I saw so much waste, when my wife at the time worked for the USDA, and would talk about all the money they spend just so they don't loose it in the next fiscal year. She would also take business trips to trainings, but not the ones near our home, but those across the nation in DC, and Orlando.

I like thinking of the U.S. as a "sugar uncle". They certainly do give out the money to their political favorites. And how does it end? To thunderous applause! Yep, sounds about right.
While it is easy to blame our elected officials for mishandling money (because they do), the problem is not really with them. We know that politicians will say and do just about anything to be re-elected and self-interest is almost always going to win out over altruism or common sense. The problem is with voters that never look at what elected officials do and hold them to account. Also, we, as a nation, have become so addicted to consuming that ideas like simplicity, denied gratification, planning, and living within our means seem hokey and (for some) evil. Look around at your life and start asking yourself a difficult question. Do I really need this? Or my personal favorite 'Will getting this actually make me happier and more content in my life?' Look at your city and state government. Do my elected officials actual work for the best interests of my city or state? Or how about just 'What are my elected officials doing?' You don't have to turn into an investigative reporter or spend tons of time, all of the info is freely and easily available. They count on the laziness of the average voter and, so far, they have not been disappointed.

In Illinois, every time you get a raise the government decides to dick with the taxes and put you right back where you were before the raise. They just keep taking any windfall you might have and blow it on some BS in Chicago.
I get the joke about the covid relief being used to hire parking officers, but that was probably a win as far as returns go. The people they hire pay taxes, both income and sales. Plus the tickets generate revenue. D.C probably got all of that 2.5m back and then some.
My boss at a public utility wanted me to include him whenever I sent my crew to out of town technical training even though he knew nothing about the job and was just a paper pusher. So I stopped sending my crew to technical training and instead brought the instructors on site. He was no longer interested in getting the training

My direct-hire colleagues would literally claim they couldn't learn any new processes or procedures unless they were sent to an "offsite" (Vegas, Palm Desert, etc.) for a week. And they got it. The gravy train ran all night long.
