      I just don't consider this match. It was a really bad match from both sides that Serena should have won, even playing ugly tennis, one way or another... because it was her last Wimbledon and tricky first rounds where she's not herself have happened throughout her carreer and she used to manage those situations quite well. This time she showed she didn't have the fighting spirit in her which could lead her to the next rounds where she could maybe find her game again and who knows what would have happened with that draw. The match against Vinci was more traumatic, I think also for her, because that was a real match that she lost with an opponent that was playing great and it was a semifinal. This one doesn't feel that painful to me.

  • @fans-ed1td

    Tan's tactic was quite clear. Slice the ball in order to stay in the rallies... thus making Serena work harder. And stand very far behind the baseline to return and get the ball back (with the slice).

      Serena could have a tricky first round (or second, third...) and then win the tournament. What she wasn't able to do in her carreer post-2017 was the ability to come back in a match and win it. She lost all her gs finals in straight sets. She attempted a comeback against Andreescu but from 1-5 it was hard to do that. In her 20s she won a lot of matches and Grand Slams coming back from first set disasters. I remember the match against Petrova at the AO in 2007. She almost lost that, but she came back and then beat Maria in the final playing some of the best tennis of her life.

    I know most people don't want to say it, but ... Serena, for all her determination to win, did not suffciently control her weight the last few years of her career. The power and game were still there, but ... Tan made her move and wore her down. That doesn't happen to a Serena who's even fifteen pounds lighter. It's her own fault that she never equaled Court.

    • @dayzour123

      I agree who knows why it was so hard for her to drop the weight maybe she had other issues going on but I will say this 2021 Serena was heading in the right direction she was fittest she has ever been since post baby she actually put in the work and it showed. Following her injury comeback the following year Serena did not focus on fitness she should had gave herself more time to get in best shape possible if she wanted to go out with a bang Serena rushed so it can over with she was better off not coming back if she wasn’t gonna put 💯 in

    Tan was the better player that day! But I disagree with people who say Serena had trouble playing people with this type of game. Serena OWNED Vinci H2H despite the 2015 US Open, and always beat players like Justin Henin, Franchesa Schiavone, Ash Barty, Amelie Mauresmo that had variety in her shots. Serena was clearly not fit here. She adjusts her game when she play those variety players.

      @milvao3400 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@flylikealamb9260 I would not say that she would have won against any other type of player, but for sure she would have more chances. The point isn't the slice shots, but the "ugly tennis" that some players are able to do and do it successfully. Vinci and Graf slice the backhand but they don't play ugly, they just play well. This match was a lot like the Brengle match in Auckland. When Serena doesn't have her shot and the opponent plays ugly, it's hard for her to find the shots and win the match. If there was a Giorgi on the other side or a player with a heavier ball, for sure Serena would have found a sort of rhythm and way more chances to win it.
