Enlistment isn't compulsory in India, but there is a huge amount of youth who enlist due to the patriarchal nature of majority of our country. It's a really commendable profession that we can sympathize with and respect, however their contribution never really hits you unless you experience it. The desire and resolve to dedicate your life to your country is highly admirable, but it's heartbreaking for the people who live after their loved ones are gone.

Nope, India does not have conscription. People opt to join the army, and of course there are benefits provided to the soldiers and their families for making this choice, but it's definitely a choice.
