Rod is among the best music creators of all time and one of the most down-to-earth, humble and nicest people I have had the privilege to meet. I will never forget the day I met him. And "Give me the night" ranked among my favourite songs even before I know who wrote it. Legend" Legend! Legend!
We all knew Rod was a great songwriter even the blind could see that....Heatwave proved that long before Quincy ever saw it. Just imagine if Johnnie was never in that accident those hits would have been Heatwave hits. Quincy is good but he did not make Rod or discover him lets keep it real.
@@gregharris5278-Here’s the killer part, all those hits you mentioned “WAS” offered to Heatwave 1st !!! Yes “Rock With You” & among others was offered to the group but Johnnie Wilder Jr. turned them down !!!
@@gregharris5278 Exactly, Rod killed it way before Quincy. Quincy was at that point wasn't doing shit. He was looking for talent because he was a brand but was not musically killing it anymore.
Rods work is just off the chart! An absolute gem from Lincolnshire UK! Love Heatwave; they truely were an underated band. There disco hits are one part, their albums were and still are a joy to listen too and all remastered by BBR btw.
One of our most important songwriters from the mid 70s onward. One of his lessor known tracks is Getting to the Good Part which is a great soul jazz crossover. Check it out x
Rod was pretty fly for a white guy! Amazing to think he came from Cleethorpes here in UK. Someone who would be one of the greatest song writers of all time! Well in the top10 easy! R.I.P Rod but your legacy will live on Always and Forever!
Greg should be teaching a Masters class at the colleges or write The book about his orbit of friends and associates. I could listen ti him for hours. Smart, articulate discerning and humble. His own musical history is not shabby. Why he is not a screen writer or producer..i don't understand. He walks in Quincy's foot steps.....lots of fabulous stories to share. Come on..someone should tape this talent...where are the videos or interviews or spoken word CD's.And...yes, Mr, Temperton was a stellar song writer and a nice guy, to boot! We miss you Rod.....thanks for your fantastic body of work.
English skinny guy from Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire. There corrected, I’m from Clps btw and we never refer to ourselves as coming from the East Midlands.
@@cloveriteI love Cleethorpes beach, and in particular Papa’s, a fantastic place for fish and chips. I’ve seen the blue plaque dedicated to Rod. It’s in a parade of shops not far from Grimsby Town football club.
I think I would edit what this guy said about Rod. Rod with Heatwave were making some of the best funk/disco dance music at the time. The grooves were amazing - Heatwave had great musicians, singers and Rod's songs. Listen to Groove Line. Great musi like where years later Daft Punk saw what Chic did. Sadly, Heatwave had some personal problems with bass player and singer that was going to sink the band. Quincy was smart enough to realize Michael needed something new. Rod and Heatwave were the freshest thing around. Rod was a hit making machine. MJ did a great job & great voice but Heatwave could have made these songs big hits.
the truth is that Thriller, Rock with You was actually a song Rod wrote for Heatwave, but the band rejected it. so he brought it to Michael. they weren't custom gems. Quincy was intelligent in that he picked out a hit-songwriter.
The song 'Off The Wall' sounds exactly like a Heatwave song. I'm sure it hurt the guys from Heatwave when he gave the song to Michael. It must have crushed them.

@@erbyfatal4919 bad is bad, As Huey said. The Album Bad is a pile of shit. Wall and Thriller great but it ended there. Very fortuitously for Me, after the1st 2 albums My Mum and Dad stopped letting Michael Baby Sit.
I know what you mean. I didn't think much of it for quite a while and saw it as kind of comedy song or cartoon song, if You like. It is a well written/ produced song though but is no Off The Wall.
Ok. I’ll start the bandwagon: Rod Temperton belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He's not already?! WTF
Hall of fame, soul of fame, hip-hop of fame.. all of them shits.
He definitely should be. Musical Genius and Legendary Hits!
Past time.

Rod Temperton had a huge unique gift of creating songs/music. Always in awe of the creators. The unsung heroes.
Genius! One of the great songwriters of all time.
Quincy Jones knew & could spot talent, he sees it in the musicians he works with & the songwriters as well. (R.I.P Rod Temperton) 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I've listened to a lot of Heatwave songs and I'm telling you this now there is no Thriller without rod temperton

I totally agree with americaspeaks1! He was the star of the story! Rip. Thanks Greg and utube.
If he’s not in it there shouldn’t be one. He wrote Thriller,Off the Wall,Rock with you, Boogie Nights, etc
Okay??!! A shame this is even a discussion.
“Love X love” and “Give me the Night” for George Benson
No, Thriller isn't one of the "greatest dance" tracks of all time...It is one of the "greatest" tracks of all time.
Exactly..!

This man tells a lot of stories.
Now I understand why Boogie Nights and Off The Wall have almost similar bass lines.
