- This should be a fun one! The rules are simple - listen to the blind comparison first and start writing you comment guessing which is which. Then watch the reveal and finish your comment with your thoughts and which you preferred.
Let me know if you find these fun and I'm happy to do more.
Thanks for watching!

So I nailed the Meinl but had the Zildjian and Piaste mixed up. So many people play Meinl these days that I could recognize it anywhere. I also think if the Zildjian was a K instead of an A I might have got it because the K's are being played a lot online. Also probably would have nailed a sabian because that's what I play. Great video as always Cole!
Thanks Drew!
I thought Meinl, Paiste, Zildjian...but I had my eyes closed and was confused because I thought you would only hit one each.
I knew the Paiste was going to be brighter, and I was right. Great quick and to the point comparison, and another great video, thanks!
great comparison! although I think maybe your room is hurtin the cymbal sound a little, cause I tested some Paiste 602 on a bigger room and the harshness u hear here went away, always tests cymbals on big rooms or they might sound a little harsh to the ear 🫣, Im also really impressed by how musical that meinl sounded even on the conditions Ive said before, very impressive!
I usually play Paiste 2002's, but I must say the Meinl crashes I have heard are sounding really good.
Paiste tends to be easier to identify in a shoot-out, because of its brightness. This is perhaps because of the differences in how Paistes are made (compared to Zil/Sab).
Paiste uses different metals, zildjian and sabian both use the same alloy.
Actually, seeing it now, that's a 602, which is b20 bronze, but it's still a little different.
@@bryanstarkweather It might be sheet metal to begin with, rather than cast.
@@bassplate no, only cheap cymbals are made with sheet bronze. All the companies use b8 for their cheaper cymbals. Paiste casts the 2002s though.
I got it right! But for a first few seconds I thought first one is zildjian
YES - I nailed it! Though I didn't comment beforehand. A's always tend to run brighter higher pitched and there's no mistaking the 602 sound. I have a 22" vintage 602 thin and it doesn't sound like any zildjian
The two biggest issues I have with cymbal makers is the massive inconsistency you get from each individual cymbal, and how poorly they perform when on a stage or even in a large open room, compared to a studio or practice room.
I have played many cymbals from the big 4 manufacturers, and Paiste hands down make the best cymbals.
The cut and clarity you get is unmatched in a live setting and I don’t even need to comment when it comes to consistency.
I had a hard time with the meinl and zildjian, but when i heard the last cymbal it sounded way different and lower budget, had in mind it probably was the paiste one just because the way they are made. maybe it was also cause i own a four set of meinl byzance, and a four set of sabian hhx
1. Meinl
2. Zildjian (unmistakable, that’s THE Zildjian A sound)
3. It just confirmed I was right 😁
Nicely done!
Got the Zildjian right, wasn't sure between Meinl and Paiste. That said, liked the sound of 1 the best. I would like to hear a blind test with Agops included, if practical.
I got it right 🙌🏻 BUT must admit that context is everything…without being able to reference the other sounds..couldn’t immediately tell unless they were all played back to back
I was able to identify Zildjian sound! 😅
I got them wrong although I preferred the Paiste and thought it was the Zildjian for its clarity but kind of thought it may be the paiste for the pretty tone. I am getting back in to Paiste from Zildjian and preference wise I agreed here.
Paiste Zildjian Meinl.
I was wrong on my two favorite sounds. But definitely didn’t like the Zildjian A therefore I recognized it easily.
Got it all right! meinl is softer darker, zildjian is very tin and clangy. Paiste has that metallic tone
i was right on all 3.. crazy
Paiste, Meinl, Zildjian.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.😂
Thank you for this video. Perhaps you could make a video on Meinyl byzance comparison
Glad you enjoyed it Frank. I'm afraid I don't have the collection for something that ambitious.
@@ColeParamore thanks for getting back. Yeah no problem. I will continue to watch your vids. Great and helpful information. Yeah those meinyl from byzance are really great sounding cymbals. I’m so use to zildjian and sabian. Been playing those most of my drumming career.
1. Meinl
2. Paiste
3. Zildjian
Wasn't quite sure about Zildjian and Paiste, I moszly play Meinl.
1. Zildjian 2. Paiste 3. Meinl
And 0/3 😂
Everyone saying they don’t like the Zildjian but this isn’t a fair comparison. The Meinl and Paiste are hand hammered and the zildjian is machine hammered. You would have to use a K to make it fair. And a Sabian HH not AA.
100% agree (even if in the meantime even the K-Zildjian is hammered by machine and produces hammermarks like handhammered)
Except your presumption isn't correct either. The Meinl is the only fully traditionally hand hammered cymbal. Paiste is hand guided under an automated hammer. None of Zildjian's cymbals are hand hammered, not even K Constantinople.
Got the Meinl right but the Zildjian got me FINESSED lol 😂
Paiste 602 is that voice in my head when I think crash. I know this might sound like blasphemy but 602 sound more like old Zildjians to me than the the A Zildjian. Or at least, they have more of that thing I like about old Zildjian. Only modern Zildjians that compete imo are the Dark Thin K.
I guessed that my second favorite is the Meinl (as I don't like Zild A Crashes) so I was right on all three 😁
A traditionals sound so good. Definitely underrated nowadays
1 Meinl 2 Zildjian 3 Paiste
ok as a guitarist, I have really been studying cymbals and can hear tonally that the zildjain here had a very similar tone to a Paiste 2002 with the B8 metal. There is a certain "zing" that comes with B8 that I hear with the zildjain. The Meinl cymbals I tend to like because they are more mellow and aren't are as harsh. I do however like the zildjain because they are more unique from the 3. (I know they aren't necessarily unique since they are considered more of a standard)
I chose Meinl-Zildjian-Paiste. As I don't like the A Custom line, it was easy to identify it based on what I don't like in the series. That underlying gongy sound which the cymbal starts with and the slightly unrefined top end. Paiste was easy, because of the crystal-like shimmering finish which is always there irrespective of the alloy. After this, I only had one other cymbal left, which had to be Meinl. Had the Zildjian been a K or a K Custom Dark, it would have been more tricky to figure out which one was the Meinl, as those cymbals are also very well refined and balanced like a Byzance.
The one in the test is an A, not an A Custom just a heads up.
@@ColeParamore Sorry, I meant A. The A Custom is not my favourite either and I guess that came into my mind when I was writing the comment.
With Zildjian you can never fail: listen to the worst cymbal and you know that it is Zildjian.
Haha I actually nailed it. I knew the paiste would be more high pitched, maybe the other 2 were a lucky guess.
Nicely done!
Meinl, Zildjian, Paiste
Got em all correct. I expected the Meinl would be the darkest or lowest pitch and I own a 16 in Zildjian A medium and it's not super bright, just right down the middle.
1. Meinl 2. zildjian 3. paiste
Is it just me or do Zildjian As sound almost choked where as the meinl sounds way more open and better
Nah you're right. Meinls do sound better. 😉
1. Meinl 2. Paiste 3. Zildjian 🤔
meinl was right, but i thought paiste was teh second. I always thought paiste have more hight tones and shrillnes to them, but I`ve never played these brands (I play agops, masterwork and zultan)
Paiste, Zildjian, Meinl...let's see...OK I got the Zildjian Custom A right, I was sure of it anyway since I 've heard a ton of them. I also knew that the Meinl would be brighter with less body than the Zildjian. I was suprised that the Meinl was the harshest of the three but I haven't heard a Byzance Traditional. My Byzance Brilliant isn't harsh at all, sounds a lot better. Anyway, I was expecting that the Paiste would be the harshest of the bunch, but I have never heard a Formula 602, only the 2002s...I was clearly wrong. The Paiste sounds the most refined and expensive of the three. And the Zildjian Custom As are the kings in a rock context.
The Zildjian is not a custom.
I liked the Zildjian was very nice and my choice.
I got the Paiste one right! But then, I've used Paiste cymbals since the 1980s. They have a higher-pitches "sizzle?" than other cymbal brands.
Zildjian K wouldn’t have been a more interesting comparison. A’s are not in the same category as Byzance imho
In reality, none of them are the “same” category, but regardless many have already found the comparison helpful and/or entertaining.
@@ColeParamore I think Meinl Byzance and Paiste 602 are for sure in the "same" category also like the K Zildjian (B20 with "hand hammered" irregular marks even if maybe the hand hammered was made also by some computer). But Avedis Zildjian from nature is 100% computer hammered as the hammermarks are little and regular and all from the same size.
1. Meinl
2. Paiste
3. Zildjian A
The Zildjian was pretty obvious to me
Let me preface by saying that I’ve never owned a pair of cymbals before 😅
1- Paiste
2- Meinl
3- zildjan
Definitely liked the sound of number 1 the most
1Meinl
2Paiste
3Zildjian
Wow, I'm feeling kinda bad because I own the exact zildjian xD
Meinl 1, zildjian 2, paiste 3.
It's actually quite easy. The cymbal that sounds the worst is most likely meinl, so 1. For the other two, the brighter one is probably paiste.
Sorry, the worst sounding cymbal here is Zildjian.
Cymbal 1 ..best sounding
1: meinl 2: zildjian 3: paiste
strangely enough i recognized the meinl immediately with no other context. just the meinl sound i guess. cymbal 2 i wasnt sure because it didnt sound like the 18 a's ive played (but i think that's due to weight) however i guessed it right anyway when i heard the paiste. ive never played paiste cymbals and it didnt have the zildjian sound
I just shot 3/3 from 3 I’m him
Meinl
Paiste
Zildjian
1. Zildyian
2. Paiste
3. Meinl
1z 2p 3m
1. Meinl 2. Paiste 3. Zildjian... Damn.... :D
1 menil 2 Zildjian 3 Paiste
meinl paiste zildjian
Cymbal 1: Meinl
Cymbal 2: Zildjian
Cymbal 3: Paiste
Hooray! I found the Meinl easy to separate from the other 2 because I knew the hammering and narrow lathing would give it a darker tone. The Zildjian and Paiste were more similar, so I had more trouble separating those 2. Eventually I figured that the Zildjian would be the more likely one to have the dark undertones which led me to putting it as cymbal 2. I personally think a fairer test might be Meinl Byzance Traditional vs. Zildjian K vs. Paiste 602 Modern Essentials, as those lines all have a very similar vibe going - dark but not super dark. You could probably throw in the HHX Legacy Crash in there too. Love blind tests though! I think they're a great way of shaking the drum marketing tree so to speak. Would definitely love to see more content like this :)
I am saying Meinl, Zildjian, Paiste.
Sweet I nailed it!
Got Meinl right!
I'm not even a drummer, and guessed correctly on all 3.
I'm a Zildjian guy and I hated the Zildjian in this test. I actually preffered the Meinl
A z B p C m
1. Meinl 2. Zildjian 3. Paiste
Yup 100% no problemo super obvious to my ear 🤷♂
