Holy crap, I just realized how much more epic “I counterspell your counterspell” moments are going to be when someone fires off a cone of cold only to have the enemy throw up a wall of fire, but at the last second a nearby ally douses the fire with create water allowing the cone of cold to go through. @@user-uv6qu3wb5dNot really. You gotta be original and describe how you do it. Your dm must accept your spell duel to get a chance to roll. And even if you succed and "counter" the spell, it feels less bad for the caster, because you and the enemy both spent approximately the same ressources and you can still do something else on your turn (unlike dnd).

I was initially apprehensive about the level range (cap at 10 then "prestige" levels) but the more you explain and the more I think about it the more I like it. I kind of imagine that you become a "master thief" at level 10, yeah that makes sense, but beyond that? It's all about what else you can bring in to the skill set, it's not limiting the class it's condensing it down and then opening up the customization floodgates, even if you stuck with only your class features and talents to level 10 and played a "stereotypical" version of your class, nothing wrong with that, but after that you get to flavor how your adventurer is a standout and unique. I love this. Also the total modularity of the system I think is amazing for GM/DM homebrew I love the ideas of creating my own talents, items, spells, anything because there is a framework built in to the system for it.
Also, death's door... I am wanting to switch my group to DC20 almost for this feature alone... I have been wanting this in my games for years.. I HATE death saves/unconscious player characters in combat.. it is not engaging at all, the player loses all agency and if they do manage to just get back up after their ordeal, they are back to pretty much 100% combat efficiency, I hate it so much. This mechanic I think is the top thing I think about DC20 combat that's a sleeper hit, the 4 action point thing is great, but this *chef's kiss* and the way it scales with your prime and how modular it is so you can have unique features that play with it, and the impactful moments I keep imagining at the table... I have to stop gushing about it.

I've never had a character at a level higher than 10 that didn't start at that level for a game. We also usually don't do campaigns that bring back old characters, each one is usually a totally new story with new characters.

    • @BW022
      @BW022 2 месяца назад

Back in the 1e days (1980s) I managed probably a half-dozen parties from 1 to 15+, typically home campaigns or ToEE + SL + AtG + QotDW. However, things are different when you have summers where you and friends can spend 12+ hours a day, 5 days a week, for 50+ days on the games and have a five or six parties die off for each one which reaches this. In 3.5e, in Living Arcanis I managed a character and group for 19th, but the last five levels were a blur.
I think the DC20 approach is a good thing. Focus on 1-10 and then add additional rules for slowly gaining more abilities from existing stuff as you level. This solves several issues...
      1. DC20 and players aren't spending a huge amount of time on tons of high-level spells, features, balance issues, monsters, etc. which won't be played.
      2. Power doesn't scale exponentially (or even linearly) so DMs aren't struggling to run and run campaigns/modules.
      3. Combat shouldn't get much slower -- you don't have massive health pools to fight through, hundreds of spells/abilities to remember, different rules, etc.

Monster Abilities, Attacks, Items, etc. As a GM that tends to play dark gritty adventures, there's never monsters that fit my almost dark souls like world and thus have to home brew my own. As an "outside the box" sort of player, my biggest piece of advice for DC20 would be if there were a lot of opportunities for tactics. If the Dungeon Coach was able to keep the fast terns and the action-packed gameplay, DC20 would be perfect. Some rules for tactics could go like this: maybe there is a spell that could allow you to know the weaknesses and strengths of your enemy ( is it weak to fire or cold damage); maybe using the environment in interesting ways could deal more damage than if you just attacked; maybe doing two damage types to the same enemy in the same round could have some sort of effect; or maybe there was a rule for flanking.
To pull of what I have just described, I think it would be worthwhile to take inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons 6th Edition as they mentioned in the new edition there will be many opportunities for tactics.

In the mid 80s to mid 90s, I had a group that played AD&D (switching to 2e as its books were published). In one campaign, my character got to level 36, and that was after he changed class at level 11 (There was a weird way to add another class later on in that edition). HOWEVER, levels in AD&D do not do as much as they do in later editions. Most levels are "dead levels" unless you are a caster. There is no capstone ability.

I wonder if there should be a bonus for whatever attribute is your prime to make a might based fighter feel different from a intelligence based fighter. My thought would be that a Might based character gets +1 damage on each attack, an Agility based character gets +1 action point per turn, an Intelligence based character gets an additional spell/technique known, and a Charisma based character gets +1 Stamina/Mana point. This would make each Attribute feel more impactful, and an agility based wizard is different than an intelligence based wizard.

I'll be running with the stats Might, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Insight, no prime modifiers, and then I'll come up with more interesting ways to have different stats affect the combat strategies than simply adding CHA to attack rolls.
    Everything else is literally perfect.
    Action points are perfect.
Spell duels are perfect, and there's no understating how impactful this is gonna be on gameplay. I REALLY WISH there was some similar mechanic for martials, but weapon-weilding classes have always been super barebones. I can homebrew something, just to elevate martial combat design to the same level as the rest of your amazing system.
There's so much less number crunching like holy shit it makes DnD look like being hired as a computer. I mean the old job title, not the product.
The class design flavor (as you are surely aware) is ON POINT, especially with warlocks. You are the only creator who I've seen nail warlocks in any TTRPG system, ever.
Classes have unique options that allow for differentiation. I don't need to convince anyone that this is of paramount importance.
    The multiclass system looks fantastic.
Leaving everything at lvl 10 is a good decision, it was never very fun past that point anyways. We know it gets out of hand, we know it gets out of hand.
Attribute capstones and talents make progression so much more interesting and smooth, as you described at some point.
The death's door mechanic is similar to something I'd already homebrewed (and it turned out well, so I'm sure it'll work in the new system as well).
I'll be joining your kickstarter ranks once I get some money saved up. Until then.

I love how your classes feel like the fantasy. As D&D "advances" it feels homogenized, like classes have less identity.

The Prime Attribute concerned me at first, so much it made me resistant to giving DC20 a try. The reason it is actually a good rule is because people will always come up with a way to make it work, and that can be part of the fun. Even the high Intelligence Barbarian. I remember an Edge I made as a joke for Savage Worlds. An Edge is like a Feat in D&D. I called it NERD RAGE! (all caps and the exclamation point) and it let the character go Berserk like the Berserk edge (basically Barbarian rage) but would swap the characters Smarts with their Strength while Berserk. This is balanced as Smarts is how you stop the berserker rage on your own. It was fun with the one genius character we used it for. That could be a way to look at the Barbarian with a high Intelligence. He just has NERD RAGE!

You also see a rule capping how high the prime can go based on level... making us increase other ability scores if we're being bounders

I mean, prime still sucks identity of all atributes, who cares what stat you use for your attack rolls, you always roll a +3

    • @grr-OUCH
      @grr-OUCH 2 месяца назад +2

@@user-uv6qu3wb5d I understand where you are coming from, but your attributes still do other things. Many games get around it anyway. For example if you want to use a different attribute for your class in Pathfinder, you pick an Archetype that does it. In 5e, we see characters multiclassing only to classes that match their character's best attribute, even if other classes fit the character better. DC20 skips the min-maxing and just says "it does not matter for class features". It still matters for the rest of the game.

I like the look of this system, but one thing that seems like a really crappy cop-out is the Awareness skill. It's just tied to... anything? "Man, I'm so strong, I can see far away." I get the design issues with the Awareness skill. Perception can seem like a must have skill, so just letting anyone use it instead of tying to one of four skills is convenient, but pretty verisimilitude breaking. Even Pathfinder's system of tying it to specific classes seems better than this, and I wasn't a huge fan of that either.

  • @1gengabe
    @1gengabe 2 месяца назад +2

You should probably reevaluate initiative, in comparison with the rest of the system it feels wildly out of place, it isn't intuitive, it feels restrictive like a rogue will be sneaking all the time to optimize initiative position, and it has "Got ya" rules like "um actually I was doing this" and the GM goes "no you where clearly doing this".
(this is a modified Initiative idea I heard before, idk where)
I suggest everyone rolls initiative at the start of the session, then they are in that set order, or they pick an order, then whoever acts first in the combat is the first in line and it follows the back and forth system you have where the GM just picks an order for enemies that is locked in at the top of the round, or the enemies are just pick and choose for max GM freedom, and the ability to have enemies make poor choices, or storytelling in combat like killing a Banner/leader enemy allows for the normal enemies to become more chaotic in order because they have not leader, if an Enemy starts a combat then it starts with the first player in the combat.
Simplified: players pick a team initiative order, if player 3 in that order starts the fight the fight order is 3, 4, 5, 1, 2. The GM picks an enemy to act in between each of the players turns, keeping that Player, Enemy, Player, turn flip flop. If an enemy starts the combat player order is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, if there are 10 enemies and 5 players some of those enemies don't act, or the enemies could Team up to take a turn together as one unit.
though this isn't refined, I think it fits DC20 more than the current initiative system, it is player driven, it falls to the background, it has no delay from RP to Combat, and it is intuitive, you can have the players sit in their initiative order or just go clockwise around the table

I know coach teaches/taught math so I hope and pray that the math in DC20 works well in later levels. We all know that high level play in D#D kinda stinks. I also hope that building encounters is way better in DC20!! I am super excited for it though. Lets GO!!

I appreciate hitting my characters Max Level. In my current DnD campaign, my DM says we will be ending in a month. My character is lvl 15 Barbarian and would love for us to continue lvl 20; however, my DM and the party are wanting to move on to a new setting. I respect the table's decision, but it personally feels bad.

I've been playing with my set D&D group for 15 years. We've gone from 1-20 over 12 times with different characters. We started with pathfinder and switched to 5th edition when it came out. I know our group and I are a small percentage compared to the norm. I am very aware how 5th edition rules break down around lvl 15 and beyond, and I hope your development team really thinks about players that actually play through to the end when designing and finalizing dc20. With 5th edition, they broke their own bounded accuracy system too much. How will your team handle it? I love DC20 so far, and I wish your team all the success it deserves.

Multiclassing approach is the only thing I’ve really wrinkled my nose at so far. Sounds like it limits you to being locked into your starting class and have to sacrifice your feats to get tidbits.

I think your game might be the only game that could possibly do the Summoner fantasy justice, if it was similar to the wild shape system but you can only have 1 unit, maybe a max of 3, each getting their own action point and being able to use the player action points on them, could be a manageable setup, 2 medium creatures could feel great to control in the game, and Shaman, Artificer, and Necromancer could all technically classify as summoners, since they all store magic into various items to get them to do things, and they all have their, minions that they want to command

    Congrats on the campaign!
I've been playing D&D 3.5 for about 3 years. I have a gestault Shade who is a L19 Rogue / L10 Assassin / L5 Swordmage / L3 Swashbuckler / L1 Sorcerer. It's completely superhero at this point. lol We are sailing between game worlds to weaken Lolth's hold on other planes.
I actually kinda hate D&D, but that's what's served on Saturdays at the table. I'm GMing my second Hero System 2-year long campaign on Sundays. (The first was an alternate Earth pulp era dieselpunk Cthulhu horror setting and the current one is a dystopian future sci-fi setting. The next campaign will be a superhero setting.) All, of course, played using the same game books with no modifications required.

You should get a booster pack if your a martial taking a martial class talent and caster taking spell cast talent so it’s not always better to take talents from the opposite type of class. Lower the SP Mana and spells over all and then if you take a talent in a spell caster you get the booster pack as well

One time in college a few of us created level 20 characters in 3e in order to play a 1-shot. The game was terrible. We were incredibly overpowered and the DM had the hardest time coming up with something that was actually engaging. Each round of combat took forever as we all tried to figure out what we could actually do.
Maybe if we’d played the characters from a lower level up to level 20 it wouldn’t have been such a problem, but it was the slowest most boring game I’d ever played.

You should add a place to put the shield bonus in the character sheet. It becomes annoying to track if my fighter is constantly switching between two handed, dueling, and using a shield.

Potential variant rule for martials, I give them a deed dice of d4 and they tell me what they want to do instead of a specific martial maneuver. Would open options and reduce memorization and i give them a number to beat on their deed dice. I also increase the size of their deed dice at certain levels, both increasing their success rate and increasing the level of deed they can accomplish. Trip attack a wizard 2 on the deed dice trip attack a fellow warrior, 3 on the deed dice, trip attack the large armored ogre, 5 on the deed dice naturally gating certain features behind fighter levels. What if i want to push both archers off the ledge with by turning my reach weapon sideways not dealing damage but pushing both, doable easy like this. Just a thought coach love the game :)

I really like the multi-classing rule, and I think PF 2e also did it fairly well, barring a bit of some unneeded restriction.
Prime Modifier is interesting, but for me, I definitely like the idea of needing to balance abilities to really optimize.
Being able to play a fun character at Level 1, is absolutely amazing, and getting capstones sooner is also awesome. Though, I may have thought of making them available at 5th Level.
Death's Door is great in that you can still do stuff while being down. It's very annoying when you go down, and can't do anything at all. Also, the whack-a-mole method is kinda boring since it kinda takes the risk out of combat.
Lastly, I think the spell-sharing part of spellcasting is fantastic. And as for Counterspell... it was definitely way too strong for what it was meant to do, just like Silvery Barbs. Though Counterspell as a Wizard Feat is something I thought could be interesting.

If you are a magic class and take a talent in another magic class (or martial taking a martial talent from another class), do you still get the multiclassing starter kit? You mention that that starter kit might be "mana, cantrip, and spell". If you only get that bonus 'free' pack of abilities when you cross the line from magic to martial (or the other way) then people will be highly encouraged to get the free bonus pack and that will skew talent selection. Maybe your first talent when "crossing the line" has to be the starter kit from the other line of classes if you want the mana, cantrip, and spell (or whatever martial gives you)?
Anyway, looking forward to the beta.
