I suppose the issue I had with Gladius was after I finally got my economy going and the technology unlocked for a range of units of different types the game was basically over already. And you end up building one of 2 to 3 unit types and just sweeping the whole map against the AI.
Yeah, pretty much. At higher difficulties there are a lot of units I pretty much never build and only research at the end when it doesn't matter. The pressure of the unending horde tends to constrain your research and army makeup to only the most effective units available. I've found myself wishing there was more use for infantry in mid to late game.
Agreed. As much as I love Gladius, the Endgame suffers from ... inbalance.
This is why I play PvP gladius, which is so much fun.
Zephon kind of remind of an older game called Armageddon Empires.
I'm sold
Armageddon Empires ... So great , every time I start a game, this game hypnotize me. Vic Davis is a genius.
Huge fan of Gladius, Zephon is a cool looking game, I'm interested. Das, I would put Gladius in my top 5, without reservation. Excellent game.
I was a fan of Pandora, and obviously Gladius (which has great unique factions).
But i'm a bit worried that this game will feel the same as Humankind and Age of Wonders 4 (to some extent) did..
The fact that the factions are so similar, and only have trait / mechanical differences but that the actual unit differences come from tech, means that each playthrough wont FEEL that different, since you "could" unlock the same techs with different factions, and thus end up with the same kind of units..
I'm honestly not a fan of that, because it ends with every playthrough feeling very homogenous (like in Humankind).
You end up picking similar things to what you like as a player, like in Humankind i always end up picking the same few cultures, since that's the bonuses i like. And then every game is essentially the same, same units, buildings etc.
Same with Age of Wonders 4, sure you can customize your starting faction, but a huge part of the diversity comes from unlocking the tomes during gameplay. And again, if you as a personality LIKES certain things, you will choose them over and over, if they're always available...
Then every game ends up with the same units...
I really really much prefer the old school way of having unique "hard-locked" factions.
So that right from turn 1, you CANNOT get the other factions units, you HAVE TO adapt and use your own factions unique stuff, ONLY.
That makes each game different, and forces you to find different things to like.
Gladius was GREAT in this regard. As if you pick Orks, you HAVE TO play Orks, 100%, and use their unique mechanics.
You CANNOT be half Ork half Eldar, and also get webways. No, you have to learn to play Orks.
That makes each game feel unique, as every faction plays different, and cant ever crossover.
Just really worried that this game will end up feeling as homogenous each playthrough as Humankind did.
Sure you can unlock a different mix of cyber / eldrich techs each game, but really, the most fun is sticking with one theme.
And in that sense, there's really only 2-3 themes?
That will FEEL like 3 factions in total. Even if you choose more factions at game start.
Too much freedom of variety is actually limiting variety.
Customizability is a very tempting idea, but ultimately it's putting game design decisions in the hands of the player, who has a conflict of interest. Players are notorious for ruining their fun for the sake of "victory".
Thanks for the informative video! Game looks really amazing. It''s like a modern hybrid of Gladius + Pandora with a secret ingredient like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri .
Great overview Das, many thanks!
I thought Pandora was really panned. I didn’t play much but didn’t get many Alpha Centauri vibes from it except maybe for the modular units
Right up your street this Daz
Thanks for the video! Honestly, sir pretty solid alpha. Just finished the demo an I like it so far.
This game looks awesome thanks for showing us the demo
I did not have the time to watch and just took a quick glance and it really looks like Gladius. If I hadnt known, I could have confused both!
Those machinegun sounds are satisfying!
Any idea if this will be made available on consoles? It has elements that remind me of age of wonders planet fall. A game that I really enjoy but seeing the elements that I like in that game improved upon and moved in to a more serious and darker setting is something I am excited to see.
nice
Looks fun.
we all know how much you love the game, das. so i will keep a very open mind.
Grab that one, close this one, click on that one, this is the one, kill this one off, get rid of one, move this one, this one is moving, this one here, bring this one across, leave that one
Demo comes out tomorrow so I will give it a go but I agree with others that this looks like a simple reskin. Will see I guess but that would be disappointing.
Currently I think it looks a little too much like Gladius. Hopefully it will become more distinct as development continues.
Main problem i got with that game is that i got feeling that is reskin of gladius.
early in the video I was about to comment: "Hey this is a Warhammer 40k Gladius ripoff!!"
Turns out the game is being developed by the same studio LOL
I love Gladius! it's simple and more focused to action compared to Civ 6, Age of Wonders, etc
Really curious to see what they've brewed up without the constraints of WH40K.
Lol that is just warhammer gladius reskin ^^. Idk why they just dont make gladius 2 ?!!
Where's "reskin"? Visually it's the same.
@@mkapaceb98 Ya basicly it is lol .
That was going to be my comment. If it were actually Gladius 2 I'd be super stoked. This isn't different enough for me.
Games Workshop royalties must be meaty.
All i see is reskined Gladius, hope this game has more meat to it
I don't get the hype.
Looks exactly like any other game in the genre: cluttered map, same options, same gameplay style. Nothing new, nothing remarkable.
It's all looks and little content, as per usual.
