was your speedometer needle bouncing a little? my old dodge does that real bad when it gets cold.

The grease around the speedo cable gets real thick in the cold, on those older mechanical speedo's. If it gets too bad it can strain the cable and break it. It will come apart and you can clean and lube it with a thinner grease or head for warmer climate's.
It is pretty easy to fix. Unhook the cable and then pull the cable from the sheath give it a good wipe down with a clean rag and WD-40 then "lightly" coat it with white grease and put it back together. Problem solved.
