Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I don't usaully write, but you have such a great attitude, unbecoming personality and very clear explanation of what you are doing. I hope you continue with you videos. I may need a few more inches to pull this off but I am going to try!

I used to have really long hair and also did historical re-enactment. This was one of my favorite ways to wear my hair for demos and I was constantly asked if it was my real hair. People seriously thought it was a hair piece because of the ribbon, but of course I couldn't exactly take it down to show them. :-) Watching your hair vids is making me want to grow my hair out again.

I was able to to do this with a co-workers hair that was just below shoulder length and I used clip in flowers to hide the tails of the braids. She wore it to her mother's Easter party and got lots of compliments! This was a great tutorial!

This is an awesome idea, my hair is nearly waist length, and you're so right--you can get headaches from just the weight of a ponytail! I thought I was just making it up. My hair's a bit too short for this do, but as soon as it's long enough I'll definitely try it! Thanks!

This is so great! I have very long hair too and I get tired of certain updos very quickly. Ive tried doing something similar to this before but I never thought of the ribbon! That would make all the difference. Experience surely knows best.
And this doesn't take long to do either.
    Thank you for sharing!

  • @livlafluv7777

Wow! that is just plain beautiful and I am definitely intrigued. I really want to try it in my hair to see if it will work. the thing is, I have 60 inch, 4.7 inch thick hair. I know EXACTLY what it's like to get headaches every updo, and, since I can't find many updos that are easy enough to whip up, I end up with a plain old bun at the back of the head--which gives me a headache 9 out of 10 times. :D I believe this is the next hairstyle for me to try. :D
    Love the tutorial!

  • @torrinpaige
    @torrinpaige  11 лет назад

I go under the braids and get some scalp hair -otherwise they wouldn't stay. The ribbon just goes around the braids, not through. When I do a faux crown and tape it, I do end up going through the base of the Dutch braid that I start with and it seems to be pretty secure that way.

  • @elvishkat

Thanks so much for making this vid! It's taken me a long time to get the hang of it, and I'll let you know how I've tweaked it a little. I have mid-thigh hair. I use one hairtie on the end of the braid. I use one braid and wrap it all the way around and back on itself. That thin ribbon is essential. I leave an end hanging and tie it in a bow right at the other end. Peace :)

This was one of the first videos of yours I ever saw (about three years ago now!) and when I saw it I was so jealous because my hair was nowhere near long enough to do it. Today it suddenly popped into my head that surely my hair is long enough now (past tailbone) and oh yes, it is! I need a little more practice to get the braids positioned right and the ribbon looking neat but I'm so happy to have reached a hair milestone like this!

Hey Torrin! I'm not sure if you've seen this (you might have already), but I think Scunci caught on to this great look :) They now sell a "design weaver" kit that comes with a little needle-like tool and some fabric to weave through a hairstyle. I immediately thought of you when I saw this and I ended up buying it. I had planned on buying the yarn needle you'd suggested anyways and since this kit was just right there at CVS I just went for it. I can't wait to try this look :)

I have been wearing my hair up like this (maybe as often as once a month, or a little less) since I saw this vid. I did change it up a bit, by doing 2 french braids, then the hair taping. I have STRAIGHT hair and it's pretty fine, so the extra braid gives the ribbon something to anchor to - no slipping. And it looks nice with the braid underneath. I think next time I'll try 2 dutch braids. Maybe I'll send a picture. I'm finally to "classic" length! :) Love all of your vids!

My Spanish is atrocious. Um the gist of moyole's message is that she cut her hair very short recently, but luckily it grows fast, and with the help of Rosemary oil it will be pretty like mine? Am I close? Can I get some help from my bi-lingual people? My Spanish teacher would be ashamed. Two years of Spanish and I can barely order food properly. (In my defense that was *cough* 18 years ago.)

If you don't mind, I think I'll pat myself on the back for that. LOL. You are welcome and I'm so glad that I've been able to help!

  • @1specialsnowflake1

I tried this tonight with just-shy-of-hip hair. It was clearly not quite long enough, but I managed a braid further back. Once difference -- I pulled my ribbon through with a crochet hook. It happened to be on hand and it worked GREAT. I didn't do an awesome job with matching my two sides but overall I think it looks cute.

  • @torrinpaige
    @torrinpaige  13 лет назад

@jbb556 I used a regular two-strand rope braid, but you can use any kind you'd like, or none at all. You can just twist it and clip it, then sew it in. That might work if you feel your hair is just a bit short to be braided...as braids tend to eat length.

How does this compare with a braided crown for comfort? You mention it as distributing the weight of your hair, and that's what I like about crowns.
Additionally, do you have any plans to do a video showing how to do a crown? I would like having some more ideas of how to do it.

  • @silentapprentice

I saw a version of that style where someone made a couple of thin braids and kept them off to the side, and when they were finished taping, they would take the side small braids and bring them up and over to the other side, and do a sort of weaving effect with them. Like a fancy hairnet using your own hair! You should try it that way. That same weaving effect is used to make buns look more fancier.

First I love this hairstyle! It keeps me from getting headaches and I was getting three or four a week, the only thing I've done different is wear my hair up like this! But I have a question. I can't get the clips to grip onto the braids tight enough, the braids slide & end up with a poof in the back where the braids start, they also slide after a while on my head when sown. I've tried sewing half-stitches through them, and then around too. Any other suggestions on how to keep them in place?

  • @Becky1680

Wow, fabulous! I had hip length hair a few years ago and stupidly cut it off. I've now started growing it out again (currently about APL) and I can't wait until it's long enough to do styles like this. I never used to bother with fancy braids last time it was long, I mostly just had it in a pony tail. Sooooo gonna try this once it's a little longer :D

  • @torrinpaige

they just used ribbons..no elastic hair ties. I use elastic as I'm doing it myself and it's just easier. So, they just tied it off with ribbon and did it pretty much the same. Of course, their needles weren't plastic, but I figure they probably had needles specifically for this hairstyle.

My hair is to the back of my knees and I was wondering when doing this, do you put the ribbon through the hair under the braids or work it through them finishing at with some of the hair at the back of them? It's hard to tell in the video if your just going under them or a mixture of under and through. Love the hairstyle will totally try it because there is hardly anything new I can do to my hair to make it look new and gorgeous with how long it is.

@RepublicTX This information is much appreciated! I stopped blow drying my hair over 5 years ago, I curl my hair maybe 4 times a year and straighten my hair about 6-8 times annually. If I do, I use heat protectant spray but tbh I swear they never work. Still, the amount of times I apply heat appliances to my hair is very rare, so that shouldn't be my issue. I guess I need to get my hair trimmed a little more often and my nutrician in check which is difficult being a full time student. Thankyou x

One thing I thought of to make this more period for your viewers who go to the Ren Faires. If they have period ribbon they could tie their ends off with ribbons and then just use period ribbon to sew their hair. I think many of the ladies who go to Ren faires could find some period ribbon to use for this. Also, since I don't have ribbon but have an excess of yarn from various knitting projects, do you think this would work with yarn? I plan to try it I just wondered what your thoughts were.

That was beautiful. I just cut my hair because the ends were really dead. I am going to grow it out again tho and try this!

@aprillynn1975 Mine will slide back just a bit, but my braids usually don't separate. Make sure when you sew to keep as much tension as you can on your ribbon and when sewing into your scalp hair to come up as close to the braid as possible..that should help. You can also sew in another color ribbon going in the opposite direction..if you started on the left side, start on the right instead. It makes a pretty criss-cross pattern and should hold up really well.

I've done something similar with hairpins. The ribbon looks alot more comfortable. I'm thinking I'm going to be trying that.

Lovely! :D I've been doing my hair in a style pretty similar to this, but using pins, etc instead of sewing it on - headache! Thanks a lot, I'll definitely try this!

This is adorable. Reminds me of Ginger Rogers!
