My company gave us bald cypress saplings to plant for earth day and I loked the tree up and seems that people really like it as a bonsai. So now I am getting into bonsai! Got it in a pot for my office and doing research on what I need to do now!
Bald cypress is my next bonsai project.
An awesome tree for bonsai!!! The Larch of the South!
Have you ever heard of Golden larch? It's not a true larch. We are at the top of its hardyness zone.
It sure is!
Bald Cypress is my favorite tree!!
I really in joy your content
Would love to see an update on that cypress whip that you made into the dramatic cascade and hung from the ceiling in your greenhouse a while back. It was such a cool design!
That one is coming up:)
Hey guys great video as always! Great info
Thanks Jerome. Repotting mine next week. Thanks, keep growing
Excited for the giveaway.
Thanks for this informative video. I love my Bald Cypress! I bought it in the Spring of 2019 at my local cooperative extensions' master gardeners plant sale. It was a small tree in a 1 trade gallon pot. It is now Spring of 2023, and it's in a 5 gallon. It's nearly 6 feet tall, and the base of the trunk is heavily fluted, and about 4 inches across. I keep the 5 gallon inside of a keg tub filled with water. I'm in southeast NC, zone 8a. I haven't done any work on it yet, I'm just allowing it to continue to grow for now. It did get blown off the table it was on when young, and the top third snapped off. A new leader formed, and continued to grow taller. Gorgeous tree!
I didn't know much about the cypress and hopefully build up my collection to one one day
Bald cypress is my favorite tree in Florida, so much character!
The Bald Cypress is very intriguing to me. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for the great details on how to keep a bald cypress. Thanks!

Nice Video!
Love Bald Cypress. Live in Central Fl and have about 10 of them. As always thanks for the content.
I would love to collect a BC yamadori one day!
I live in Arkansas surrounded by bald cypress along black river they are beautiful
Looks like a very interesting species! Will look for one here in UK!
By the way, your specimen is gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
Nice video nice bonsai tree thanks jarom
I bought a bald cypress last year from a nursery. I did a trunk chop towards the end of winter (early/mid Feb) and it survived the winter in Maryland with ZERO issues, however now that spring has come it shot out about 700 new buds from the trunk. It's almost overwhelming to know where to start. I've been keeping trees for about 2 years, so I don't have the most experience, and zero experience with bald cypress. If anyone has suggestions or videos on where to start with B.C. bonsai training I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!
Loved your video and absolutely none of my favorite trees. I am in NC in zone 7B. I am about to buy a 5 feet tall tree from Lowe’s and wondering if it is too late to repot it now or should I wait till early summer after the first growth has hardened?

Giveaway entry 😅❤
Great info. There are 5 reasons I love my bald cypress pre-bonsai.
1. I grow it in a pot, but with a bowl under it, so it can sit in water. I change the water daily.
2. The leaves change colors. It’s almost poetic.
3. It’s hardy here in Florida.
4. It can handle hot summers.
5. It looks old after a few years of training.
(Edit: You actually said everything I did lol)
😂😂😂
One of my favorites as well. I live in Ojai California so I don’t have one. Is anyone willing to trade? I’ve got a bunch of Olive trees
I've wanted one for a while. I was working in south Florida at a water treatment plant some years ago, and I was looking, but, nope. I have a Dawn Redwood, which is a cousin: have you any comments about that?
If you get an arborday foundation membership (as little as 1 time $10) you can get 10 bald cypress saplings sent to you. I just ordered mine along with some live oaks. The trees offered depends on where u live and the trees native regions, but im in central fl, so id think you'd be able to get the same offerings.
Deciduous conifers like bald cypress are so interesting
Can the softwood side shoots develop into actual shoots and harden off, when you cut back the main shoot or branch that they are on? Or are they just leaves?
Beautiful trees. I would love to be the caretaker of one.
Could you grow bald cypress in the tropics?
Yes, that is where they naturally grow.
Do the cuttings propagate well?
I have not had any luck with cuttings.
My favorite tree species. They love Northern Indiana, I've got big plans for one I've had in the ground for 5yrs, almost ready for the first trunk chop, it'll be epic in another decade 😂. Love the Bonsai Life!
I purchased a jade pre-bonsai from one of your videos in 2021 its developed wonderfully and I just repotted it again this season
Thank You for posting such a great video. There is so much info about the Bald Cypress and how to care for it.
This tree looks amazing🤩🤩 im in love with this. Great work👏👏😍
Thanks for the details on how to keep a bald cypress. Thanks!
Hi… I am from Malaysia. Will it grow in our tropical climate?
Love learning more I’ll keep these tips in mind
Bald cypress are amazing trees!
Thanks for the much needed information, I've been thinking of adding one to my collection for some time but was hesitant with utah's extremely hot dry climate.
I think if you set it in a dish of water you should be fine. I have friends in Tucson Arizona that also have Bald Cypress.
What insecticide are you using monthly?
Lucid and Talstar I rotate on a bi monthly basis
I’m once more surprised to notice that you completely forgot about Celsius… 😅
Why, he lives in the US.
You'll have to do some work yourself.
