youll hear a voice in your head when you roll... "i hope my opponent doesnt do this" "i hope we dont end up here" "oh no hes got me" "oh no im stuck" "how did he get out of that" that voice is your guide. its telling you what you need to study and focus on next
I’ve been autistically hyper focused on position over submission since I started 5 years ago. So much so that I struggle to finish some blue belts but spend 99.9% of rounds in dominant position lol
I had this problem. I found that letting them recover a bit and and getting the dominant postion again and again works for me. They get dead tired and you can go for submitions or find something in transitions.
That is perfectly okay. Some people don’t have that finishing instinct. GSP is one of the greatest if not the greatest MMA fighter of all time but he didn’t have the instinct to finish but would dominate every aspects of a fight. You’re not less than cos of that.
As a 6’3 230 lbs white belt. I’ve focused on playing guard for over a year, higher belts, especially bigger guys are surprised when they find themselves defensive from top position and I love it. Although my top pressure game is staring to lack.
Really appreciate this one. 3.5 yrs in. I’ve been focussing on positional control and pin escapes. It’s meant that I feel safe even when a strong, tough person gains the upper hand. I can wear them out and grind to top position. I figure the finishing will become a focus later in my journey.
Thank you for this. I literally don’t have time. I mean I do during the day to watch a bunch but I’m 55 years old and 1 year in so yes thank to vids I got my Blue in 10 months but I need to evolve… faster! 😅
Just focus on all the escapes, pin, and submission escapes, once you get defense down, you can work offense, I’d also suggest learning stand up and take down defense.
Your game for 6 months is survive, maybe escape. Then you'll get better at escaping usually to closed or half guard. Then you can develop those 2 positions. Eventually you'll learn to escape via wrestle ups, sweeps and reversals. From there you can start working your passing more (pro tip: pressure passing is king). Then you'll be in side control and your next mountain will be either mounting, taking the back or submitting and you can learn them.. etc. Survive, escapes, pass, control, submit is your road map
its hard to escape, its hard to get submissions. Your best bet will be learning and getting really good at pin escapes first, mount, side control, north south, and back is kinda included. Then some guard retention but thats a whole other journey xD
Thanks Josh! You're the man! great video as always. I need to work on my guard. I'm going to try and use your advice.
Thanks mate 🤝🏻 legend
This makes me think that I might be on the right track. Super comforting. Thanks for taking the time, this was gold!

God I identify with this. Just a blue belt but this is a lot of my rolls

God damn thought it was just me haha
You sound satisfied I wouldn't be satisfied you should try to still identify weaknesses

This is 100% true
Can you break down how to study your own training film? I watch all my matches in the gym but could be more efficient
Check your weaknesses and improve

Thank u
im roughly 2 months in, i find myself thinking of how just to survive. Once i'm in a good position, I struggle to finish.
welcome to being a whitebelt
What did you expect
