The Plovdiv concert was a very special night and the culmination of several years of planning. Devin never fails to make me feel better about life, he is such an emotional singer and always full of joy performing even on darker songs, I believe from what I gathered in a couple of interviews Mike Kineally helped Devin with the orchestra because Devin sees sound in colour (a form of synesthesia) and could not express in a way the orchestra could understand how he wanted things to sound. This takes wall of sound to its ultimate level for Devin. Big Love Brother
Dude, I love watching your reactions to Devin. The guy is beyond amazing. The first time I listened to his solo work it was like it vibrated at the same frequency as my soul. I couldn't even describe it. And the first time I saw him in concert, back in 2010, I got to meet him after the show. It was a small venue and he and the rest of the band were breaking down their own equipment. He was so gracious to talk to my friend and I, and he's very humble. I even told him then that I've never heard another person with such a mastery over their own voice. He even took a picture with my friend and I. Super amazing artist and human being. I would absolutely recommend watching the official video for this song. The visuals in the video will give you all kinds of different chills. Even if you do it on your own time, you won't be disappointed. And I second some of the other comments that Deep Peace, from this same show, is amazing. Likewise, the album version of Transcendence. Twice, at the end of the song, he holds the note in the word "transcend" for an inhumanly long time. Seriously, listen to it and time it. Anyway, great reaction my friend. Keep on being an amazing person yourself.
As a 35 year old male metalhead Devin never ceases to make me ball my eyes out like a little baby with some of his music. The overall positivity/introspection to his post SYL music is an utterly fantastic experience. How he can fly so under the radar with his talent is truly beyond me.
I get goosebumps so often while listening to Devin's music. He's the first singer I encountered where I didn't mind growling/screaming. I can hear what he is saying and you do feel it directly into your soul like a punch (but a lovely punch!) Hope you are doing well!
This song...no creation... brings me to tears...this man is a musical genius...and we grew up on the same streets of Vancouver...his music gives me so much that I didn't know I needed... this entire Plovdiv concert is pure music magic
Seen this legend twice, one was a very intimate acoustic show in a church, and the other on his excellent empath tour. Such a great musician. Never seen so many metalheads cry while headbanging. Including me. Great reaction as always! 🤘🖤
He puts together some freakin' epic live shows, I really want to go see one some day. I agree that his voice is amazing, but I think his guitar work is equally as amazing. Admittedly I don't know much about guitars, only that I've been in love with rock music pretty much my whole life. I watched an interview with Devin, John Petrucci, and Tosin Abasi on Rick Beato's channel and they didn't even play music much at the beginning, but I was mesmerized by their conversation.
If you're gonna delve into Plovdiv it's worth checking out Deep Peace, a beautiful song but the solo is genuinely transcendental, and the lift out of it with the choir is a sensation that never fails to just slaughter me. The best use of the choir is in Higher, the finale to that is something else entirely. Hehe this is the more typical Dev song: a titanic strum of the emotions with numerous parts and a thread of genius that only fully comes to light after numerous listens. Stuff like this, Grace, Pixillate, Genesis, Numbered, War, Universe in a Ball, Everything on Deconstruction, most of the stuff on Trasncendence (which is the album Stormbending was taken from.) Why, Sprite, Singularity...etc etc. Kingdom is a short sharp shock, perfect intro to Dev's incredible voice and the massive wall of sound he plays with. Deadhead is a long sharp shock, it doesn't change much but it uses what it has effectively. This is a step into the wider Dev world. if you want complex try any of the tracks above, if you want simple but beautiful "Ih Ah" from The Retinal Circus with Anneke will brighten your day. Spirits Will Collide the video will give you a boost and the version from Order of Magnitude will make you cry. Oh and you have to do "Death of Music", live at the Royal Albert Hall. I used to listen to the version on Ocean Machine on a loop, laid down in the dark just absorbing every sonic metre of it. Hearing him sing it live is a whole other level. I'd recommend doing a reaction, then go into a dark space with some good headphones and lose yourself in that wash of sound.
I second Higher! at Plovdiv as the best use of the orchestra and choir. I never really felt the song that much on Transcendence, but boy... the Plovdiv version is just amazing. Also agree with Deep Peace. And yes, Death of Music version of Plovdiv is great, but I think Wolf already did the RAH version if I'm not mistaken. I might be wrong though.
I own this DVD, and U=I still get teary eyed. It happens with a lot of my favorite Dev music. It's raw emotion at it's finest, mostly culminating in an inspirational, uplifting delivery and when he goes to his Operatic tenor and hangs out on that magic G note - I'm reaching for Kleenex every time. Thanks so much for your thoughtful listen, if you want to see a rare, magic guitar solo, try Deep Peace live from Plovdiv (same concert video) He always used backing tracks for the song, and having the musicians playing with that song is like main lining pure bliss. Thanks again for shining a light on my favorite artist and human ever Cheers!!
Welp, now that you've moved passed the standard listening to Deadhead and Kingdom, welcome to Hevy Devy. A limitless, beyond talented musical artist. Folk/country to heavyyyy prog. I have to hear more. Bravo Cosmic, that was awesome and TY for brightening a little bit of my day with this song! ♥and
