I recently drove a plaid model s for a day and the acceleration is unbelievable, face melting. The yoke is so silly but kinda intuitive after a bit. As a Tesla hater I loved it ngl. But then again my only car is a tuned RSX Type S so I'm easily impressed the by the horsepower and the tech lol. This thing is a rocket.
Love my S Plaid. Ultimate daily drive for my driving style. Unbelievable power from any speed that can be enjoyed year round, excellent comfort, ride quality tech and visibility. Main, downsides are it it isnt special (it s a Tesla), potential depreciation, and its a bit large. Go fast gas powered "enthusiast cars" that make the good sounds, you can shift gears and that provide "soul" are best to enjoy on the weekends imo. BTW the round steering wheel with the Tesla track pkg provides a much more enjoyable driving experience.
What do you think? The one I had for a couple days was only on Plaid for fun here and there and was either in sport for fun or chill for normal driving thereafter.
Need you to test a track package with a steering wheel , surprising how much the track pack adds to the experience. Either way these cars are INSANE for how much you can get them for used . Easily the best daily driver you can buy for 50-100k
I own a plaid and a Honda s2000. I love my plaid. Best daily driver ever. Best deal ever since 2021 plaids can be had all day in the high 40s to low 50 thousand range. It’s my favorite car and I have own most of the Japanese sports cars. I also love that it’s not special and no one cars about a Tesla since they are everywhere. Blends in very well especially for a low 9 second car that traps over 150mph in the 1/4 mile.
“Stability is not this cars forte” I drove my friends for a week, it feels like it’s literally going to fall apart at highway speeds. Genuinely feels unsafe and like someone built it in their garage.
Model S Plaid for $40k? Cap And it absolutely doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart at highway speeds I literally daily drive a model s plaid It drives at 90 mph like other cars do at 40/50, smooth as butter
@ was going off the RUclips video, he said 40k I don’t know the market. Could have been something wrong with my friends car, that was just my personal experience
Also it’s a car that accelerates faster than slows down, which also gives you the sensation that brake doesn’t work that well. I wasn’t aware that when I drove it back then until Jason Cammisa lapped this with Randy Pobst few years ago saying that, which completely making sense
I appreciate your perspective on the plaid and how it compares to your experience with the new Model 3 Performance. I've put about 60k miles on my plaid, and the acceleration still hasn't gotten old. Although the car doesn't have the excitement of noise, the fear, especially when trying to brake for a turn after full throttle, induces excitement, lol.
@@ultimatist I'd say that among many enthusiasts, it's very much what they are looking for. It's the main reason to drive RWD vehicles (even though FWD is objectively just as fast and gives you a much better feeling of being in control while reducing weight by typically ~100 kg) and the main reason cars like the Dodge Viper is so legendary, or even old 911 turbos. Or for that matter, why RWD BMWs are considered to be "driver's cars". That said, dangerous cars aren't always fun, and I agree - I've owned expensive "fancy" cars (like the 981, whose mid-engine layout combine with liftoff-oversteer tendencies and near-zero road feedback makes it a terribly unfun car to drive) and I find myself having a lot more fun in budget FWD cars where you can feel what the front wheels are doing. Trail-breaking hard into a corner without feeling like you're going to fly into the trees next to the road is a nice feeling that you just can't get with many "enthusiast" cars. If I drove an RWD BMW I'd be dead now.
@@rasmusansin3273 it's not the main reason to drive RWD for anyone I know. RWD is a simple and effective platform that maximizes traction and can provide light oversteer, which is faster around a canyon or track with an experienced driver. I'm referring to the absolute lack of tire feedback from the wheel and brakes, which means you never know when you're going to slide uncontrollably into a tree or barrier. If you like the notion that you could be decapitated or crushed seemingly at random, with no clear communication from the road, you do you.
I appreciate the bias awareness and admittedly strong performance in some categories. I'm not a huge fan of these as a sports car, but I can understand why it could be a really fun daily haha
Preface, I bought a 2021 Model S Plaid a little over a year ago and it's been my daily driver since. 100% True on the handling and braking aspect. For 1000hp car and a car that can go 60-130mph in 5 seconds dead, the brakes are woefully insufficient, and the handling is understeer city with very little chassis feedback. And because the plaid has dual rear motors and is capable of true torque vectoring it's disappointing that the drive modes (even track mode) really don't make use of it to increase the car's agility. With the dual rear motors they can utilize both power and regen to increase or decrease the yaw momentum of the car which would make the car feel significantly more agile. The Plaid should automatically come with the Carbon Ceramic brakes and 20" wheels. In addition, the chassis engineers and software devs in charge of chassis control should really take a page from Ford's book with what they did on the Focus RS (A car I also own and drove daily before the Plaid). The Focus RS is alive in a way that few cars can come close to. The steering response, feedback, and sheer braking and handling capability are easily in super car territory, even if the overall power is not. (Will say the Ride quality is definitely too stiff, particularly rebound damping).
Model S is the one tesla that doesn't look like an a$$hole mobile. Not sure why they tried to use the exact same design on a suv and a compact. Model 3 and x/y look like clone pods
Just experienced FSD and WOT in my buddy’s Tesla Plaid. It does not disappoint. He sold his 991.1 and 997 and only kept his G-body SC bc he was so impressed.
It's a strong, very strong, saloon car, but it's sure not a drivers car. It's not bad and for most people that is what they are looking for in a fast car, just not my cup of tea, I always preferred handling and feedback over power.
I have a 22 model S non-plaid which is 670HP and it’s a great daily it’s no slouch and I hear handles a bit better since it’s not a rocket ship with less weight than a plaid from the lack of the third motor. Weekend fun car is a 981 GT4, polar opposite but amazing two car solution. Picked up the model S pre owned for 45k with the refresh headlights and taillights so I think it was a great deal for a daily!
Listening to your description of the suspension I wonder if this car also rides on bump stops at speed, or if it's simply not well damped in the high speed range. The hysteresis of high speed damping can create a jacking down, or jacking up effect of an axle, depending on if it's rebound or compression biased. More often than not, cars that are overdamped in high speed rebound(typical of linear dampers) will jack the car down until it just sits on the bump stops, then you have the combination of compression damping, spring rate, suspension compliance and bump stop as your new effective wheel rate.
I noticed a strong transition, about how I used to think The S was cool, to years later after Elon has totally gone off the rails, to thinking all Tesla's are the worst. (in Canada they're almost all status mobiles, driven more slowly then most 2001 Champagne colored Corolla's) You'd think that thing would come with a really aggresive pad compound etc to combat the extreme power.
The brakes are not adequate for a car that heavy and that fast. It may be fine for daily driving, it's not ideal if you want to lean on the performance of it at all. Because it's so fast and so heavy it stretches the braking energy needed several times over what a Porsche needs to have repeatable reliable braking.
Love my MSP moreso then any other car i've ever owned, and I've owned almost every vehicle you can imagine. The tech is just unbelievable and the speed is mind altering. My only gripe and I've always felt the same for a six figure car they could have used a few higher quality materials. Also the air suspension is probably the worst of any luxury car i've ever ridden in. I'm ready to trade in my 21 for a 25 for AI4 but the depreciation is just horrendous
Serious question. Imagine a parallel world. The tesla plaid exists, same shape, same look, same interior, but it has a 2 litre mazda engine. Would anyone here at all buy it? would it even be reviewed? This car without that power output probably gets out sold by a mazda 6. Thats how much I know this is a one trick pony. Because if you remove the supposed one trick...........It is now obviously nothing.
