The OEM trailer has two posts that go into that rear frame bulkhead- with additional bolts underneath to unite it to the body. That seems to be a stronger connection than just the 8 bolts here. I was hoping for an OEM type solution that I could get for less, but I think I will stick with the Subaru part for this one.

The Subaru owner's manual specifically states NOT to use a weight distribution system since the car is a unibody frame and not a ladder frame. Additionally, the manual specifically states that the maximum tongue weight is 500lbs.
You will want to follow the vehicle's capacities and restrictions. This is for the safety of the vehicle and the passengers inside. Why is the maximum tongue weight so much higher? If memory serves me right, the base model is a maximum of 200 pounds, and 500 pounds for the other trim levels with factory installed hitches.
You will want to take the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle and the hitch into account. Go with the lower capacity between the hitch and the vehicle. www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/Curt/C25VR.html

I'd say the Curt hitch used here is far superior than what Subaru uses. Factory install of the OEM will more than meet my needs, but I feel like Subaru could have done a lot better.
The 2021 Subaru Ascent has an optional add on hitch or you can pick up and aftermarket hitch as shown in this video. Warranty issues with Subaru may arise if you exceed or ignore the manual's specifications. Please ellaborate.
Is this an upgrade or does the ascent not have a hitch at all oem? I just got my wife one but haven’t taken it apart yet
