- The European Parliament has narrowly elected Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission.
The German defence minister will become the first woman to hold the post when she replaces Jean Claude Juncker in November.
She's a stalwart supporter of European integration and close ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

News reports said that the German Defence Minister , Ursula von der Leyen was narrowly elected President of the European Commission on 16 July 2019, by a majority of 383 members of the 751. She will be the first woman to head the Commission on 1 November , 2019 for a five year term. The message that the election outcome has given is the narrow margin of majority electing Ursula von der Leyen , suggesting lack of impressive unity among the members of the European Union.
