Look very good. I’ll making the same just with a smaller hole. Thanks for the video. It looks simple but I was looking for ideas. This is perfect. Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Your patience is noteworthy! Since Subaru doesn't make an OEM hitch cover (with an opening), is their expectation that the owner just removes the back bumper and replaces it after each trailer use? I just purchased a 2022 Ascent, so I'm still learning about all the possible mods. Thanks!
I’m glad you like the video. I asked the parts guy at Subaru about a hitch cover and he couldn’t believe Subaru doesn’t make one because so many customers ask for it. We use our bike rack every weekends and removing the cover every time got old. I couldn’t find any mods online so I decided to make this to share with Subaru owners.
I have a 2019 Ascent, the two clasps on the bottom of the cover are less than a second a piece to take off. We tow a trailer with it. I like the full cover so when we are not towing or using a rack we don't have to stare at a hitch. To each their own though.
I am about to cut mine. Why did you go 14" wide with the opening? I'm thinking 7" is enough, possibly 8" wide. I also am using it to haul bikes. By the way, a spare cover is about $30 in case someone wants a spare
Hi. I had someone reached out to me to make him one (New Jersey). I ended up making one for him however the shipping cost was more then the parts. UPS told me the dimensions of the box was the cause of how expensive shipping was. Bag or box the shipping is still more then the parts price. With this in mind, I can’t make one for you or anyone because it cost too much for shipping.
It appears there's a cut out embossed line to cut out just the square receiver, if so then a hitch extender would bring out the receiver do it wouldn't be necessary to have the larger rectangular cut out.
I remove the D hitch every weekend so that I can attach my Thule bike hitch. The cutout is wide so that I can fit my big hands inside to put the hitch security pin. Without the security pin in place, I’m trusting a stranger not to steal my $1200 bike hitch or $200 Cargo Basket hitch. The width is for practicality and not looks.
The panel itself has two plastic pins that you pop off with a special tool or a flathead screwdriver. If you have the models above Limited then the plastic tabs would be spring loaded so no tools required. You’re not going to break the cover if you try. The plastic pins you may break but you can always replace them with the spring loaded pins. Silly? Not a chance. I’m always attaching my bike rack and cargo carrier to this. The D hook is so that people who don’t know how to park will learn quickly once they hit it.
The fact that Subaru doesn’t make this is infuriating, but this looks so pro! I’m going to attempt this - hopefully turns out as good.
Great video/idea. Well done, and thanks for posting it for the rest of us to benefit from!
Very nice tip marking with the center point with a sharpie. Thanks for sharing.

It’s super easy. Just take your time and be patience. Thanks for watching
Did you have success w/ a smaller hole?
That was great and inspirational Thanks
Looks nice
bonus: it will double as a speed hole, reducing drag allowing you to go faster...
Great job!!
Thanks for creating this. 👍
Hey maybe for your next project those reflectors on your bumper wanna have it work like an extra turn signal or brake light 😉

What a good idea. Any chance you would make one for sale? I’d be sure to mess it up if I tried.

@@cbuisr That is awfully odd. What was the shipping cost? I'd be willing to pay if it is somewhat reasonable. You did such a nice job. I am in NY
Same...I'd pay whatever shipping

Silly ? but how do you remove the panel initially? I'm afraid of breaking something and don't see how to remove the cover.

Now can you make one for me! 😊
Cool!
