What other disney flims should I do commentaries on?
Have you done Raya and the Last Dragon?
TTTRRRRREEEEAAASUUUREEE PLLLAAAAAAAAANEEEEEEEEET
have you done hunchback of notre dame yet? very dark for a disney film.
Honestly there's quite a few I feel you should check out. Both Frozens, Tangled, Aladdin, Hercules, Beauty And The Beast, Lion King....
Sinbad!
Im Polynesian, and the way they portray the culture in the movie is just too accurate.
I'm Maori/Samoan and It is a bit of culmination of many Polynesian cultures though. But their is alot of overlap in words, traditions, and myths/folklore within Polynesian cultures any way.
They done well to keep it accurate to Polynesia in general for mass audience consumption.
Even the coconut?
POLY!!! 😆 - im Tongan and Cook island :)
@@ZulqarnainAidil yes even the coconut!! 😁
I'm Hawaiian, and I must say, I agree.
The chicken picking up the heart when it landed in front of him wasn't a flaw, in fact picking up whatever stone is right in front of him has been all he's done since the beginning of the movie.
He had one job, and boy did he do it well.
@@sarahobah indeed he did 😂
Chickens eat pebbles to help digest their food. Accurate for HeiHei eating the rock.
I also think the ocean chose her because her selflessness and kindness. At 2 years old, she gave up looking for pretty shells to save a baby sea turtle. Obviously, her character already had the braveness and compassion needed for a very specific job. This is one of my favorite movies ever! I just love every aspect to it.
I definitely agree! I think it's because Te Ka/transformed Te Fiti couldn't be defeated with brute strength, but with compassion.
And also because of her name lmao
As a curly haired person…. Who’s hair is a similar texture as Moana ….I agree with Ange’s comments on the stages of drying in this movie…. Love it!!!!!! The work they did to try and properly do animated curly …. I’m here for it
I KNOW! My hair is straightish; half Irish half Filipina. My hair gets wavy when wet. After swimming in the ocean and my hair dries in the beauuutiful Filipino sun, my hair wafts in the sea breeze exactly like Moana's. During the movie I found myself watching her hair, wanting to like gently brush it out like my aunties try to do to me. Animators = succeeded level 5,000.
They also kicked @ss with Mirabel's swishy hefty skirt in Encanto.
@@explodingplant2 yeh! I get that. One side is Scottish/British and the other is Jamaican/multiracial from that region and so my hair is loop-ta-loop curly black hair that’s like Moana or Merida (just to be clear I have Black hair not read just hair textured) this representation is important
@@jessm.porthos What the Hell are you talking about? And what ''representation''? And what's the difference between hair 'type' and 'texture' except when speaking about hair color/size? (hair types are in fact hair textures)
Moana has wavy hair and the animation was great. That's the only thing ''important''.
Im Hispanic (indigenous) and white mixed and my hair looks just like hers so it's nice to see a disney princess with hair like mine!
the thing about Te'Fiti as Te'Ka is she still has the power of creation. Lava flowing into water over enough time will create new islands. But without the heart the power was uncontrolled and destructive
the ocean couldn't return the heart to Te'Ka though because Te'Ka can't touch the water, hence why it chose Moana
That's a beautiful interpretation
That last ‘I AM MOANAAAA!!!’ is SO triumphant, for some reason it makes me tear up every time I hear it
no but for real, i weep every time!!!
Same
Cute story. Dwayne Johnson’s little girl loved Moana but refused to believe he was Maui. He even sang her the Thank You song to convince her but she wasn’t buying it. There’s lots of great behind the scenes stuff in the making of Moana video.
Don’t answer it or go on telegram it’s a scam/ hack/ trying to get personal info
She still doesn’t believe he’s Maui. 😂
Interesting cultural thing I haven’t seen many people mention which I feel brings even more depth and meaning into the movie (I’m not even sure they did it on purpose but I would guess they would have) is when Moana puts her head and nose to Te Kā. Here in Māori culture, I’m not sure if they have something similar in other Polynesian cultures, but it’s something called a hongi, which is a traditional Māori greeting. It’s the pressing of your nose and forehead with another and ha (breath of life) is exchanged and intermingled. It’s a symbol of sharing of breath, of unity, an acknowledging the life within another person.
So when I see this movie I don’t just see a gentle gesture of trust, putting her face close enough to touch Te Kā, I see it as Moana recognising the life within TeKā and acknowledging it, it’s her saying basically I see you (Tena koe) and I know you. Which is exactly the words she is singing… This is not who you are, you know who you are and then presses their noses together saying You are known, and alive and acknowledged and guys this movie is really beautiful.
And I keep thinking they must have done it as an accident because I’m not sure why anyone is not talking more about it. When I watch the hongi is the climax of the story for me it’s when Moana truly sees Te Fiti, and it’s so beautiful. Just acknowledging who Te fiti really is under there. Maybe it just hold more significance also being from New Zealand and growing up seeing the different situations Hongis can be used in. Sometimes as just a casual hi bro or it can be a healing powerful symbol, in this movie it’s used as the latter and it’s powerful man and that she did that in the mitst of that song, gosh I tear up every time. It’s just beautiful!
I’ve noticed the hongi too. And that had me tear up a little. The little things that mean so much. Chute brother.
That's a beautiful thing to know, thank you for sharing.
There are no accidents...
I’m fairly certain it was on purpose. When Lin Manuel does research, he does *research.* Plus I somewhat remember learning this factoid in one of the behind the scene videos.
Its WideSpread Amongst Polynesians and This Movie Depicted It Story and Everything Based Upon POLYNESIA you do know that right???
The reason the grandmother died right after giving the Heart to Moana is perfectly explainable.
The Heart was keeping her alive. She also knew that the moment she would let go of it, her time would come.
But she also trusted Moana, enough to sacrifice her life so she could accomplish her mission.
"Hei Hei would never have gotten that stone."
He wasn't trying to save the stone, he was trying to eat it... just like he did with the random rock at the start of the movie.
He was born to save the stone. Everything else was practice.
Second time he saved the stone, first time was to eat it 🥹🥹
I saw Moana at the theaters and when it was over I was sobbing so hard. All the kids wore happily leaving while I was hiding my face in shame hahahaha
Same!
I would've loved to see this in the theaters!
Fun fact about newborn turtle: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own.
This scene at the beginning is essentially how Moanas journey ends up going out on the ocean. She may have been pointed in the right direction, but ultimately she had to do it on her own.
Exactly. The struggle of the journey is what gives you the strength and skills to then succeed.
I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.
Moana's grandmother was voiced by the same actress who played the head of security for Jeff Goldblum's character, The GameMaster, in Thor: Ragnarock. Knowing that and rewatching her scenes make them extra entertaining with how different the characters are.
@@susanzenonian5085 I'm so usually detail oriented, but I never knew that. That is really interesting.
9:18 Fun fact: this is actually true! Polynesians DID stop wayfinding for a period of time, and nobody knows why.
I've always wondered why they made it seem like the pig was gonna be Moana's animal sidekick but it ended up being the chicken 🤔
It was cut very last minute becaise they fell that pua was not bringing anything to the relationships. Origibslly hei hei was much smarter but they dumbed him down for comedy and a foil for moanas plans
@@rebeccagibbs4128 🤦♀️
So happy to see your reaction to this movie. It has a special place in my heart. When my little daughter was very sick and in the hospital, Moana got us through a lot of tough times. Thank you!
Fun fact: Hei Hei is voiced by Alan Tudyk (Wash from Firefly/Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball/Sonny from I, Robot)
Fun fact 2: Auli'i Cravalho was tricked into thinking she'd gotten through to the next round of auditions but they had actually called her to offer her the part. They asked her to do some ad lib and to try and sound happy, to imagine they'd told her she had the part. They then told her it wasn't pretend.
tudyk was also the robot in Star wars Rogue one...
@@Metzwerg74 Alan Tudyk has an extensive resume and it's worth watching all of it, just because he always gives his 100%, even if it's just a chicken/tucan (Encanto), the Duke of Wessleton (Frozen), a naive stablehand (A Knight's Tale), or a confused country boy (Tucker and Dale vs Evil.)
@@susanzenonian5085 fun fact: Alan Tudyk was in Zootopia as a weasel and Nick nicknames him Wessle. 😂
Moana is still one of my favourite animated movies ever. It's so beautiful.
omg sammeee!! >.
Fun Fact: This was directed by Musker & Clements, who also directed: The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, & Princess and the Frog.
Sadly Moana was their last movie before they retired.
But damn what a movie to go out on.
Moana is truly a wonderful role model for little girls, and I loved seeing so many dress up as her for Halloween after this came out!
i remember the first time i watched this i was like a senior in high school and my friends and i barely paid attention and just joked the whole time, now i absolutely love this movie and it’s probably one of my favorite disney films ever
When my ancestors arrived in Aotearoa there was an eagle here with a ten foot wing span. It used to eat large birds and even small children. Maui transforming into one makes perfect sense in māori storytelling
Saw this in theaters. Every frame is a work of art. It's amazing.
Ang: Why won't her father let her sail into the open, endless ocean?
Me: ... that's why
Heihei being so dumb he eats rocks being the reason he saves the heart at the end is too good 🤣
Alan Tudyk on voicing Heyhey
"... I went to Juliard."
The first time I watched this and heard "You're Welcome," it blew me away with how good of a singer The Rock is.
Also I don't know if it's been said yet, but you were thinking of The People's Eyebrow for the eyebrow raise that he does.
Sigh... Spock did the People's Eyebrow first... 😝
When the karanga was called before the movie started i cried. How amazing it was see our little brown skinned tamariki see them selves and a representation of our culture on screen
Moana is one of those movies you can just watch forever it's so gooood
So happy and grateful you're doing more animated movie reactions on this channel, outside of the collabs you do with TimotheeReacts.
Overall, I enjoy this film from the music, the performances of Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, the representation of the Polynesian/South Pacific Islands and Moana is a very relatable heroine, along with the dynamic she has with Maui and her pets (Pua and Hei Hei).
Hopefully you get to react to the other Disney Animated Films such as _Frozen, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph,_ and _Raya and the Last Dragon_ soon.
9:57 the heart was keeping her alive this whole time. Hence why she passes away not long after giving it to Moana.
The part where the grandma says, "I never should have put so much on your shoulders. If you are ready to go home, I will be with you." hit me so freaking hard. I feel like that's something a lot of kids really needed from their parents. To know that it's okay to fall short of expectations. That you are still loved and worthy of love and your family loves you no matter what happens. That's so much more meaningful and makes her choice to keep going all the more empowering, because she knew she could deny it if she needed to. She knew she could go home and her family would still welcome her with open arms. There's a lot of kids who feel like if they don't succeed, then they aren't worthy of love. And I love that this movie says, 'no'. The healthy and truest version of family is people who will love and accept you whether you succeed or fail, they'll be there for you every time.
It's so powerful and beautiful and a reminder of what healthy family relationships really look like.
I love this movie for that scene more than pretty much any other Disney film.
And Chief Tui is voiced by Boba Fett!
(Temuera Morrison)
And Alan Tudyk as... the chicken. Master thespian
I get goosebumbs & emotion EVERY TIME I watch this movie (or commentaries about it). Just love it, and your reaction was 10/10 in my book 💜
LOL the hit marker on Maui's head when he got headshot by the heart was *chefs kiss* perfect
These songs were written from lin manuel Maranda. One of the greatest song writers of all time, If you like musicals I’d love to see you react to Hamilton! (It’s on Disney +) lin Manuel created it and plays the lead. I think you’d really love it!
19:19 Sharkie's looking at Angelina like... "What? What Do You Want?!!! Don't Bother Me" 😂😂😂
Probably the most underrated Disney film, imo. I spent almost 7 years living on Oahu and this movie instantly took me back to that happy time.
It's hard for me to choose which is my favorite movie now (between this, Brave, and Beauty and the Beast). Also think the music was way better than Frozen.
Fun fact: traditional wayfinding is still practiced even today!
You struggling to raise your eyebrow like The Rock was too much for me 😭🤣😂
what i love about this movie is that essentially at the end, i interpret it to say "you are not your trauma/abuse". i mean moana even says in the song "they have stolen the heart from inside you. but this does not define you. this is not who you are. you know who you are." and i love that
I recently watched Heartbreak High on Netflix, and was pleasantly surprised to see the actress who voices Moana's grandma playing the school principal in that show. This movie has a really great cast in addition to the two main leads, many of whom have a lot of credits to their name. They did a great job with this film.
Samoan here🙋♀️ growing up this was the first representation on big screen I saw of myself, my culture, my people. I can still remember the first time watching this movie with my cousins, 7 years old. Mini me was so happy
Moana in my native language (maori) means “ocean.” 😊
Poly fo sho braddah, same in Kanaka Maoli
Can I just mention that the crab materializes eyelashes when he mocks Moana with a girlie voice and they disappear as soon as he gets back to his normal speaking voice.
18:05
This used to be my little cousins fav film and she used to make me watch it with her all the time! Still love it though 😂 Loved your commentary Ange
In Disney's "Fantasia 2000," one of the sequences was "The Firebird," which featured a volcanic eruption, followed by a magical re-birth of green plant life. At that time, they were using hand-drawn animation in conjunction with computer-generated animation. It's one of my favorite sequences of that whole collection. (Rhapsody in Blue with Hirschfeld-style characters is my favorite.) The re-birth of TeFiti's island echoes much of the same imagery. But this time they had way better computer animation techniques at their disposal. Both sequences are breathtakingly beautiful, IMO.
I'd be interested to see you react to "Fantasia 2000," if you get around to it.
I love how Moana pulls a Moses close to the end of the movie, when the ocean parts for her ❤😂😂😂❤❤❤
One of the best modern Disney movies!
the light blue lights looks fine though, at least for me, it looks calming HAHAHAHAH
The fact that this missed out on best animated feature oscar is a travesty...
Glad you liked her hair, it took them six years to come up with a way to do the hair for Tangled. They took what they learned from Tangled and another two to three years to get her hair right
Moana (Auli'i Carvalho) was barely 16 when she did this role...
18:00 That's Schafrillas Productions logo...Tamatoa! Check out his other videos!
The water and environment FX are so realistic and stunning too
i love your reaction videos 🥰
Lin Manuel Miranda's music in any movie is just 😩
Fun fact: Dwayne still tries to tell his daughter he played the voice of Maui but his daughter still doesn’t believe him
13:36 Thank you for the laugh, Trees. Didn't see that one coming.
16:29 Esmeralda be like, “Bitch where’s my crown?”
Moana always makes me cry because her grandma reminds me of my mom, and since my mom died there has been so many times I wish she could come back for even a minute to give me advice.
Omg Ang, I missed your video looks like I’ll be watching it now, also not you struggling to pick good lighting in the intro 😂, this movie was amazing sad you fell asleep 😂, I love your hair by the way this movie reminds me of turning red where it has the same message of you shouldn’t follow someone else’s path you should follow your own and yeah I feel like that’s very empowering also I want a turtle after rewatching this movie 😂
Also I was obsessed with water after this movie, an ocean is an ocean 😂
Hope you and your family have an amazing day!
Ang: "I have a tattoo..." *doesn't show tattoo*
Me: guess I have to watch all her videos till I see it.
One of my fav princess movies along with tangled
Fun fact: Hei Hei is voiced by the illustrious Alan Tudyk 😎
Moana has a lot of similarities to BIONICLE with their themes
Her mom standing in the door way just before she leaves was such a powerful scene for me, and you had no reaction to it at all 😂
I know there's a Sundrop Flower from Tangled easter egg somewhere on that movie.
Te Fitis island is based on a real one, and I can confirm it DOES look like a woman lying on her side.
Fun fact: Dwayne The Rock Johnson has confirmed that Disney is making a live-action Moana. And The Rock will be playing Maui
The ocean chose Moana because of her HUMANITY.
Maui couldn’t do it, he's shoot first ask questions later.
The ocean couldn’t do it because water hurts Te Ka.
8:24 - favourite line in the movie, and possibly the explanation for why we love grandma so much... :D
It's the "peoples' eyebrow."
I never seen this movie until a year ago when I began therpay so this movie really hit me on such an emotional level.
Exactly Shapeshifting into animals are awesome🐾
Gurl! I love the vibe of your reactions! Why did it take me so long to get here?
Hey hey is the best character of all time
moana is one of my favourite movies! it’s so deep and touching but also very funny!
Love moana so much i remember i watched it twice in a row the first time i saw it
Totally out of left field but I’ve got to watch you react to the movie Airplane. You make me laugh so much my face hurts.
Love this movie
Ange singing is just one more reason to love her
LMFAO!! that was perfect timing a bied flew into my window then a second later the old windoes shut down sound played at 14:04🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would love if you did a frozen commentary
Ive been watching al your videos. These are great
Is it just me or was this the cutest way of saying grandma 29:12 😂😂😂
I'm poly, and part of my culture is that we believe creation and destruction are one in the same, the being on different sides of a coin. Most of our islands were created with volcanoes (destruction) on the flip side volcanic soil is one of the most fertile soils for life (creation)
Fun fact: in a lot of Polynesian cultures Moana literally means ocean
Great reaction! What an amazing movie!
my #1 disney comfort movie 😭😭
Thats how fear and phobia forms, when your actions cause directly or indirectly, someone’s death you never want to be the person to recreate over and over. It’s like how to train your dragon, the father didn’t want to listen to hiccup because he thought he lost his wife to dragons. His hate and fear for dragons were huge and took it out on Hiccup who tried to understand dragons.
Great commentary, angelina
The People's Eyebrow
(back in his wrestling days)
I love the 6 movies but 3 is just the best for me, the way it just wrapped everything up was perfection
Yes to a Frozen commentary Ange. If I’m recalling correctly, you’ve only ever uploaded a commentary to the second one. I know you’d give Hans the elbow if you could
As for other Disney movies, might I suggest:
-Mulan
-The Parent Trap (1998)
-The Princess Diaries
-Cheetah Girls
-Raya and the Last Dragon
When i had long hair, i wanted to be Moana
wait -
i mean this is my favorite disney movie love it!!! also hei hei is my spirit animal
this soundtrack💗💗 also if anything frozen 2 commentary would be great!!!
9:26 😂 your reactions are so validating throughout the entire movie.
I think it mean having confidence in your self believing in your Dreams I didn’t know tattoo I always want to get a tattoo
Fun Fact: there WAS an old plot line in this movie where Hei Hei was going to turn out to be actually a Wind God [to counter the Sea God that was the ocean] so to mirror Maui, but the test audiences thought having TWO hyper-aware animal companions would be too much, so they took the sub-plot out of the storyline; however, they couldn't remove all the details leading up to this reveal, which is why whenever Hei Hei is on screen, he's subtly hinting at the directions to go, or coincidentally helping out.
