About 400 million Europeans are eligible to vote in June to elect their representatives to the European Parliament.
Far-right parties once considered fringe are predicted to make major gains, reflecting a growing trend of support for far-right parties across Europe. In some countries like Italy, the Netherlands, Finland and Hungary, populist right-wing parties have even won elections or entered into government.
How is the rise of the far right changing Europe’s political landscape? And what’s at stake for the rest of the world?
This week on UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill talks to Cas Mudde, political scientist and professor at the University of Georgia, and Marta Lorimer, a fellow in European politics at the London School of Economics European Institute, to assess the rise of Europe’s far right and how it’s influencing mainstream politics.

I would argue far right fascists (cooperation Big Business and governments = we dictate what you do) has governed the West for years in cooperation with far left communists (we dictate your ideology/mind). Meanwhile most people want REAL, normal right (security of borders, small business opportunities) or left (peace, care and education) in government.

What are the core values of these Western countries? If one party says “woke” and Immigrations issues is not “western values” but the opposition party says otherwise, then what is really a “western values” when there are many citizens amongst those countries claim that the far right do not share of those values. The populists (Europe - USA) seem to have picked on immigration and minorities and use the "fear" explanation for most things. This is terrifying. I've lived in Austria. It's a wonderful country full of wonderful people. I can't imagine them turning into a hateful, far-right country. Why can't the world pick normal, moderate people to run their countries?? Whatever beef you have with your government doesn't deserve the answer of, let's hand the keys to a far-right party. We're dealing with the psychology of contraction. As our economy shrinks due to the decline of CHEAP energy, we're being asked to support open borders. This doesn't make sense when jobs are already scarce. We can offer some help, but we can't let everyone in, especially if they don't share Western values. It’s like trying to bring more people onto a sinking ship-it’s not a winning strategy.
