Jeff, your practical, easy-going approach is refreshing. I can tell that you love piloting. Your voice is comforting and you are easy to follow. It’s been 15 years since I last piloted. With X Plane 11, three screens, Air Manager, an NVIDIA 1080 graphics card and a big dose of motivation from watching your videos, I’m having almost as much fun at age 72 as I did then, and without leaving the house. Thanks.
David Hoffman Hi David. Next year buy an Oculus Quest virtual reality headset. And it'll make you feel like you're in the plane. 👍
They're getting released in spring 2019. If you cannot wait, try an Oculus Rift.
Wait you have a nvidia gtx 1080 graphics card? Damn now I realized how poor I am...
Being a private pilot as well Jeff, I really appreciate your enthusiasm toward aviation. I did catch two mistakes that you should never do in real life. 1.) Do not ever put in any flaps while banking the aircraft. This can cause a loss of lift if winds shear and can cause you to stall or spin. 2.) TURN OFF THOSE AVIONICS!! Before you kill your engine, turn off the buses as this can cause some major technical and electrical problems in your equipment. Does it bother the 172 much? No, but it can happen. The larger the plane, the greater the risk..... Hope to fly with you one day, give me a shout-out if you're ever in Louisiana!
Interesting point re: the avionics. I've always known it to be the case that the avionics are turned off prior to killing the engine, supposedly to prevent a transient voltage spike hurting the avionics. I was flicking through my C182T POH the other day, however, and noticed that it only calls for the avionics to be off when STARTING the engine.
I quote: BOTH BUS 1 AND BUS 2 AVIONICS SWITCHES SHOULD BE TURNED OFF TO PREVENT ANY HARMFUL TRANSIENT VOLTAGE FROM DAMAGING THE AVIONICS EQUIPMENT PRIOR TO TURNING THE MASTER SWITCH ON OR OFF,STARTING THE ENGINE OR APPLYING AN EXTERNAL POWER SOURCE
No mention of killing the avionics before killing the engine, provided the avionics go off before the master. I'd be curious to know what you think.
We do the same with cars at night always have them off before turning off the engine .
Hey I live in Lafayette will you take me flying? Idk if you fly at the Jennings airport off I-10 but I go skydiving there! lmk please (:
No flaps while banking the aircraft??
ROTFLMFAO!!!
Never heard that one before. Lots of places I fly you have no choice but to put flaps out in a bank. As always, use attitude, power, and trim to maintain a safe speed.
"We're gonna leave the beacon ON, though"
*Turns beacon off at that exact time and leaves pitot heat on*
lol yea... Maybe he'll catch it on the checklist before he burns up the heating element in the pitot tube. lol
Hey Jeff... Priming the engine is
1. Fuel mixture full rich
2. turn on fuel pump
3. push the throttle in about a quarter
4. observe rise in fuel flow
5. turn fuel pump off
The mixture should be full rich when starting. The mixture doesn't control the actual flow of fuel to the engine, it only controls the amount of air/fuel is mixed in the cylinder. The throttle controls the fuel to the engine so you would have started on dry engine there.
This cessna is very well designed, and it looks like an easy plane to learn the essential concepts of flying.
Great vídeo Jeff
Sometimes I like to slow down once and a while from the big jets and do some flying in the 172 :P
Sounds nice
I prefer the c208 tho for vfr a bit faster but c172 felt so slow that feels like vacation really back to basics its good for refreshing vfr skills
Watched this video a thousand times as a kid. Back again as part of my Bachelor of Aviation course here in Aus. Instructors included this video as part of our readings for our tutorials.
That is crazy to me!
My flow for the 172: Set Parking Brake, Fire Extinguisher Checked, Cycle Fuel Selector, Test Fuel Cutoff, Trim Set Takeoff, Verify Mixture Idle Cutoff, Verify Throttle Idle, Alternate Static Source Test, Switches & Circuit Breakers Off And Normal, Mags Grounded, Beacon On, Master On, Check Voltage (24v), Test Annunciator Panel, Test Avionics Master (listen for fan), Flaps Down, Lights & Pitot Heat On Then Inspect, Switches Except Beacon Off, Master Off. Then on to the outside preflight.
IRL? Do you use xplane? If so, does the software come with the checklist for each plane?
I fly Cessna 172’s regularly as it is my primary form of transport everyday. When starting them, 1200RPM is the correct idle rating as stated by easa.
Great video
It's identical to real flying in reference to using checklists and order of operations. Flying a real Cessna cost around 70 bucks per hour when I started in 1986. It has gotten close to $198/hr in rental charges around Gulfport. I wish I could still afford to fly but somehow I find simulators very satisfying.
Same man
I've never been really interested in flight simulators, but with VR I keep watching videos on X-Plane 11.
I enjoyed watching this great tutorial. My instinct would be to just take off ASAP, but I like how you follow protocol.
😁👍
Back when I flew 172s in a flying club, not only was the parking brake set, but also the manual toe brakes were pressed. We had heard stories of start ups where the pilot still had his" head in the cockpit" and hadn't set the parking brake. He then rolled forward into other aircraft. What a mess.
Jeff, great video as usual. If you ever do find yourself planning a XC flight in real-life and want to come out west a bit to KPUB (where I live), or KCOS just on the eastern plains of Colorado near the rocky mountains; you seriously gotta' let me know. I'd be happy to treat you guys to a nice dinner.
Jeff, as a pilot this video is not only a refresher, it's great so I decided to "Subscribe", "Clicked the Bell" and "Chose All" to get everything you post.
Hey Jeff. When you turn on the master switch the Magnetos do not spin. Only the Gyros. The Magnetos are attached to the engine and provide electricity to the ignition system. That’s why you do a
Mag check. Just an FYI.
That was great! Would love to see what controls you have and how you are looking around and pressing switches with your mouse and still flying easily. Could you do a video of that?
I know right!! I'm wondering what his setup looks like
Great video Jeff always have wanted to be a pilot
Always have been fascinated by planes
I got my love of planes from flying with my dad when he was in pilot school.
We flew in a little 172
X-Plane 11 should have been called X-Plane 20... it's leaps and bounds better than 10, especially for someone (like me) that is more comfortable with FSX. The sounds are especially good, and it's exponentially more user friendly. This is the first X-Plane I've actually looked forward to getting; all the others I bought on the hope (never realized) that I'd be happy with it.
Always remember to shut off Avionics first before pulling mixture so you don't fry the circuit especially if you have a GPS.
Don't forget your taxi lights, I forget this a lot during my flight training.
We never did during daylight in school
Cold and dark. Sounds like my sex life.
Adam Jones
Lmao good one, but hey dude get out there and find dem girls man. they are out there bruh
are you assuming his gender and sexuality
name is Adam Jones, never met a girl met Adam...
Bruh
Manuel Seguin it's nearly "madam" backwards hehe
Make sure you check oil pressure as soon as the engine starts up.
Great lesson. Thanks for the advice about the fuel pump. Actually the switch "fuel pump" must be called "Primer" because this is a primer in fact. It confused all of us because for my engineer's view the fuel pump must be on all the time.
Nice one Jeff, wish you'd been my Instructor - would've soloed much sooner. Brilliant, simple & straight forward instruction. Can't wait to fly again! Many thanks. :0)
Wow that was a really smooth landing; well done!
That’s a standard landing , I’m curious to see how your landings are now haha 😂…and yes I know it’s been 4 years
Only unrealistic thing that I saw is how you could start without advancing the throttle, all fuel injected aircraft engines require throttle advancement during prime in order to get an adequate amount of fuel into the cylinders. Other than that everything looks awesome.
Dylan Borer he did advance it about a quarter. He brought it back after it started to bring the idle to 1000 rpm.
Thx i'm not gonna lie I didn't even know where the parking brake was.
Harry McConks behind the yoke
There we go 4:26
Wow the best training video so far! Thanks so much.
Great video Jeff. I really love watching these flight school videos.
Nice flight! I also do have the feeling that the flaps on the standard 172 in X11 are modeled to be too effective. A real 172 does glide much better than this one.
I agree
Jeff, you should become a CFI.
Look in the glove box.....
Lol there’s an Austin meters bobble head in it
I love helicopters, so I'll be looking to fly one in VR. I can't wait
Sorry but when you shut it down you're supposed to turn off the avionics, then pull the mixture. If you do the mixture first you can cause damage to the avionics (not really sure how). I really did enjoy the video though Jeff. I've been watching your videos for a long time. :)
Nope. No need to shut down avionics at all. They’ll just run off the battery voltage.
No need to have avionics off at startup, either. Battery will absorb any current transients and avionics has over/under voltage protection (that’s why they are always the first things to shut down in case of electrical failure).
The old turn it off before you start/before you shut down is from the vacuum tube and generator days.
Hi Jeff,
Im about to start to play Flight simulator (xplane)
Can you please make a tutorial "how to speak with the control-tower"
Form your start on an airport to your approach on an other airport..
Ive learned a lot from your videos, navigation system and such things. Thanks for Good videos!
Filip Jinton i know you most likely know by now, but there's some tutorials on the forums and RUclips probably
If you ever need help get on discord sometime and ill be happy to teach you
I know its supposed to pull to the left due to it being a single engined plane however my seems to pull far to aggressively to the left not sure why I'm constantly adjusting it throughout the flight and when I come to land it really starts pulling to the left
A very good, objective lesson. Thank you, Jefff.
You took off without setting the altimeter, you were showing -210 feet before you took off so if you were planning on flying to 1000ft you would really be at 800. That's how pilots get killed in real live shooting an approach. Didn't see anyone else catch that but I may have missed someones elses comment.
Darrell Louque Nice point :)
Yup I caught that too. The negative altitude in Florida was a dead giveaway.
Jeff, you are the best, man!
This is like a how to steal a plane episode 5
I want to say thank you for all the tutorials that you have done. You have helped me very much to learn about airplanes and I wand to say that I love you. You are my favorite "teacher" for the simulator 😂thank you very much
Please set your altimeter as part of your checklist. You took off at -750 MSL.
This is awesome Jeff, thank you. I wrote down all these instructions in my phone. Hopefully this will carry over perfectly to Microsoft FS 2020. 3 days to go!
man, for my 4th flight lessons at KHTO. We were doing an engine run-up on the north ramp and we were checking magnetos and what not and once we checked the left mag, the whole plane started shaking. Which means the mag was dead. So RIP my fourth hour of flight xP
Thank you what a great tutorial
You forgot to shut down pitot heat and beacon ;). By the way, you should switch over to A2A airplanes. There every system of the airplane is animated, what they call acusim. That is the most realistic stuff for simulation so far. I have the C172, C182, Cherokee and the Comanche and they are great!
Check your altimeter settings its off by more than 100ft.
Eddie Nual the airport is elevated
Wow that was awesome you are the only You tuber that actually did a Cessna tutorial
Hey Jeff I really know how to start the Cessna 172 and it was pretty easy
Ehh you sure that's the mags you hear after turning the master on Jeff? Haha just giving you a hard time. Great video man.
I've been looking for this video forever
I think you shouldve shown us the pre-flight. I know how to myself since you did a video of doing it a while back. You should also show how to start up an airliner
When you turned on the fuel pumps and pushed in the fuel mixture you didn't get any reaction from your fuel flow because you didn't push in the throttle at all. But other then that great job man!
Magneto check is up to 150 drop on each and the difference between the two should be no more than 50
Can you (or someone) explain why pilots lean the mixture during taxi? I know on the Airfoillabs Cessna 172 they say it can "foul" the spark plugs, and you mention it around 6:20... I'm still learning, so what exactly does "fouling" mean, and how much would I lean the mixture? Thanks.
it is when the insulator nose on the spark plug is fouled with oil or gas. This makes the spark plug fail to fire and causing what people call "missing" in the engine. If the mixture is too rich you are increasing the chance of those substances getting on the insulator nose so you lean the mixture to reduce the chance. Hope that makes sense.
Jeff Favignano Ah, okay. And this happens how soon after the engine is started? Is it just when you start taxiing or when the engine reaches a stable idle? Thanks.
pretty much after it warms up but I would assume it could foul anytime the engine is running
Jeff Favignano Thanks!
Hey hey Ft Myers. I heard only the coolest people live near that airport.
Don't know crap about airplanes but this was awesome.
Should we turn off the fuel pumps in the b737 also after engines started up??
What did you say
Never turn them off. Fuel pumps give you high pressure.
Wait for the lower cluster of screens to say 25. Then put the fuel mixture on. NEVER TURN OFF THE PUMPS
If you turn them off the engine goes out
Good stuff Jeff! Took ur advice and started making more vlog style flying videos
Around 6:00 you mentioned "we'll release our brakes", for some reason Laminar Research did not include a parking brake lever on the Cessna 172, which should normally be where your mouse pointer was (next to the of the elevator trim) when you released the it. I always have to use the "b" key for that purpose on that particular aircraft.
The parking brake lever is under the pilots yoke
@@chaseydog7956 Thanks, yeah, I noticed that when I clicked the option to hide the yoke. :)
Hi Jeff, I have purchased the following hardware for XP11:
- Logitech Extreme 3D Pro JOYSTICK
- Bravo Throttle Quadrant
- Alpha Yoke Flight Controls
- Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.
I also have a laptop dedicated to XP11 alone: Microsoft Surface i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz, RAM 32 GB, Intel Iris Xe Graphics, running Win10 64-bit.
I have no idea how to set the above hardware in XP11, I downloaded and installed the proper drivers for all of them, but now I am completely stuck!
I have never flown before, most of terminology is Greek to me (apologies to the wonderful Greek people) but I am willing to learn!
I want to be able to set everything to a basic level for Cessna 172 until I learn the ropes, willing to read and learn, but I cannot find any decent tutorial.
No matter how much I did try to set-up these things in X-Plane11, I still cannot use them, paid thousands of money for all this and I am still forced to use the keyboard for everything! And I cannot even start the damn plane to learn to fly, the XP11 tutorials that come with the game are really disappointing.
Do you have any video clips that take a guy from zero and help set up the hardware to work with the simplest of planes, the Cessna 172 above?
Many thanks, Colin.
Thank you Jeff for this video! It really got my "juices" going again to get started on my pilot training! I have a question. At 11:27 you said, "One thing you wanna do is not fixate on your instruments [during take-off]"... Conceptually that makes a lot of sense to me and is also consistent with the old adage, "aviate, navigate, communicate". The part I'm missing is... without looking at the heading on the DG... I was not able to get enough of a frame of reference through the window views to know if I was drifting from the runway heading! How do you know whether you're drifting off course or not (specifically during take-off when you have such a "nose high" attitude)? Is the answer as simple as "experience" plus the added benefit of having views out the side windows in a real airplane? Also, changing to a slightly different scenario, I'm assuming that if it's an IFR flight and you cannot see the ground after takeoff; it totally changes things and we MUST "fixate" on the instruments, right? Thanks in advance for your time and help!
When you take off you take a ground reference as a continuation of the runway to know if you're drifting or not, and when you stop seeing it, you turn over to see the runway. If you had a crosswind during take off it will intensify during the climb.
And yes, for IFR you fixate on the instruments
I am a real flight instructor and you did a great job!
That fuel pump thing doesn't really work properly in Xplane. In real life I was told to put it into rich once the engine fully starts not slowly push it in like the video showed as you were starting it up. If I tried that in Xplane the prop would start for a quick second then die.
i love flight simulators i am waiting for x-plane11
jacek reczkowski he means the 11.00 instead of the beta
Always check for positive amps and normal oil pressure after starting engine.
As someone who is learning to fly (or rather navigate) in the C152 and 172 for my PPL it is nice to see the differences between different Cessna aircraft varying in real life and in different sims.
I do wish to know if the Cessna as shown in X-Plane is fuel Injected or if it has a carburetor. I just noticed that the start up for this Cessna is slightly different to the ones I was provided with to start up a carbed cessna.
So far I'm really enjoy the demo of X plane 11, really considering getting it when it launches on Steam.
He's not gonna make,,,,, he's gonna make it... he.... awwww
Hey Jeff I'm 14 and trying to get onto flying. How did you learn to fly? Do you have to know someone? Thanks
Go to your local airport. Most will have schools where you can learn. It's not cheap, however. If you really love aviation, though, I've have heard of some people getting flight lessons for cleaning airplanes or doing other work for somebody certified as an instructor. Google "flight schools in my area" for more info and make sure they have good reviews, to start with.
coolx10249 you can do a discovery flight first to see if you're really sure about it because it can be quite expensive
Go to a flight school
You don't have to know someone to get into flying. But knowing people can sometimes help. Like at my local airport local pilots (mainly local with couple local celebrities pilots) they are actually very nice and sometimes lets younger people in their planes and can learn some from them.
But flying school is a decent option but can be expensive depending on the license you want to get. Some to most flight schools offer a promotion flight (or something like that) that probably differs in price in each state/county (my local airport was $150-200) and gives you credits toward your license.
I am 15 and I am currently saving up 10 grand for my private pilots license and you can find flight school at most airports.
Awesome to see another xplane vid Jeff! Would be neat to see you do some challenges, were you ever thinking of doing that?
Hi Jeff. The explanation was very good. Can you tell me what have you assigned for your throttle quadrants.I'm using throttle1, backup throttle and mixture 1.
You shouldn't really turn on the ALT on the battery side before the engine started,
Why not? That’s never been something I’ve seen.
In fact... on the older 172s, they didn’t even have split master switches-even with alternators.
5:12 airbus: am I a joke to you?
Man your landing was the best!
Thanks for the great video
Never land on a Tailwind? What if you land in a One Way Take of and Landing on a Tailwind. 😀
+Blue Marshall special rules apply for those airports
Awesome he came to page field
love these endless series lol
Thanks for this demo...I will be purchasing this software soon.
I just got done watching a bunch of episodes of bugs and I got bored so I decided to look up some other videos and I saw your name that's awesome might as well subscribe while I'm here
+Kyle 1971 welcome to the channel Kyle!
super informative video, really helped me out. Thanks!
I'm confused about why you couldn't just leave the fuel mixture knob pushed in. What's the point of bringing it back out only to push it back on?
Good job Jeff, enjoyed your video!
great video, I'm learning alot from your videos, thanks for all the details
jeff why did you show no love for those nav lights during the flight :D cant wait till they get it polished up cause man this thing is gonna be amazing when its finished
we never used them unless at twilight or night time operations. You can't see them during the day anyway.
you do have a point there why wear out parts when they are not needed at that time
The Cessna has the same interior in FSX steam edition
Not sure if you're aware or its something you can control but youtube wanted me to watch a 10 minute advert from tai lopez midway through the video. just throwing it out there. GR8 vid anyway
Sucks for you....that guy is such a muppet....kinda wish diarrhea on him.
Hey Jeff I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
When I play a demo from Xplane11 and I choose this Cessna, the plane when riding automatically starts pulling to the left. I cannot override it. Actually I always have this problem when trying out a flight sim with any single prop. Why do I have this, I see it nowhere else in a clip? It's a natural occurring phenomenum, it has to do with the momentum created by the propeller turning right.
Are there any basic, basic beginning videos out there. I can't even get just basic views correct. When my x plane starts up it is in 2D. Can switch to 3D cockpit but it just moves around and won't let me freeze the view. Any help? I'm frustrated. I fly a Trike but want to learn more about the fixed wing Cessna.
Your fuel flow did not rise because you did not push in the throttle a 1/4 before priming.
What controller are you using Jeff?
you turned off all the lights and said leave the beacon light on at 2:15 ... but you turned it off as you said that... confused.
Amazing video, subscribed!
lol it's funny how i can actually fly a cessna in real life... but i can't manage to fly the virtual one since i don't know how to control both the plane and the mouse in order to control the buttons inside the cockpit... have no joystick what so ever
Thanks a lot, Jeff !! Great video.
i like to land the 172 at 70 nots dont like the basket ball bonce when landing
Hey Jeff, where's the bobble head doll?
I have had X-plane 11 and never realy learned how to use it. Steam has kept it up-to-date and I want to run it. I've already crashed twice, LOL.
Jeff can you please may a video on how to file a flight plan in xplane 11.
