  • When the detectives investigate the murder of a young gymnast, it reveals the gymnasts ties to their benefactor, and the unhealthy competition it creates.
Season 2, Episode 9 'Pixies': When a young gymnast is found dead, her world-renowned coach (guest star Philip Casnoff) becomes a prime suspect as his rigorous demands of his students are discovered. Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) soon find that the girls also vie for the attention of a wealthy benefactor (guest star Armand Schultz) whose interest in the young athletes does not appear to be purely philanthropic.

The strict gymnastics teacher was played by Philip Casnoff his character Ilya Korska who was Bulgarian but in real life Philip Casnoff is American and in The Simpsons the gymnastics teacher Lugash was from Hungarian and he is based on a real life gymnastics teacher Bela Karolyi who is part Hungarian and Romanian.

There's a scene where Munch & Fin interview an old woman in a nearby apartment and he tells her "You saw it or heard it,and if you don't speak up" followed by something in (I think) Greek. The woman fearfully asks "You would curse me?" to which he replies "Every day"
I've been trying to translate his threat for years and even Greek friends of mine can't figure it out.
The reasons I think it's Greek is because as they're leaving Fin says "You talking Greek, you full of suprises" and the woman says "My Grandfather lived to be 105, on Ouzo and silence" (Ouzo being a popular aperitif in Greece).

This episode really points out the struggles that athletes put themselves through from very early on in life to become great. Constant training, dieting, self-induced vomiting, dating much older people. You really gotta show respect to these kids 'cause they give up their entire lives to win.

"The struggles they put themselves through"? You mean the torture that the adults in their life force them to do. Young athletes like this are manipulated, used, and made to feel worthless unless they can perform. They get body issues, intimacy issues, work-life balance issues, and for what? Their parents to have something to brag about? Their coach to recruit more clients? This cycle takes in young girls who are passionate about a sport and spits out damaged, traumatized young women. They're not "giving" anything up, it's being taken from them. They deserve respect in as much as every human being deserves respect, but even more than that, they deserve pity, and compassion, and someone to fight for them. To say we should respect them for what adults do to them valorizes their suffering, romanticizes the awful things that happen to them, and suggests that the athletic achievements they get as a result are somehow worth the abuse. It's honestly an abhorrent mindset to have and I'd hate to meet anyone who thinks like you in real life.

Another reason why I don’t do sports or competitions. Sometimes it clouds your judgement by competitive spirit; others is envy towards one’s teammates and their talents. When the coach acted like playing with the pains to achieve trophies. The human willingness is found in so many people, but the coach wanted his team to win. No matter the cause!
If I were judge, I’d put the coach in prison for pushing his team too far for too high. It is his fault. Along with the parents who did love their kids like real parents do.
