I always found the relationship between Khaine and Khorne fascinating. They’re troublingly similar yet different in their execution. Khaine appears more intelligently designed while Khorne is more primal.
Never forget that an Avatar of Khaine bellowed a challenge to a Swarmlord and in response the Swarmlord called over 2 dozen Carnifexes that proceeded to rip the Avatar to pieces. (It was probably an amazing and epic “Final Stand” battle but it was a Tyranid story. Also says a lot about the melee prowess of the Avatar when the Swarmlords best course of action was to swarm it with Carnifexes.)
An excellent reason to never underestimate the vast, coldly logical intellect of a Swarm Lord. Seems they give great consideration to cost-benefit analysis of biomass, tempered with foresight and pragmatism.
I like this detail. To add to it further, this is, in fact, the only instance so far in the lore (period) that the Swarmlord has not accepted a direct challenge/duel from an enemy elite/commander/specialist/HQ unit.

Yep it really pisses me off when they use him as a tidewater Mark to show how tough a character is. If a space Marine captain or chapter master was able to beat him. That had truly better be a group effort. Nothing short of a Primark ought to be able to take you on one-on-one
Yeah. And even for a Primarch it should be like "Oh, he lost a dozend Space Marines, had five crippled to become Dreadnoughts and still it was a close call that the Primarch could win".
The Eldar God of War is by far the most powerful weapon that dying race have to a weapon of mass destruction, and a constant reminder of fading glory of their empire and people.
Good things come to those who wait. I have critical feelings towards GW but they at least are doing something awesome with the new Eldar models. The Avatar finally looks like the threat he should be.
I’m waiting to watch this on the TV when I get home from work… not that I would EVER secretly watch this at work because I’m a good employee… I’ve upvoted and commented on this video in anticipation before even seeing it. GW should hire Baldermort To me He is the Voice of the 40K universe.
I like this new perspective. It could be one of the biggest secrets hidden within the Black Library. To know all that was lost during the War in Heaven. To know all the ways in which your race, your people disappointment their creators. To know that it was not just your ancestor’s decadence, but a lack of faith in the pantheon tailor-made to serve you. A pantheon now broken, swallowed, and forgotten. That’s enough to shatter the Eldar’s gargantuan ego for all time.
I started playing Eldar in 1996 and have eagerly sought all the lore I could on that faction. This is the best explanation I've found on the origin and essence of Kaela Mensha Khaine. Furthermore, your musings on the future on the Eldar pantheon give me hope for a resurgence of the Eldar. The galaxy will tremble as its once-undisputed masters rise to reclaim what was once theirs! Of course, GW being GW, this is foolish thinking, because anything that distracts from Space Marines must be excised from the lore. Still, you've restored a great deal of my enthusiasm for the faction, and for that I thank you.
Have to appreciate Khaine - watching as the monstrous Slaanesh approached, gorged on Eldar souls from gods and mortals alike- he could have run like Cegorach but instead he stood and fought.....sometimes you just have to stand your ground, even if you know you will lose 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

I find it funny Baldemort touches on the subject of IRL chaos magick when talking about WH40K non-Chaos lore. Your explanation of the Aeldari "gods" is akin to the IRL chaos magick concept of "egregores", thought-forms shared amongst a group. Funny how the chaos magick concept of "servitors" shows up in WH40K lore as cyborgs given simple tasks.
I loved my Eldar armies, made one for 40K, 3 for 40K Epic, and even had an Eldar fleet for Battlefleet Gothic. In 40k an avatar of Khaine is like the first boss of a videogame. Challenging for sure, but nowhere close to being the strongest. Khaine from the War in Heaven however is a different story.

Unfortunatly an Avatar of Khaine, is nothing more than a "Worf syndrome" plot device, used to make a named character look powerful by easily smashing an Avatar.
Technically it’s a shard of Khaine. So yeah it would be weak as shit. Even though honestly I would love to see a much more stronger piece of Khaine kick some ass.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the moment before She Who Thirst struck down Asuryan, he split as much of his power as he could muster into the craftworlders, which had the dual effect of damaging their fertility rate, but also re-augmenting their now (post-fall) hampered psychic potential. This is why the craftworlders are known as the Asuryani (Children of Asuryan). Asuryan was known as the Phoenix king, and Phoenixs have a reputation of coming back from ashes. I also like the idea that Vaul in fear of Khaine or some other forces split his power into the Talismen of Vaul and might also make a resurgence. Khaine, Cegorach, Ynnead, Isha, Asuryan, Vaul - Maybe She who thirst didn't do as thorough job as she thought.

You've uploaded this at such a good time. For the new model reveal but also answering my questions about him before I even asked. I wondered why Kaine was a little under powered in Dawn of War forcing me to think outside the box more than brute force my way to victory, and now I know why. I hope one day we shall see the Eldar Gods returned to their glory for I would love to see their power on the fields of battle. How they'd affect every army. Also, that last image. Did that happen or is that just a fan made picture? Already I can hear my friend who is an insane Neptune fan gush at the sight of the image as I remain in silent annoyance and madness. Spare me a ship so I may leave this planet temporarily? I must hear the end of his heretical chanting!

the only thing that gets me in most of the books is the inconsistancy of the power level, The avatar alongside the swarm lord are used by the authors to show how powerfull a charater is, but they are killed so often that it means nothing
Absolutely, I agree. In case you didn’t know, this is a trope called “The Worf Effect” Named after the Star Trek character, who is supposedly the ‘ultimate warrior’ but loses to most villains in the series to build hype.
I agree and disagree, you are absolutely correct but I do not read a scene where either die that seems pointless or easy- in fact the impression I get is that they are so powerful and important that absolutely everything you’ve got has to be thrown at them or everything is lost. Sadly like your best model, it can’t shine because if it does I am dead. Period.

On a less serious note, if they were ever to try to rescue Isha one of the following would happen. 1.) They reach the Garden and the Typhus appears. He kicks the Avatar in the shin, causing it to fall over and then a bunch of Plague Marines stomp it to death. 2.) Typhus and Co. appear and infect it with plagues, killing it. 3.) Lucius randomly appears and kills it in a duel, just to show how good he is. 4.) Avatar kills Lucius and then becomes Lucius. 5.) Avatar trips and falls on the there and dies. 6.) Avatar meets Abaddon and since neither ever win both just slap each other for eternity. I could go on, but I think you all got the idea.
Yes, there is a dark intent and drive to Khaela Mensha Khaine. However, the Dire Avengers represent his graceful aspects. I'd say he does have an honourable side, although he has a lot of malice. The Eldar are a funny bunch, so we can't ever fully relate to them!
One thing about the end: I really like the idea of an eldar resurgence. I don’t even care for eldar that much but I like the idea that may never come of every factions arms race. Orks turning back into krork. Necron digging up their old doomsday weapons, primarchs coming back (and maybe big E?), Tau ever expanding their understanding of tech and AI, tyranid getting to eat a bit of everything and learn from it. Eldar also need their big end of days move, like the revival of some of their gods.
Due to the similarities between khorne and khaine, I find it fascinating that no one ever make the comparison between an avatar of khaine and lords of skulls. Both of them parallel being an anchor for their gods in the material world avatar for fragments of khaine and lord of skulls as the armor of the blood thirsters(which are like smaller cells of khorne), the avatar bleeds lava and breath fire while the lord of skulls exhaust some kind of alchemical blood that boils victims alive and spit out skulls, their melee weapons hold humiliated souls wrestling for release the avatar’s being khaine’s and the lord’s being of the most deadliest murderers. But for all their parallels the starkest of contrast between them is how their factions view them and their creation. The avatar is the collective malice of all the eldar in the infinity circuit concentrated into an Exarch to invoke khaine. This sacrifice of the Exarch is considered one of, if not the noblest thing for craft world eldars as they call it the ritual of the young king harkening to eldanesh the greatest of eldar heroes, by giving the sacrificed Exarch the young king title. Chaos however sees the lord of skulls in a more industrialized light, the dark mechanicum has endless production lines of captured slaves and arena pits to wheat out the weak for only the strong can be its sacrifice, and the sacrifices die stripped of any dignity, humanity in the cruelest of torture. There is no respect given to the warriors sacrificed unlike the normal khornate honoring of worthy men, only defilement. The lord of skulls’s morale boost on the battle field unlike the avatar of khaine doesn’t stems from it having an agent of their god watching over them, instead it’s because it causes untold amounts of senseless destruction in its march basically being a tank with an upper body. Even the demon inhabits it uses it like a tool, no deeper meaningful bond like the avatar.
Y’know, I never thought about it, but the Eldar gods being thought-forms, or tulpas, makes a ton of sense. No other faction would be as capable of that sort of creation.
7:04 Fun fact, I actually own that Avatar of Khaine model pictured at this timestamp. It's got a short spear which I quite like. Have been planning to add the colorful regalia and some blood effects to the hand. I play Biel-Tan aspect warriors so I want the headdress to be even more colorful than normal. Lot of purple and turquoise in my army (used to call it Ill-Kaithe before I took a liking to freehand thorny vines)...
Say what you will about him, but was always one of my favorite units in DoW. Loved watching him towering over the battlefield and swathing through the fodder. Muahahahahaaa!!!

The origin of 'Aeldari' is that GW couldn't trademark Eldar... and changed it to 'Eldar-y'. Eldary. Sandy Mitchell, who found this hilarious, even made fun of it in his latest Ciaphas Cain book.

So you're saying that in the far future, where there is no time for peace, there are at least 4 factions one or two moves away from upgrading their armies to become unstoppable killing machines? All inclusive of course, can't them pay for drinks while they're awaiting the end.
@@baldermort Thats on GW for not staying consistent, each edition changes something. It went form Isha being kidnapped by Nurgle to some demon called the Pox fulcrum doing the same thing.
I have two points, as it relates to the Avatar of khaine from your perspective that you have given us. Keeping in mind that these are just words on paper written by people putting that aside. Could it be the Avatar of khaine consumed too much of the original Power making the avatar weaker each time that it has been summoned. Without the Avatar feeding it can not replenishing any of its power, making the Avatar weaker with each incarnation; eventually & possibly reaching a point where it cannot be summoned at all. Second point is it possible within the lore & by your reading of the lore. If you take all the shards of Kane and put them back together would that be enough to at least for lack of a better word heal the Avatar of khaine to be one cohesive Godlike being again, even if it's not at the same amount of power as that requires as you say a prayer & sacrifice By the Eladr race in mass once again. As a side note from a religious & magickal perspective this makes a lot of sense.

Whenever the Eldar bring out the Avatar of Khaine in the Dawn of War series they talk a big game but it’s so easy to defeat. Classic Eldar.
Thats because every faction is easy to beat as a human player ... its how they make there games. :(
But thankfully community modders made the Apocalypse mod to make things more fun.
Unfortunatly an Avatar of Khaine, is nothing more than a "Worf syndrome" plot device, used to make a named character look powerful by easily smashing an Avatar.
Technically it’s a shard of Khaine. So yeah it would be weak as shit. Even though honestly I would love to see a much more stronger piece of Khaine kick some ass.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the moment before She Who Thirst struck down Asuryan, he split as much of his power as he could muster into the craftworlders, which had the dual effect of damaging their fertility rate, but also re-augmenting their now (post-fall) hampered psychic potential. This is why the craftworlders are known as the Asuryani (Children of Asuryan). Asuryan was known as the Phoenix king, and Phoenixs have a reputation of coming back from ashes.
I also like the idea that Vaul in fear of Khaine or some other forces split his power into the Talismen of Vaul and might also make a resurgence.
Khaine, Cegorach, Ynnead, Isha, Asuryan, Vaul - Maybe She who thirst didn't do as thorough job as she thought.

I picked up an old epic Avatar for 2 £ yesterday! Just in time as always, I needed to learn of this mighty Majesty.
You've uploaded this at such a good time. For the new model reveal but also answering my questions about him before I even asked.
I wondered why Kaine was a little under powered in Dawn of War forcing me to think outside the box more than brute force my way to victory, and now I know why. I hope one day we shall see the Eldar Gods returned to their glory for I would love to see their power on the fields of battle. How they'd affect every army.
Also, that last image. Did that happen or is that just a fan made picture?

the only thing that gets me in most of the books is the inconsistancy of the power level, The avatar alongside the swarm lord are used by the authors to show how powerfull a charater is, but they are killed so often that it means nothing

I agree and disagree, you are absolutely correct but I do not read a scene where either die that seems pointless or easy- in fact the impression I get is that they are so powerful and important that absolutely everything you’ve got has to be thrown at them or everything is lost. Sadly like your best model, it can’t shine because if it does I am dead. Period.

On a less serious note, if they were ever to try to rescue Isha one of the following would happen.
1.) They reach the Garden and the Typhus appears. He kicks the Avatar in the shin, causing it to fall over and then a bunch of Plague Marines stomp it to death.
2.) Typhus and Co. appear and infect it with plagues, killing it.
3.) Lucius randomly appears and kills it in a duel, just to show how good he is.
4.) Avatar kills Lucius and then becomes Lucius.
5.) Avatar trips and falls on the there and dies.
6.) Avatar meets Abaddon and since neither ever win both just slap each other for eternity.
I could go on, but I think you all got the idea.

Yes, there is a dark intent and drive to Khaela Mensha Khaine. However, the Dire Avengers represent his graceful aspects. I'd say he does have an honourable side, although he has a lot of malice. The Eldar are a funny bunch, so we can't ever fully relate to them!

One thing about the end: I really like the idea of an eldar resurgence. I don’t even care for eldar that much but I like the idea that may never come of every factions arms race. Orks turning back into krork. Necron digging up their old doomsday weapons, primarchs coming back (and maybe big E?), Tau ever expanding their understanding of tech and AI, tyranid getting to eat a bit of everything and learn from it. Eldar also need their big end of days move, like the revival of some of their gods.
Due to the similarities between khorne and khaine, I find it fascinating that no one ever make the comparison between an avatar of khaine and lords of skulls. Both of them parallel being an anchor for their gods in the material world avatar for fragments of khaine and lord of skulls as the armor of the blood thirsters(which are like smaller cells of khorne), the avatar bleeds lava and breath fire while the lord of skulls exhaust some kind of alchemical blood that boils victims alive and spit out skulls, their melee weapons hold humiliated souls wrestling for release the avatar’s being khaine’s and the lord’s being of the most deadliest murderers. But for all their parallels the starkest of contrast between them is how their factions view them and their creation. The avatar is the collective malice of all the eldar in the infinity circuit concentrated into an Exarch to invoke khaine. This sacrifice of the Exarch is considered one of, if not the noblest thing for craft world eldars as they call it the ritual of the young king harkening to eldanesh the greatest of eldar heroes, by giving the sacrificed Exarch the young king title. Chaos however sees the lord of skulls in a more industrialized light, the dark mechanicum has endless production lines of captured slaves and arena pits to wheat out the weak for only the strong can be its sacrifice, and the sacrifices die stripped of any dignity, humanity in the cruelest of torture. There is no respect given to the warriors sacrificed unlike the normal khornate honoring of worthy men, only defilement. The lord of skulls’s morale boost on the battle field unlike the avatar of khaine doesn’t stems from it having an agent of their god watching over them, instead it’s because it causes untold amounts of senseless destruction in its march basically being a tank with an upper body. Even the demon inhabits it uses it like a tool, no deeper meaningful bond like the avatar.

Y’know, I never thought about it, but the Eldar gods being thought-forms, or tulpas, makes a ton of sense. No other faction would be as capable of that sort of creation.

7:04 Fun fact, I actually own that Avatar of Khaine model pictured at this timestamp. It's got a short spear which I quite like. Have been planning to add the colorful regalia and some blood effects to the hand. I play Biel-Tan aspect warriors so I want the headdress to be even more colorful than normal. Lot of purple and turquoise in my army (used to call it Ill-Kaithe before I took a liking to freehand thorny vines)...
Say what you will about him, but was always one of my favorite units in DoW. Loved watching him towering over the battlefield and swathing through the fodder. Muahahahahaaa!!!

The legends of the Eldar are something that feels more akin to human mythology than actual humanity's legends in 40k.
I still think the betrayal was the orks and maybe the Aeldari took the aggression* of the orks the wrong way and it was out of control from there and the old ones couldn't stop the orks and necrons
Unpopular opinion: I prefer the name "Aeldari" over "Eldar". I like how they can be explained as "Aeldari" is High Gothic and "Eldar" is Low Gothic
The origin of 'Aeldari' is that GW couldn't trademark Eldar... and changed it to 'Eldar-y'. Eldary. Sandy Mitchell, who found this hilarious, even made fun of it in his latest Ciaphas Cain book.

It went form Isha being kidnapped by Nurgle to some demon called the Pox fulcrum doing the same thing.
I have two points, as it relates to the Avatar of khaine from your perspective that you have given us. Keeping in mind that these are just words on paper written by people putting that aside.
Could it be the Avatar of khaine consumed too much of the original Power making the avatar weaker each time that it has been summoned. Without the Avatar feeding it can not replenishing any of its power, making the Avatar weaker with each incarnation; eventually & possibly reaching a point where it cannot be summoned at all.
Second point is it possible within the lore & by your reading of the lore. If you take all the shards of Kane and put them back together would that be enough to at least for lack of a better word heal the Avatar of khaine to be one cohesive Godlike being again, even if it's not at the same amount of power as that requires as you say a prayer & sacrifice By the Eladr race in mass once again.
As a side note from a religious & magickal perspective this makes a lot of sense.
