag to help fund a new one. This helped me keep my collection manageable. I have a small walking closet and I plan to keep it that way! No big closet for me!

Anyway, keep up your excellent work!

I'm getting to be the same & I agree with the heels... I broke my ankle 4 years ago so I was elated when I was able to wear them again but the joy was more because it was 'my choice' again rather than it being decided for me. The funny part though is that even though now 'I can' wear them if I want to, I just haven't 'wanted to' in over a year, I just like knowing it's 'my' choice ;) I do have a few bags that are 'pops of color' that I love to use during the wintertime to brighten up my 'winter neutrals'. I've been enjoying your videos, please keep them coming :)

I am very intentional with my shopping as well. I invest in nice quality pieces as much as I can but sometimes I feel a bit desperate looking at my wardrobe. My t-shirts are black or white, as well as my sweaters and pants I have gray, beige and navy as well but some days I really feel like I’m always wearing the same things even though I have no idea of what I would want to wear instead!
It’s easier in the summer months for me to play with shapes and add colors but in the winter time I really feel like I’m ALWAYS wearing the same outfits.
Advice and tips are welcome both for winter and summer wardrobe!!!

    Hi Eileen
I usually plan a day outlet shopping whenever I travel but I also realized I buy just because I came all the way and needed to buy something at the outlet. It turns out may not be something I really adore. Looking back at my wardrobe now, I no longer have those handbags I bought in Bicester. Now if I travel, I would rather go to Vintage or 2nd hand shop that sells Luxury handbags to check out if the handbags that I want is up on shelves. Rather than paying it at retail price in the boutique maybe the Vintage shop sells slightly cheaper. 😂

Hello Eileen, really loved the video you made. I do not have many rules for shopping but I do make a list of items I want to buy and wait for them to go on sale. I now buy items that I really like even it is a bit expensive because I know I will wear that more so in the long run I am saving money. I also have a separate account for personal allowance so I NEVER go into consumer debt to purchase clothes and jewellery and if I run out of money from that account I just stop buying. This allows me to have control on my spending and makes me enjoy shopping a lot more.
