It takes guts to visit these rather dangerous and poor areas. It is interesting and informational in terms of learning different cultures. Kudos to you guys! Stay safe! It isn't just Melrose Arch that isn't necessarily affected by load shedding. Most hotels, malls, shopping centres etc will have generators or inverters. That's why you don't experience it there. Most small businesses and non franchise or independent restaurants don't have that back up. It's why where you were in Maboneng they probably didn't have. It's mostly independent restaurants and small businesses. Most big businesses, shopping malls and franchise restaurants or fast food places like Nandos, McDonalds, KFC and the more sit down restaurants in malls and shopping centres have back ups. The flickering you see is when it's switching over to the generator or back up source.
We experienced load shedding every evening at the Marriott in Melrose Arch. But they did have generators so it took about one to two minutes for power to come back on. And then we think it also goes off in the middle of the night as well because the a/c would feel like it’s off for a while while we were sleeping.
We experienced load shedding every evening at the Marriott in Melrose Arch. But they did have generators so it took about one to two minutes for power to come back on. And then we think it also goes off in the middle of the night as well because the a/c would feel like it’s off for a while while we were sleeping.
@@AlwaysBeChanging Correct. What I meant to say was that it doesn't affect you as much when there's a generator or inverter. 😊 So yes there's still load shedding but won't feel the effects due to the back ups. In some hotels, they may have batteries with inverters which are an instant switch over versus a diesel generator. So you may feel some areas don't get at all but it isn't so. It's just that those hotels or businesses have an awesome back up system. 😊 Enjoy your travels.
Upscale neighborhoods get little to no power cuts and if your neighborhood is near an industrial area they get little to no power cuts and also in upscale neighborhoods there is a private/public partnership with the city to get more power sources like solar, etc. so upscale neighborhoods are less dependent on the national grid of which is the problem. You will see this too in major neighborhoods in cape town and estates across the country.
@AlwaysBeChanging Perhaps they have generators or inverters. We have an inverter battery system at home and don't really experience loadshedding anymore.
It's more the fact that large businesses and "upscale" neighborhoods have generators and inverters. It doesn't mean they don't have load shedding. They do. They just have back ups.

Thank you soooo much for presenting what part of the inner city of Johannesburg looks like. A few things I would need to point out which can kind of mislead some people is that Yeoville and Mabs (Maboneng) are two different neighborhoods, despite the proximity. Similarly, while I believe it is beautiful that you made an effort to integrate the use of indigenous South African languages it is imperative to specify which one it is, the use of the "clicking sound language" is generic and may be regarded as rather offensive due to the fact that there are several variances such as languages that the Khoi and San speak. The language you are referring to is Xhosa pronounced Qho-suh. I mean no offense and just wanted to help anyone who may want to visit in future by clarifying how we can prohibit cultural essentialism which may come off as ignorant. I hope this helps out and that you all enjoyed your stay, thank you for a beautiful video once again :)
Been fortunate to have gone on safaris in several different countries and hands down my time at Kruger was EPIC. Assuming you are headed there, have an amazing time!
