  • For as long as there have been organized governments, there have been people trying to overthrow them. But no matter the cause or outcome, all revolutions begin here.

This is a fascinating video on the literal political geography of states, cities and communities, and the power which the geography can give people on both sides.

When Melbourne, Australia was having its city streets first laid out, the governor explicitly asked the town planner to not include any public squares because he didn't want "democracy to be promoted".

I think what most people should realise is that many revolutions can be unfair and without democracy, remember just because you believe in it doesn't mean it's right.

+TopicJumper any revolution if it's not participated in by the majority

    • @Exxcessivve

+TopicJumper if you're viewing it from a Marxist perspective yeah. But a revolution is the removal of one system and the replacement of it with another, which can be done without the majority like the October Revolution. I suppose it would be pretty hard to get 50% of a polity's populace to participate in an uprising though. Maybe you could say revolutions can almost never be fully democratic

+Daniel R should mention that I acknowledge the role of the populace in creating a climate fit for the Bolshevik overthrow

Fascinating video! I never realized the power and significance a public square can have.

This video is forgetting a very fundamental reason for the square to be so important in a protest. The strategical value of the square in a military sense. The square is a large space where a lot of peoples can gather making it much harder for the assailants (the governmental forces in this case) to dislodge them since they can only come in smaller numbers to oppose them. The buildings around are a natural fortification and impede any deployment of large forces. AND since these places tend to be normally used as a heart of the city's circulation you can jam it by occupying it. In ancient times (namely from the moment we started to form large enough settlements to approximately the mid 1800) the square was built as the first part of a settlement. It's use was commercial and social but also was used as defensive position in case of attacks instead of the walls. The whole city planing was based on the main square, circulation, worship, government, commerce and defense, all was done in the square. Since the cities sprawls still mostly use the same streets and open spaces as in the origins it still have, most of the time the function of heart, attack the heart you kill the beast.

+Disko H In theory one thing could still happen for now, peoples rebel, lots get killed, military change camp partly and the oppose government openly, US goes boom. In 20 years robots will have replaced probably half the forces, they will only need the commander in chief to use a portable computer and order to take the whole country hostage... then it will be completely hopeless but for now it is still isn't completely impossible for protests to get a Pyrrhic victory.

***** I don't claim it's probable but it's possible. You know the military is still citizens of the same country, they could turn against their leaders if given the order to murder the population. It isn't that easy to murder your owns. As for scifi, guilty, I'm writing some :P
