I have to tip my hat to the Harman marketing team. They managed to completely dominate my RUclips feed with reviews of Phoenix 200.
I'm stoked that Harman released this film! Really arty, I love the grain and the muted colours! Well done Harman, I hope this is not the last colour film you release, and please don't change this film, it's awesome as it is!
I am beyond stoked that Harman have done this. I really love the look of the film & I'm sure they will tweak and perfect their process over time. But I hope this version stays around at the same time.
I've always liked Ilford as a company and this current lineup of management is truly showing their commitment to the film community.
Ordered my first batch this afternoon after launch and can't wait to shoot some.
I just ordered four rolls here in the USA. To me it has a very vintage ‘seventies’ look to the photos. I am looking forward to shooting this on my Nikon F3. Cheers mate!
This looks like the color films that we had in the 1970's. I'm sure that it will improve with time.
Harmon investing that amount of money is a good sign that the market for film is continuing to grow.
It's great to see the commitment to film photography shown by Harmann. It reminds me of Cinestill on the night shots and Ektachrome on the daylight ones. A curious emulsion indeed.
Whilst I don't shoot that much colour, it's fantastic news. Well done Harman!
Great video - thank you so much for being involved with the launch of HARMAN Phoenix.I love the long exposure night time shots!
This was a fun video! I taught myself photography with color negative and color reversal film. I loved the color saturation that the reversal film gave and I was never quite satisfied with color prints. When I got my digital cameras I started using them for my color photography. But for Black and White it's 90% film. The colors in this film are as you say, very 80's feeling. It really seems to shine on blues and reds. Almost reminds me of older fuji. Your daughter sure makes a great model and it's always uplifting to see her captivating smile! Give my best to the family, mate!!
Thanks for the kind words, like you I use Digital for most colour works but switch to film now and again for it. I just can't print colour!
Great video, thanks, and also many thanks to Harman for bringing out a new colour film, we must support this effort. I love the muted colours, and the grain looks just gorgeous.
WoW !! Just seen this! Looking at the Negs I can see it is what is called an 'Un=Masked Emulsion' like the original Agfa CN 17 and CN14 I used in the 1970's ! It is probably an XP2 400 with Colour Couplers inserted . Lucky to get those Secret Test Rolls ! ENVY !
That's a pretty educated guess! There's no mask on this film, but this will be something we'll look at inthe future
Yes, I felt it reminded me of something, and you are right. It is like 1970's Agfa colour negative films, but better, with smoother grain.
Harman/Ilford were right to include you as a tester of their new Colour film. I'm a HP5+ & FP4+ fan Boy now, So please Ilford don't change a thing about those films. It ain't broke.
Great to see Harman jump into color. Have to appreciate the time, money and effort involved when you see the process Kodak goes through to produce color films!
Glad to see that there is a new color film out there. I'm amazed by the brown's it produces. The halation it produces at nighttime are really stunning. Hope Harman keeps it that way. That being said, I wouldn't use it as everyday film, especially not for portraits. That pale skin rendering is, in my humble opinion, not always beneficial. But if someone likes it, go for it. The film is definitely worth a try. Think I should get my hands on a testroll. Oh, last but not least : I think it doesn't really like to get over exposed. Colors wash out quickly, at least it seems so. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
I thought the same: over-exposed shots need compensation in the "virtual printing". Plus, if Harman made it perfect, it would be no different to Kodak or Fuji, so best to keep the halation and unique look.
I am impressed. Phoenix 200 looks like a really good product.
Happy for Ilford with this big release! Continues to show Ilford's commitment to the film industry and community. Not a big color guy, but this looks fun. Seems to have a more nostalgic rendering, (which I enjoy). Seems slightly grainy too. Reminds me of a film lomography put out, which could be a copy of something else that exists under another name.
Harman
@@chqngolion1777it’s another entity of Ilford. A person called Harman found Ilford company in 1879😂
its not a copy - its a brand new emulsion designed and manufactured by Ilford.
Ilford is a trading name of Harman I believe. They can't use the ILFORD branding on any colour materials. They made this film from scratch so it's exciting to see what else they come up with in the future.
Good job. Looks like a very contrasty film. Think you did well with the colors. It did appear from the Skittle photo, that this film does NOT like dark purple. But this does show just how difficult making good color film is. I like ILHarmanford's results better than ORWO NC400/500, from what I can tell. But I'm going to guess it all comes down to the scanning and conversion.
really like the colours you get looks like photos from the 70' and 80' looking forward to trying some of this.
This is huge. I'm sure we'll see more videos on this but congrats on being the first to hit my feed at least. Quality of the video is off the charts. Even better than the usual standards. Thanks so much for your hard work on this.
Much appreciated!
Awesome that they manage to actually do this. Looks interesting. 👍
Visited the factory many times over the years :) - great to see this!!
Of all of the videos I've seen on this film, yours is the only one that makes me kinda want to buy a roll and give it a go. I'll put it in my Nikon too for good luck as I see you had good results on yours.
Thanks for the kind words Timothy.
I think its a great thing for the film industry . I am excited to see where this goes. And more excited to see more variations of there color films over time as well.
I just saw this in my feed. Yours is the second video I watched in 2 days on this film. And in both of them the photos came out interesting in different ways. Yours are some of the best with this film. Only critique is the yashicamat photo and some more photos after that the trademark grain made it's presence. And I was looking for the orange trademark cast. I would like to see this film used with long exposures such as fireworks. Your portraits of your daughter, christmas tree and skittles are tops. Except for the hairs in some of them they are still nice. I have yet to use this film . Hopefully soon.
I wish them all the best and hope it creates competition with other color film manufacturers, with end users benefiting with lower priced quality film. I suddenly had flash in my mind of Aerosmith's song " Dream on".
G'day Rog,
Great video, good on Harman Ilford being bold enough to invest in a new product that isn't mono.
That would have taken considerable R & D and cash.
It's a great looking film possibly for subdued days (perfect for blighty then lol) I should imagine it would work really well in the early morning and dusk in Australia and indoors....love the slightly muted colour range....I don't shoot heaps of colour but I certainly would consider investing in this cheers buddy
Looks like a nice color film for gray winter days. Blue undertones with pops of red and green. Wonder what it would do with a polarizer on a bright sunny day?
I definitely would not use this for portraits. The color just seems off in some too yellow/brown. The colors in skittles and outdoor were not too bad. Nice video.
Thanks Harman you are leading the way in the film industry. Great job Roger !
Cheers Rick
Great video! I like your results more than all the others I've seen so far
Thank you! 😊
Not too sure about the halation and maybe not my cup of tea, but I can definitely appreciate the hard effort that has gone into making this film. Hopefully Harman will continue to improve the emulsion over time
Thank you. That's definitely our plan:)
Your images are the best I’ve seen shot with Phoenix.
Thanks April :)
I agree, this is the best video review I have seen for Phoenix 200.
Dang this looks right up my alley. I love the saturation in the overcast daylight shots.
I’ve gotta get me some to try.
I’m happy to see new color film produced.
Great video. These are the first pictures I see made with the Harman Phoenix film. Very great. But I shoot only in Black and white.
..Phoenix..grow the roses of success... awesome video and full of info ..will yake a peak over here at BH see if they carry it ...nice color coordination and rustics with Jess
Cheers Nick!
The blue undertones are gorgeous!
Thx, mostly I am black and white also, with a penchant for Lomo 100cn, but will give this a go.
Mate your test shots are the best looking I’ve seen so far
Glad you think so!
Agreed.
Love to Harman for this!
I love It so far. Reminds me Ektar quite a bit, it is very warm. I hope it comes to Norway soon. Very good review btw🤗
Just sent my roll off for developing and looking forward to the results.
Wow....I have to try this!!!
This is briliant.
Phenomenal results as usual; the portraits of your daughter are stunning renditions. The film base is very much like XP2 Super. I hope Mobberley can churn out some matching colour paper!
I didn't think of that, cheers. Of course it IS similar to XP2! Makes sense.
XP2 was my thought too, I reckon they are either directly reusing the base, or reusing the process that gives tthat stain. FWIW, it does seem like it's possible to get decent prints with regular RA4 paper.
i hope this gets a cine release in super 8 and 16mm too
Please, dear Santa (or Harman), I'd love to see a new E-6 film come to life...
I would really like to see it printed instead of scanned. I like what Harmon has done. But let’s see some prints from the negatives.
Thanks for the video.
You and me both! Sadly I can't print colour in my darkroom, I have no head.
We have printed it and whilst they are not the easiest negative to print they do print well. I =know that there is are some videos coming from people who will be printing in the colour darkroom so keep your eye out:)
Just ordered a couple of rolls 😁👍
I liked the new film and how it conveys colors))) Interesting)
I'd looooooove to see this emulsion in a 120 format...
Your results are terrific it seems it does well with camera scanning. It seems that some labs are struggling with scanning it.
Thank You, for making me curious - in Germany it's sold out, back in shop on mid of Dezember - All in all, another very useful video.
Hopefully soon!
I have ordered some and will have some fun with it over the Christmas period 🎉
Enjoy!
Maybe it's just how you scan but they look quite contrasty and a bit soft. Nice color tones, too. Pretty suitable for a P&S for some early 2000s feeling images.
HI Dane, yes Harman say it's contrasty. I tried to lift the shadows but the grain hit the scale! So I left as is
Great video I am excited to pick up some Phoenix myself, but I know what you mean winter is a rough time to get bright colors. I have a quick question was that red halation in the night photography. Thanks foe the video and I am very glad to your Docs have yellow laces.
The night shots seemed to bloom!
The film is perfect
Fabulous video. I LOVE the muted retro tones of this film. You did a cracking job of reviewing it. I won't be buying any though as £13+ processing is too expensive
I'm not a colour guru Peter but I might by a brick and see what I can do with it, although I can't print colour :(
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss time for a new adventure? Roger prints in colour? That could be fun :)
Thank you
ah okay now thats cool :D
Without using this film, the negatives look more contrasty than Kodak or Fuji, which means less exposure latitude and scans that fill your RGB colour gamut. It would be interesting to see how they enlarge in the traditional way, with an optical enlarger (i.e. not scanned). I suspect the result looks very contrasty, without burning in and dodging.
Awesome :)
You got way better images than me 😂😂😂 but my new health and safety chemist got insane photos with pushed Phoenix!!! It's proper mad!
Will give your video a proper watch when I have good connection!
Stay safe mate
Thanks!
Wow, thanks Mitch!
Absolut!
Did u edited the white balance cuz some photographer sample mostly like the film name phoenix n red.
The halations remind me of cinistill. Could make a great night film.
Id be happy woth thlse shots, turned out nice, pretty grainy for a 200 speed film but has its own vibe. Had a slight cinestill 800t vibe with the neon lights. Cpuld you explain why in night shots like one lf the pier the sign apears twice? That happened to me when I tried night shots, I was going to go out again and stop the lens down abit more to see if it stopped it...
That actually stumped me at first, then I realised there are two signs on the building.
It looks like unmasked color negative film made on b&w film base. I think it is still the best color product since release of Ektachrome.
Some suggested same base as XP2
Since it says Harman on the box, then it is definitely manufactured in Ilford in Mobberley. A lot of the stuff marketed under the Ilford brand are nothing to do with Ilford _Harman. I believe that the films have the Harman brand and the papers that are manufactured in Switzerland carry the Ilford name. It is difficult to say, but to my eyes, it seems that the anti halation layer is missing. There is a lot of blooming around the lights. This is a trick the Cinestill played with Kodak Vision3 emulsion and people seem to like their films. Interesting film though, Rog. It would be interesting to see what it looks like with a Bleach Bypass development.
Correct, though Harman produce Ilford-named products because of some grandfathering in of the brand name. Anything they make since the spinoff though, has to be Harman-ized.
I'm not sure how to bleach bypass Lensman! I don't shoot and develop colour much. So from what I believe Ilford is a trading name of Harman Technologies. The Ilford name is not allowed to be on any of their colour products. It's a business thing! But yes made in Mobberly from scratch. Clever stuff!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Bleach Bypass is exactly what it says on the tin. After the developer stage, the colour negative is bleached to remove the unused silver. By not bleaching this silver remains, in fact it forms a black and white impression on top of the colour image. This leads to an increase in contrast and a decrease in saturation. It has a very gritty effect. They used this process in the movie Saving Private Ryan, I think. Hope this helps Rog. Cheers.
I really hoped that the film that I knew for some time now, that they were working on, was going to be a transparency film, a modern version of Kodachrome. The halation is not something I would be happy to shoot, as there’s plenty of other films out there which show plenty of halation for nighttime photography. From what I can see in your photos, Rog, the film delivers punchy reds and oranges and that’s something I like. My go to 35mm colour film is Portra 160, so will need to compare it with that, particularly re the skin tones. A good start and will shoot whatever they bring out, as I appreciate their support for film photographers.
I'd love to see your vibrant photos on this film Tad.
I do not like the absolute lack of detail in the shadows, even at longer exposures. Good thing they plan to keep working on it.
Yours is the 4th video I have watched about this stock. The others were millennials posting poorly shot, poorly processed and poorly scanned images. From one old guy to another Your video is the only one that gives the faintest idea of what Harmon was probably trying to achieve with this stock. Experience matters!
Thanks! But I'm only 29 :/
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss What I actually wrote is " you are wise beyond your years" Must have been an autocorrect thing. 🙂
Looks pretty sharp to me. I wonder why other reviews show pictures that are very lomo potato looking.
I have only seen a few from others. I used Cinestill C41 kit and developed at home and let the software auto correct which it did well.
Wait, JUMBO Skittles?!
I remember Ilford making a colour film back in the days of my youth. I wonder if it's a re-incarnation.
No, that was a good film, this stuff is a hideous novelty. (In my opinion, o'course!)
I never knew that Brian. In that case I imagine it didn't sell well and they just stuck with Black & White maybe.
Ilfocolor 100 and 400 C41 also Ilfochrome EC, both matched to Ilfocolor RA4 and Cibachrome print products respectively.@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
Ilfochrome E6 that is.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I vaguely remember Ilford made a colour negative film in the ?1960s. It probably wasn't compatible with Kodacolor neg, so the photo labs hated printing it.
KODAK GOLD 200 currently costs € 7,- in Germany. Is HARMAN PHOENIX 200 color film twice as good? HARMAN € 15.49 versus KODAK € 7,-. Great when new films come onto the market! But at twice the price of comparable products? I don't want to buy it! Top black and white films are available for under € 10,-. Lucky for black and white photographers.!
Kodak Gold 200 is £10 here. I would imagine Phoenix will hit that price in certain stores online at some point.
Please tell me they are bringing this to 120 medium format! This stuff looks great.
They will do if the 35mm gets the right attention.
do you know color perfect filter for tuning your photos?
I don't.
Please, please, please HARMAN… please re-introduce Cibachrome film and papers. They were glorious!
Unfortunately the Cibachrome brand is owned by Ilford Imaging.
@@DavidWilliams7037A It was latterly called "Ilfochrome".
@@jamesdecross1035 Agreed. But the name 'Cibachrome' is owned by Ilford Imaging. They (Ilford Imaging) have released a colour film called Ilfochrome which is a repackaged film, not manufactured by them.
Not going to happen. It's expensive to manufacture and process and the demand is low.
👍👍👍
Ironically, colour film is well suited to subjects with only subtle amounts of colour variations. It makes it obvious, where black and white can't!
So this is a colour speaker, right?
Can you print this film in darkroom, because of the lack of orange backing? Or is this product good only for digital scanning?
I don't have a colour head in my darkroom or any other colour materials. I would love to have seen a few on paper.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I have a color head, lots of Fuji DP II in my freezer and a good supply of Enviroprint developer and bleach-fic in my closet.. I am still waiting for the Phoenix I have ordered. I just wondered if somebody has already tried to print this, but everything I can find in the internet is about scanning.
3:20 - is it a Phoenix 200T? 😅
Kind of reminds me of the free film you'd get from Truprint when you got a roll developed by them ages ago.
Looks pretty good although the halation could be toned down a bit.
Truprint film was Ferrania Solaris. Phoenix is most like 1970's Agfa film, but better, with smoother grain.
I love the colours but I wish their next film will have finer grain.
I didn't find the grain that bad at all really, depends if you like the grain for your subject. Sadly I couldn't see how it held up on a print.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Alright, I’ll have to try it out myself.
I wonder how this Harman Phoenix colour film would print on Black and white paper.
I will try that soon! Would be interesting to see. I have tried colour film before and it takes ages to get light through the negatives, but this Phoenix base might work better.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss yes that is what I was thinking. Can't get this Phoenix film here in Australia 🤔
Afaik they do that film totally from scratch
I think there's some grain to this film
Reminds me of the "free film" that you could get with some D&P postal services in the 1980's. Not a good look, in my opinion.
I heard its true ISO 125
200 Harman say. I'd stay with their tests.
I love film and have done lots of colour developing and printing in the past. That said I just don’t see the point of shooting colour film and then scanning the negatives. Just shoot digital.
I feel the same way, though I shoot a color roll every once in a while. For all the time, money, and effort if I really want color I'll go digital.
I guess for those without darkrooms, colour or BW, they have the negatives stored for the day they may set up a darkroom and just enjoy shooting old cameras and the excitement of getting the negs back or developing at home. I know lots of colour shooters that just love the look of colour film rather than using software filters to achieve it from digital. I did a vote once on the channel about this and it was pretty much half and half about printing photographs. There is a UK band called "The Vaccines" and a lot of their backstage photos are on colour film. I think one of the members is a keen film shooter. Point and shoot with flash it seems. And I'm sure they use them on their album covers. Interesting to see. Totally see your point though Terry.
@@danem2215 I agree, as I packed up my darkroom years ago. I scan negs with my digital camera and reverse them in Photoshop, so may have more control than scanner software.
Very grainy for its speed. More like 1600/3200. Underwhelming tbh.
Too expensive! The latest trend in color film is: Quality goes down, price goes sky high.
Give it time and I am sure with feedback Harman will tweak it as well as working on others maybe.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 17,79 Euro for a quirky film is too expensive, at least for me. But that's no problem as i'm a B&W shooter.
lot of grain, it seems, and the color on the portrait a little weird
maybe they are formulating it to look anti-digital
I shot some car details for a local Ford dealership a while back on Portra 160. Against the digital shots I could hardly tell the difference. Phoenix would definitely have been different. Maybe they did want it to look anti digital. Interesting thought.
It looks I’m the only one who doesn’t like it 😐
I'm sure you're not.
Keep in mind that this film is still being developed and modified.
It would have not been economical for Harman to R&D this film to perfection before releasing
@@piezu.I’m not sure it’s the best move to show unfinished product 🤔
Great video as usual Roger. Not a fan of the look this film gives at all. Colours, grain & contrast are terrible. I’ve based this on several videos. After all the lead up to this, all I can say is that I’m very underwhelmed. 😔
according to reddit this film is just rebranded kodak aerocolor
Harman say they made it from scratch in their factory. I can't believe they would rebrand already made film and say otherwise. Their reputation is too big to be tarnished with a rebrand.
