Sandhill Crane Vocalizations

- Sandhill Cranes make a variety of calls, from purrs to hisses to bugles, with variations that require the context of what the cranes are doing to understand. For example, purrs are used in calling young, prior to flight or mating, or when the crane is nervous. Unison calls or guard calls are sometimes used to let other cranes know this is the pair's territory or prior to or during flight flight, as well as in other circumstances. Vocalizations are complex and not fully understood. Enjoy these purrs and unison calls.
Fun fact , amongst other birds , the Sandhill crane was one of the many birds used when producing vocalizations for Rodan in Godzilla King of the monsters .
Cool! I can see why. Also who is Michael? I could google it. I’m asking for future readers.
HERE COMEA RODAAAAN
Bruce Lee 😉
Fun fact ugh
I thought it was more the muto
Well THAT'S what these guys are. Saw a pair throwing sticks at each other while out on a hike and didn't know what they were but they sounded like dinosaurs. So cool.
I remember when I heard its call for the first time, I was camping in a mountain range in Wyoming. I wake up on "strange sounds" which I had never heard anything like them before. They were loud and their echos bounced from every direction. I was so puzzled about where they were coming from and gave me chills. For some reason I felt like I was in Jurassic Park or something.
Yes! Makes me think of the raptors hunting vocals (presumably backsourced from birds like this?). Amazing lineage …
Yep, Wyoming is my home, and I hear these almost every morning spring thru fall... 😊
Growing up in Florida, you tend to have a love/hate relationship with these beautiful creatures.
They do like to stand in front of your car and refuse to move 😅
😢😅😊😅8
😅😊Belissa Escobedo
They do that here in Utah too
What??? You’re kidding! Every time I’ve ever encountered these here in MN they fly away before you can even get 100 feet from them! They’re super skiddish and will NOT let you get close. Wonder why that is
@@paulspomer16 lol. Maybe something to do with the time of year we encounter them. I see them in the lower elevation meadows of the western Uintas (where I spend most of my time) in the summer. Maybe they’re extra bold because they have young they’re defending in the area?
It could just be me but, these sounds remind me of the dilophosaurus in Jurassic Park
I mean what else made those sounds
They're dinosaurs with long legs
Well, birds are dinosaurs! :)
We just had some in my backyard and before I knew they were even there all I heard was this and I was like: "What the hell was that? A fucking dinosaur?" 😂😂😂
@@The.RAGE.Master I just saw 4 today for the first time and thought the same😂😂
I moved out of the twin cities and first time I heard one I was like wtf was that ?!
Am I in Jurassic park ?!
Well, for goodness sakes! When we first moved to Homer in 2000, we rented a condo from Dr. and Mrs. Sayers on Lake Beluga. I kept being awakened by these "crazy bird sounds." I thought they were loons! I was not familiar with either bird. Now, 17 years later, I learn that it was sandhill cranes driving me bonkers, waking me every morning and then, I'd hear them again every evening .. always when the float planes were taking off, and then as they returned much later. :-) Learn something new every day ... and decade! Thank you for sharing!
loons sound more sad and mournful
cranes go crrrrrrane
Just saw a huge flock of these things. Never seen them before and thought they were geese because they were so high.
Couldn’t figure out what they were doing because their flight pattern was so weird.
And then they were making this noise.
Pretty cool to know I saw something so different
They are such a treat to see and hear arnt they
I love how you can always hear them before you see them. So when I hear them I keep my eye on the sky and sure enough they appear like magic. It's beautiful!
Straight up dinosaurs.
I've always called them pterodactyls. 😄
When I was a kid I thought these noises were pterodactyls and they were going to eat me
I just bought a place in the UP and was out night hiking with my pups. Yeah, I'm full grown and still pretty sure they are going to eat me. Haha
Great video of a magnificent bird.
Note the echos from around 0:30 to 1:00 - these birds are LOUD. Several families of them live in my in-laws' neighborhood in Florida. They come strolling through the yards, poking at the ground like in this video.
They look and sound like dinosaurs. I'm seeing more and more here in Illinois. My dog was shocked 😂
Birds are amazing. We know so little
I am so excited ! A pair of these birds just flew through my back yard! I had to come in and look them up having heard their call as they were flying over.. I am so happy that they are here. I have lived here for over 43 years and this was the first time they have decided to come here
When I had them in my yard I played this and they where talking to it.
Tammy Mleko that's what I just did, they went nuts
Lmao same here!
Yeah me too XD
Omg Im gonna do that
Eight years later and this video is still being watched! Such a gorgeous bird. And the baby is sooo cute. The fall/winner scenery is gorgeous. Saw a pair of Sand cranes about 3 weeks ago in North Florida. They are stunning creatures. Thank you for posting this video.
Wow quite a fascinating sound. Another bird that makes different vocal sounds is native to Southern Africa. It’s called a hadada ibis also known as Hadeda. They sound like humans making sounds 😂 and singing/being goofballs
The echo is fabulous . Thanks.
The most beautiful sound on the Earth.
try a loon
Listen to the Loon call...
The time of the dinosaurs would have been freaky.
I have two of these beautiful birds and I woke up to this noise today. I thought something was being harmed..
It's very loud and alarming, but I love them.
They have very long tracheas which allows their calls to be heard long distances.
@@aknina51 I heard these while I was waking up my dad and I was freaking out telling everybody
Amazing life forms all ima say
Am I the only one that enjoys waking up to this? Hahaha
your not the only one
Saw and heard these for the first time the other day. Really cool :)
I live in Illinois. Every once in a while, I would hear these guys flying in the sky. Couldn’t tell if they were storks, herons, or cranes. Glad I know now!
Oh my gosh this is what I saw today lol. I was just walking and heard these dinosaur-like noises and 3 of these flew up and away. It freaked me out lol.
Lucky you! Yes, dinosaur-like is apt.
Im so confused because i assume what we think dinosaurs sound like is reverse engineered from birds like this ? everyones saying they sound like dinosaurs (me included) but humans like the sound engineers on jurassic pk derived what dinosaurs maybe sounded like from them ? i find it so funny-we hear the real thing and think of the cgi one, theyre like the voice actor behind the scenes in our dino movies 😂
I saw two at Westchester Lagoon in Anchorage today! Had to look up how they sound.
Crazy dinosaurs. O.O
They are the last of the dinosaurs
@@gojizard704 theres dinosaurs everywhere though
@@Palpo_pics thats what i meant...birds are the last of the dinosaurs
Blessed to live in Alaska we’re I listen to these things all night
This amazes me to find out theyre native to alaska.. I grew up in florida and theyre everywhere. Clearly, they can live in any weather 😅
@@dokwalk for sure haha😂
Hell yeah Nina with the crane sounds. These cranes are dope. Kind of cute too
i'm in illinois and woke up to two of them doing these noises in unison!! so cool
These are the sounds the dinosaurs made.
How the fuck do you know what a dinosaur sounds like?! Lol
@@Mindbender55 because dinosaurs are physically incapable of roaring because that needs a larynx which birds crocs and dinosaurs DONT HAVE so they either hissed bellowed honked quacked or...theroetically made something similar to this. And if you think that sounds stupid look at the oviraptors from dinosaur planet....the accuracies were way ahead of their time
@@Mindbender55 Birds are technically dinosaurs.
Played these to the ones in my backyard and they went nuts
Same!!!
Nice, there's one outside my house rn!
I had one pair walk up to my late mother wheel chair and just sat there
I seen a lot of them here in Colorado a lot
That's a Mothman!!
We have some in our neighborhood. They wake us up sometimes. Good old sandhill cranes
It's April and one flew over my apartment and freaked me out. Lol I had to come here in Minnesota and check to see if it was a crane or not lol they are loud. Thought it was something else at first. I've always seen them out on the lakes in the summer mostly and in Ireland a lot too. Glad to see them here now after all that snow we've had for 7 or 8 months now.
We have These Beautiful Majestic beings out here
Thanks for posting, interesting call they make...
They sound and look like a combination of a Canadian goose and a red-headed woodpecker
Their call reminds me of the original raptors from Jurassic Park. though I imagine a higher pitched version would be great for a swarm of compies (Compsognathus)
sounds like pterodactyls
Where have you heard pterodactyl calls? Curious. 🤔
Jurassic Park duh
Its 2Am I smoked before letting the dog out. I just moved to the country. My lands got a creek and marsh shit I call my swamp. Well, I never heard that noise till now. I was taking a leak with the dog after a good days work. I heard a wild ass scream, so I shined my flashlight twords my brush pile. I assumed what I saw was the windigo running and screaming while changing shape. So I put it away, ran to my dog, picked er up, and went right inside. Now Im balls deep researching birds, animals, and shit. I think what I really saw was a deer at the same time as hearing one of these birds freaking out, and because of that, I got piss on my legg and ruined my dogs' potty time. thanks for reading. I was honestly very scared till after a shower and snack.
I was just chased by one of these in my apartment's parking lot and I found this video to show my friend I'm not a baby for being scared sh!tless afterwards
I love these birds
That's how fast they are? They just walk through my yard making noise at 5am. Aren't even afraid of cars.
This sound chase the cranes from digging up my lawn lol😂😂
I have 2 of these in my backyard and they never stop calling eachother. it gets very annoying
Had one of these fly over me once that started doing vocalization’s just above me and it scared the absolute shit out of me at first lmao…surprisingly loud
saw one of these on my way home from school
Whenever I hear this noise I know my door hinge needs wd40
Never heard them but I see them everyday omw to work
So unique!
Fun fact don't play this with full sound in front of them
i would flip if someone started playing human sounds on my porch 😂
😮when I first heard these beautiful and extremely loud creatures which is an understatement! 👀👻🦖🧠, it was in 2022 and my whole family and I were so horrified hearing them in the pitch black night in the direction of the very close lake in our newly moved into neighborhood, and we all didn’t know if we were all about to be attacked and eaten up by raptor dinosaurs 🦖 bcs the cranes all sounded like the sound effects in the Jurassic Park movies when all the raptors would roar out and then kill the humans savagely! We couldn’t sleep all night, and then the next day we asked some neighbors and they told us it was just the Sandhill cranes!🍿 😮😢😅😂🎥
Very cool thanks!
I live in Sanford Florida I have the opportunity to film them for my RUclips channel
Nice video, but, I didn't hear any unison calls. If I can find a good link to a true unison call video, I'll post it.
Here, this video shows what I have been taught, as a crane count volunteer, is a unison call between a mating pair. ruclips.net/video/HeIMak-ohVk/видео.html
Check 19:00 in this video--A Fledge for Freedom. I have some other videos that do have distinct unison calls. ruclips.net/video/Z-catc2OLiU/видео.html
Wow, you do have a lot of crane videos with a real variety of information. Thank you for sharing them.
You are welcome.
why is it only in my left ear
I have a pair of these guys that live in my neighborhood and always strut about the yards
I swear I can see a swagger in their step when they’re strolling about.
I’m with you
I've had some fly over me and I always get this fear that one's going to land on me.
I used to be able to call them years ago and they’d come to me
this birds looks like gallimimus
im playing this 10 feet away from a sandhill crane lol
Like listening to dinosaurs raptors.
I work at a power plant and these guys are all over the places so I use this video to fuck with them
Is it alright if I use a short clip of these vocalizations for the purposes of sound design?
It's easy to sound like them just say "qrrrrrrah"
We have a pair and baby here in Indiana. Sadly, the chick may have been eaten by a predator.
People have suspected this bird might be what the Mothman sightings originated from. I see it!
There a prehistoric bird
so i found a craine and played this and it started calling back… 💀💀💀
absolute dinos
Cacall!!!
yea these are in my backyard just abt every day lol
my left ear loved this
fix the audio

Tall and loud
The word "vocalizations" has been pushed on all of us to undermine the idea that the other creatures are conscious (and so it's alright to kill them for any reason or no reason if we humans happen to feel like doing that). To say they are speaking would be more respectful and probably more accurate. No?
I don't know, we use the term "vocalization" for human speech as well. I think cranes have language. They are able to communicate with their colts with different calls. We do not have a full understanding of animal languages as yet, but I think we are finally coming to realize that they do have their own "languages" that we are just beginning to realize. I hope to see more research to help us understand animals and their lives and that we will instill more respect for each species in their own right.
@@aknina51
For sure. It’s technically correct.
I think the particular use when referring to the speech of non humans is intended to promote a feeling of separateness and superiority on the part of the humans (who else?) who are doing the reading. A psychological manipulation. Not that you or the author of this video have that intention personally but I think there are some people who would not want sympathy for the others to increase generally.
Good gravy! You have invented nefarious intent in your own head. The term "vocalization" is commonly used to describe non-word communication. You deciding that the term must have been "pushed" on us so that we can disrespectfully kill other creatures does not make it so. Maybe you could just enjoy the excellent video and comment on the cranes like the rest of us.
Yes. Exactly.
Speaking? Sure, one of them asked me for directions the other day.
This is the most annoying bird in the world

I played this to a crane and they started looking around lol when they ran off one of them left a feather behind and i took it for myself
Nature is amazing and to think we came from it aswell
