  • Casting - Golf Swing Error: How to Fix
    www.golfdistil...
    What is Casting in Golf?
Casting in golf means that you are losing lag as you bring down the club towards impact. It means that you are flicking the club away when you start the downswing, losing the lag that was created during the backswing. The swing error is similar to that of trying to scoop the ball up from the ground.
What happens to golf shots when you cast?
Casting produces poor strikes at the ball that will lack power. Fat and heavy golf shots can also occur at impact. Balls will usually fly higher than normal and won’t go as far as normal, resulting in a loss of distance.
How do you fix casting in golf?
In order to fix the cast in your golf swing you need to keep and retain the lag that was created during your backswing. You need to make sure that your hands are ahead of the ball at impact, that your hands are winning the race to the ball.
A good mental picture to adopt is to try to hit the ball first, to hit down on the ball so that your club strikes the ball before creating a divot.

I really struggle with casting from the top and have tried all kinds of drills to hold the angle. You really don't say how to retain the angle coming down. Sure, I know I need to do this, but can't. At the moment I am doing the wall drill, which is a great drill for casting. But I still cast. What I believe is the primary culprit is the grip pressure and hit impulse of the right hand from the top which unhinges the wrist right from the top. To combat this, I try to keep my right hand grip very light on the club with no pressure exerted on the club. It comes in at the bottom of the downswing, not the top. I was wondering why no instructors mention this as a possible cause of casting. It seems to be helping me hold more angle in conjunction with the wall drill.

Interesting observation regarding grip strength on the right hand. We are releasing a video this coming Thursday on the importance of keeping the lag, which you may find useful. (And another drill at a later date too). Thanks for your feedback.

@@Golfdistillery Let me revise this. What seemed to help a lot yesterday was getting the grip pressure to the left three fingers of my left hand and getting the right hand out of the driver's seat or dominate position and taking over the swing. Hit the ball much better, not longer, but more accuracy and consistency. But still struggling with casting. Saw it in the video. Going back and working on the wall drill.

@@sandyk6657hey I can relate to everything you describe above as far as casting and the right hand potentially being a primary culprit for this.
I was wondering if you’ve found any other drills or “feels” / swing thoughts helpful to resolve the casting ? Much appreciated

It seems that all the videos I watch on this topic say stop casting by retaining the angle.
That’s like telling your doctor “it hurts when I do this” and he responds “don’t do that.”
